THings you'd like to see

Best little book for your pack....'A Comprehensive Guide to Wilderness & Travel Medicine', by Eric Weiss MD  Condensed and no BS included all info and nothing but!

Something on basic first aid, cuts and dealing with ailments, sprains etc.

Why not contact Mr Ron Hood about doing just such a video to add to his series? I'm sure he'd find the idea pretty good, as well you could point him to this thread and he might include some other subjects:thumbup:

This may sound dumb ,but I would like to see a Chapter on Knives, how to use them in different angles of "how to hold them" for this task with less fatigue to fingers ,wrist etc. I mean common sense tells you how to hold a knife, but no one every explains the different grips to use for certain bushcraft skills, small game etc.
I know how to use my knife effectively but am I using it correctly , I'd just like to see more depth of useage of Sharp tools, knives, axes, etc. just because I would not like to pass on bad habits to my son or friends. I guess that came out right ?

in a survival book??? I have allot of these Probably around 25 or so and have read them all..allot of it is the same basic information which is recycled over and over.. Usually if I can glean 1or 2 bits of info form a book it;s a success. This makes sense because most surivival books are overviews for people who know little or nothing of bushcraft or survival.. so my question is, If you where to have input as to what went in to one of these books, What would it be? As a side note.. I personally find Ray mears books to be some of the best out there in terms of clear info, and reabilitiy.

I would love to see how people drill holes in stuff without a drill bit.

Hey Boomer,

John McPherson does a video on brain tanning and it's pretty easy to follow. There is also a chapter in his first book.

It's all my buddy Phil and I used to do our first skins and they turned out well.

Good point if you want a resource with you. The real "computer age" awaits a computer you can drop on the rocks with no fear of destruction.

But some pople want a "book" to consult at home and all the info you want is out there, including with gerat pics and videos.

(Oh. You can't use the computer for TP either. Great tinder potential, but lousy as TP.)

Big friendly letters on the front that say "Don't Panic!"

I'd like some statistical info in a book, like shelter x in country y should take about z hours for a person to set up for the first time with just the following instructions.....
or shelter x requires y people to set up within an hour, and all will fit inside.
Pics are better than drawings IMHO as an artist can make any shape of stick, and I've found that when you ask people for a branch, they find the oldest, nastiest, nearly rotten hunk of wood ten feet from camp.

Finally, I'd really like a book that didn't have a lawyer involved, merely with sensible danger warnings, so that I can judge the risk for myself, and with good scientific info for the techniques described.
Water method x in area y has been tested to produce z liters of water per day average, greatest variable factor being c, other factors.....

For time of construction, you would need to know exactly where in the country you are building (controls presence of materials), who is doing the building, what shape they are in, and how skilled they are. No formula can replace local knowedge and experience. Knowledge without experience is just information.

How's this: Unless you are very experienced, it will take much longer than you think. Start at once.

Water method x in area y has been tested to produce z liters of water per day average, greatest variable factor being c, other factors.....
Boiling produces almost the amount boiled, and the variables are size of pot, presence of tight-fitting lid, temperature of water, temperature of air, effective wind speed, time it takes to light stove/get a fire going, and heat produced by stove/fire. Other methods depend on other variables. Chlorine and iodine, for example, depend on temperature, dose, time of exposure to dose, ph of water, dissolved minerals, dissolved organics, and turbidity.

As for "area y," a couple of miles - or 50 feet, can make all the difference. You couldn't carry the book home, much less on a backpacker.

There are no simple answers for some issues, just a need for a good understanding of the problems and solutions, experience, and good judgment. If you could buy understanding, judgment, and experience, you'd be in a fictional existence.

Practice makes better.
