this steel is REALLY tough ! maybe a carbide bit would work better ? but seriously, you must have gotten a shock from that ! i drill mine before profiling, a little safer when its rectangular.DSC_0242 by john april, on Flickr
So is it work friction welding :) I will never forget ............my father / 80 ege / and one neighbor start to drill a hole in steel with left turn drill bit , of course drill turn on right .............they resharpen many times THAT dull dril bit and at the end they gave up ............ they said the steel was too hard :D

Use your vise! I was drilling pin holes like that and it did not hit the post, I have a large DP. It helicoptered and flew off about 50mph and could have killed me.

I regularly suggest that all gas hoses, hydraulic lines, and power cords be secured behind the machine and if possible be inside metal shields/covers. One hot blade bumping or being dropped on a power cord will melt right through it. Bumped/dropped into a propane hose ... instant flame thrower. Bumped/dropped into a hydraulic line is a shop fire you don't want to think about. It could easily spray you with hot and laming hydraulic oil.

I have seen many grinders with the power cord plugged in right behind the grinder belt. Besides spewing metal dust at a power socket, It can send hot sparks at a power cord.

Look around your shop and think about those extension cords, gas hoses, and equipment power cords. I bet every one of us could move or protec more than a few.

I used to work at a spiral staircase factory. We would drill the center posts with this massive powermatic drill press. We had a big 8' diameter job and had to drill 1.75" hole through the posts. I noticed the new guy on the drill press was wearing kevlar gloves. I told him to not wear gloves while working the drill press, especially kevlar, because the bit can catch the glove. He looked at me like i was an idiot, then while locking eyes with me, he touched the spinning bit with his hand. It twisted his finger off and thankfully the bit pulled out of the friction fit chuck before it did anymore damage to his hand.

If that bit didnt pull out, his whole hand trapped in that stupid glove would have been twisted off. I dont want to even imagine where on his body that press would have stopped twisting had that bit stayed in the chuck.
