Things you like in theory, but not in practice

Flippers and bearings. Great for a play knife. Crap for a working knife, and all mine get put to work.

Strong statement. What kind of work would disqualify a flipper and/or bearings? If it’s truly hard duty isn’t a fixed blade more appropriate?

great thread to go fishing in if your looking for something specific. a lot of unhappy buyers with knives collecting dust here :)

might be worth a shot though

many don't have the time or desire to go through the effort to sell the stuff they regret buying.

Sorry I just always try to see the silver lining :)

I love some woods. But in practice some are awful.
Wenge is a nightmare, super splintery. And dust is pretty bad for you. Looks awesome though.
Leopard wood, my favorite wood, but its not super super stable, had come shrink on me a bit. But the oils make it very water resistant .

I recently started loving micarta. Its super grippy at 220 grit and you sort of feel the fibers. I found the trick to working with it. Use super agressive belts to hog out material. Typically 40 grit followed by 120 then a scalloped 1x72 220 grit. Then hand sand with 220. Works great.
I used to hate micarta Because it clogs belts.
Im all for natural materials but sometimes synthetic is best. (Dont ever ask for bone or antler from me)

I’m not very much a flipper but the basic opening/closings. The benefit as mentioned by @Wowbagger and the strongest lock in folder is the big plus in my view.

Strongest "lock" only if the pivots are strong. A buddy of mine had a balisong, and one of the pivots busted off quite quickly. Brass handled balisong of low quality, the sort most people had at that point in time.

I already carry at least 2 knives. If you would take the time and look around a bit you can see hundreds of pictures I have posted of the knives I carry. I usually carry a fixed blade as back-up SD option to my pistol. For me, a folder is generally pure EDC utility. I don't need it to be fast opening for SD, that is what my fixed blade and gun are for. So that being the case, I found a waved knife annoying and a bit dangerous to have opening when I didn't want it to. The solution to that problem for me certainly was not to keep carrying the waved knife.

It was not only a nonsensical post with all the number gibberish, it was misinformed as I already carry two knives, one of which opens faster than a waved knife and only if I want it to.

Today I'm carrying the Spartan Phrike. Perfect for a hot day as it is light and slim. You might recognize that edge, TLE.

I admit it was a leap thinking that anyone would be able to follow collegiate level statistics on BladeForums and that some of you would be thrown with your GEDs and High School level mathematics.

The following POLL was on BladeForums: How many knives do you carry daily? (Responses on BladeForums ranged from 2012 through to 2015).

My NOTES:
- Did not count SAK (of which there were many) or flashlights (of which there were a few) as carried edged tools.
- Could not understand the carry options for approx 5 posts

THE TALLIED RESPONSES FROM 159 POSTS ON THAT BLADEFORUMS ARTICLE: 2 to 3, 1 to 2, 2, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 1 to 2, 2, 3, 2, 2, 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 5, 4, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 1 to 4, 2, 2, 1, 2, 2, 1 to 3, 4, 3, 1, 2, 3, 4, 2, 3, 4, 1, 3, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 1, 2, 2 to 3, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 1, 2, 3, 3, 2, 2, 2, 4, 2, 1 to 3, 1, 5, 3, 3, 1, 3, 2, 2, 1, 2, 3, 1, 1, 3, 1, 2, 1, 4, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 2, 2 to 3, 3, 2, 6, 4, 3, 3, 1, 3, 1, 3, 2, 3, 3 to 4, 2, 3 to 4, 2, 2, 1, 2, 1.

Again with the gibberish. I'm not sure you know what statistics are, much less the methods that go into making them relevant.

Your whole premise in responding to me was off. Bad science kid.

Insulting the entire forum is a bad look. You've got a lot to work on (it).

Love the look of some big folders like a case bulldog, but find them awkward to carry and a little silly to use for most everyday tasks.

The average BladeForum member carries two or more knives. Right pocket WAVE, left pocket flipper.

Nope. Not even close. Did you poll all BFC members? If not then you can't say that you have. Further, you can't say the average BFC member carries "two or more knives. Right pocket WAVE, left pocket flipper." That is factually not the case. Who decides not to count a SAK? You? Why? It isn't even a freaking poll. Why call it such?

This is bad data at best. You representing it otherwise is insulting. Then throw in your actual insults. Top tip, when insulting the entire membership of bladeforums please at least try to a be a bit accurate with your insults. Calling people dumb for not understanding statistics and then drastically missing the mark yourself on said statistics makes you look dumb.

Folding karambits. In particular the Emersons, for which the wave openers simply do not work. Folding karambits in general deploy awkwardly and slowly, compared to standard folders. Given that the karambit is basically useful only as a tactical self-defense knife, the awkwardness would likely be a problem. And then there's a fixed blade karambit, which has its own limitations as carry knife. Don't get me wrong, however, the karambit is a fascinating and menacing knife that has always drawn my attention...I own two.

Family vacations. In particular the ones with meathead brothers-in-law who think drinking protein shakes alone without working out do anything other than make everyone else miserable with his constant crop-dusting...

With knives - recurved blades. Beautiful to look at, but not as utilitarian for me when it comes to re-sharpening.

I'm gonna have to say balisongs.

I have a balisong fork, and a balisong wih spoon "blade".
I am not good at doing the tricks of flipping.
I have many times had the balisong fork go flying out of my hand and jab me in the chest or gut.
Just last night, I picked it up, and within a couple of minutes it flew out of my hand, and jabbed me in the chest.
If it had been a blade, I would have had an inch to an inch and a half deep hole on a straight line towards my heart.

So I guess I'm not too mad that the Canadian government banned balisong knives, because I would own some, and I would have stabbed myself with them...most likely multiple times. :D

This balisong fork?

It took me abit of practice to get good at flipping a bali in a continual smooth motion. Once you figure out how to flip then it is alot easier and more intuitive that I thought it would be.

I’m still not trying any aerials or crazy tricks though.

No need to get snarky, there are a lot of really smart PhD level folks on this forum that have decades of experience in various scientific fields. Also there are a lot of scary folks that I would not want to make angry. (I am in neither of those groups btw)

Quick question, why would you disregard a sak as a second knife?

Not tacticool enough

Back locks and every Spyderco I’ve ever had. I’ve owned 8 and I have sold all but two of them. That being said, I do have a smock on preorder.

I was the opposite with Spyderco, I thought they were ugly as sin until I handled one in person, now I can't get enough of them.
I like their blade shapes and thin grinds, but I am not a fan of the ricassos or the plunge lines on them. Can’t say I didn’t try!

Extremely wear resistant steels - I still really want Rex 121 at 69 HRC, but sharpening it would be ZERO fun

Handsome folders, to a certain degree - I find them difficult to use and I always end up pulling a more user knife to do the work... which undoes the purpose of owning the aforementioned handsome knife. I actually really dislike this problem, because shopping for knives gets really weird. Do I buy the one I like and not use it, or do I buy the ugly one I want to beat on? It's so twisted.
