I take your point here to some extent. However, a case could be made as to why you wouldn't want to limit them to that. And on that, I may or may not agree with you. The point there though is I'm sure to some extent a reasonable case could be made either way. And it is that right there that let's it off the hook for a blanket case of fucktardery like one could level at the Bat'leth.
In a word empowerment. When I have time I get out with a few blind folks and their dogs. I empower then as much as I can. I have a friend that works for a charity specializing in getting disabled city kids out into the sticks. She is like-minded on the empowerment thing.
I guess I make distinctions between things that are a] categorically boswellox and no excuses, b] things that have a peculiar and rare niche perhaps, like this or the hook tool on a SAK, c] and things that are just a matter of taste; Like I find squaring off the spine of a knife to be a ludicrous thing people do just to perform knife stunts. Carrying a striker is hardly an imposition if you've got a brain that works. Yet legions of youtube followers have taken files to their knives 'cos it is trendy at the moment. People that use knives for a living don't do that for pretty obvious reasons. Ultimately with this one though you are forced into well they're your hands, and if you can ignore the discomfort you've wilfully introduced just so you can do stunts in front of impressionable n00bs, you crack on. On that, I don't find this device here to be a case of [a] and dumbest piece of gear ever.., more of a , or [c].
I can conceive of some genuine use to someone.
Perhaps it could be a tool to teach kids the principles despite them lacking the mechanical power to follow through on their own without an assist.
Mebe it's of some use to the disabled. Here I'm thinking of someone with arthritic paws.
It's hard to tell with special needs if you haven't got them. Look at the below. I'd file that under crap too. But I'm sure someone was thrilled that they purchased it within 72hrs and got $310 off, and their life is somehow better as a consequence.

As far as that knife, it will never see a bit of dirt is my guess.
I worked at REI for over 5 years and spent a lot of time saying; "you don't really need that.."
A fool and his money were lucky to have even ever met in the first place.A fool and his money are soon parted...
don't loose your money.
funny. I have to share this one.
How is it different than the hundreds of bottle opener finger-knucks, prybars, baby-blades and every other EDC toy that costs too much and will never get used so the anno doesn't get scratched? To me its a biolite branded bottle opener, so why not?
I get that its fun to trash a silly idea, and yes, it kinda is. But I've seen far sillier sold for far more. If you want to be a "My way is better" hipster, then go right ahead, I won't stop you. If the thought that someone out there thinks you are a hipster is hard on your ego, then maybe reconsider how you view the world.
Baldtaco, I agree with empowerment. I do my best to teach to do, rather than to do myself. Not everyone understands how powerful a simple task can be when it comes to making someone feel more independent.
Billym, not calling anyone a hipster, just that when someone says that their way is the best way, its how it starts to sound. Do what you like man, its your life to live. As far as silly stuff like pick guns and cold chisels, lets not let that guys nuttiness get all over the forum, its bad enough already.
Good. People are gross and always have been. Just because the rule is new doesn't mean the behavior is.I've noticed the list of pool rules grows ever year. It used to just be "No Running", now it's 19 items and counting.

I have worked in the Beer Business for over 15 years and NEVER carried a bottle opener. Gave a ton away but never needed a special tool just a lever improvised by a Bic lighter or the spine of my EDC.
