Things you like in theory, but not in practice

This. I forget it is there and end up with a knife in my hand I did not intend to open that quickly.

Hawkbills and massive recurves!

I love love love nasty looking killer knives but usually never end up using them.

think along the lines of Spyderco matriarch or Emerson Sark.

Straight nasty looking but I don't find myself needing a blade shape like those, but I can't get enough of them.

I gotta weird one! Natural handles. I love wood, bone, and stag. I love the idea of aging with the knife, I love seeing old pocket worn bone and old yellow stag!

Buuuut in use I find I much prefer plastic or similar handles. Micarta is okay but I love Moras rubberized plastic. Much easier to use and I don't have to worry about breaks or cracks. That said, it causes much anxiety choosing a "soulless" plastic over a natural material!

Same here. I love the look.

I bought an all black Matriarch with the Emerson Wave a while back and it is completely bad@$$. One of the scariest knives ever made IMO.

Of course, unless someone happens to jump me in my home office AND I can get the Matriarch out of my desk drawer fast enough... it likely will never be used.

Not the best knife for cutting tomatoes and buttering toast by any stretch. :D

Not sure what this has to do with this thread or why you qouted me.

Similar here. I love the idea of a fighting knife, but honestly when do I get to use it.

the blade shape always seemed awkward as the tip had too much curvature to it
That's the way I have felt about my 110 but I'm coming around.

Really though
Things I like in theory, but not in practice
The first thing that came to mind is S110V. I can get along with it but it isn't me. I practically never want toothy and M4 cuts circles around it for sharpness and edge durability in a polished edge. I have a couple of S110Vs that I like and will never sell . . . I'm just saying . . .

The next thing that came to mind is fixed blades. Wellllll fixed blade sheaths . . . wellllll Cold Steel Secure Ex sheaths. I enjoyed carrying several fixed blades but the sheath dulls my nice edges quickly and the sheath collects nasty stuff. I went back to folders because the edges stay way sharper way longer and even if the blade is gooped up (think : I just cut up a bunch of trash at the dumpers and don't want to wipe it on my clothing) it doesn't come off on the handle and once I clean the blade the clean blade doesn't touch the semi dirty handle. In practice I like that much better for EDC than a dull fixed in a nasty sheath.

What else . . . errrr hand sharpening . . . sounds good . . . in practice the edges off my Edge Pro are just soooooo much higher quality; geometry wise, whittling wise, edge durability wise.
In practice a "machined" precision edge is just superior.

Mr. Bagger,

About dirty stuff, you’re going to like balisongs. By design no touching the blade both in use & storage/carry, and cleaning is also easy.

I'm gonna have to say balisongs.

I have a balisong fork, and a balisong wih spoon "blade".
I am not good at doing the tricks of flipping.
I have many times had the balisong fork go flying out of my hand and jab me in the chest or gut.
Just last night, I picked it up, and within a couple of minutes it flew out of my hand, and jabbed me in the chest.
If it had been a blade, I would have had an inch to an inch and a half deep hole on a straight line towards my heart.

So I guess I'm not too mad that the Canadian government banned balisong knives, because I would own some, and I would have stabbed myself with them...most likely multiple times. :D

Knew a guy that pinned his scrotum to an ottoman when he missed an aerial.

I can believe it. :)
Balisongs and nunchaku, the two most tempting to play with weapons that result in hilarious injuries. :D

Oh, man, you conjure the other (more hilarious and less bloody) story of martial arts injury I know. As a teenager a friend got a padded three-section-staff for Christmas. We both thought it was about the most badass thing ever, so he started showing off with it and lost control a bit. One section swung up, one down while he held the middle and he managed to simultaneously smack himself in the back of the head and the balls. Being teens we dubbed it 'The Double-header' and laughed for about twenty minutes.

Handles that are too ergonomincally sculpted.
Theyre really curvy with multiple finger grooves and choils which sounds good on paper, but dont fit all hands and only promote one grip. That's a big no go, especially for a utilitarian cutting tool.

The most neutrally shaped handles are the best in my opinion , but there are a few exceptions of course. Some knives that don't need multiple gripping options, but those are few and far between.

ZACLY
(Manix cough, cough)
I traded my Manix and full flat ground my Ti Lite (two Ti Lites actually)
Try rolling a Manix in a carving motion some time like this. Nope. and that's only one example.

Recurves...(sharpening)...tho I do like the Minicomm.
Torx/hex/proprietary head screws on an edc/work knife...not always easy to find...
Cool looking dark, or worse, camo coatings...who wants a knife that disappears when you drop in brush? Pretty much every blade I have that goes out into the world has a bright orange lanyard on it (see avatar).
