Think I just found the dumbest piece of gear ever..

I take your point here to some extent. However, a case could be made as to why you wouldn't want to limit them to that. And on that, I may or may not agree with you. The point there though is I'm sure to some extent a reasonable case could be made either way. And it is that right there that let's it off the hook for a blanket case of fucktardery like one could level at the Bat'leth.

In a word “empowerment”. When I have time I get out with a few blind folks and their dogs. I empower then as much as I can. I have a friend that works for a charity specializing in getting disabled city kids out into the sticks. She is like-minded on the empowerment thing.

I guess I make distinctions between things that are a] categorically boswellox and no excuses, b] things that have a peculiar and rare niche perhaps, like this or the hook tool on a SAK, c] and things that are just a matter of taste; Like I find squaring off the spine of a knife to be a ludicrous thing people do just to perform knife stunts. Carrying a striker is hardly an imposition if you've got a brain that works. Yet legions of youtube followers have taken files to their knives 'cos it is trendy at the moment. People that use knives for a living don't do that for pretty obvious reasons. Ultimately with this one though you are forced into “well they're your hands, and if you can ignore the discomfort you've wilfully introduced just so you can do stunts in front of impressionable n00bs, you crack on”. On that, I don't find this device here to be a case of [a] and “dumbest piece of gear ever..”, more of a , or [c].

Whatever

It's no more lame than a lot of other junk people carry, like the multitude of micro multipurpose edc tools, or expensive titanium "pry bars" which are 3" long.

I can conceive of some genuine use to someone.

Perhaps it could be a tool to teach kids the principles despite them lacking the mechanical power to follow through on their own without an assist.

Mebe it's of some use to the disabled. Here I'm thinking of someone with arthritic paws.

It's hard to tell with special needs if you haven't got them. Look at the below. I'd file that under crap too. But I'm sure someone was thrilled that they purchased it within 72hrs and got $310 off, and their life is somehow better as a consequence.

I ordered one of the cheaper coated versions. It's gonna be one heck of a chopper.

As far as that knife, it will never see a bit of dirt is my guess.
I worked at REI for over 5 years and spent a lot of time saying; "you don't really need that.."

When those knives eventually ship, you will see some one using one and getting it dirty and scratched.

I had one of their FBMLE. About the same length blade, same satin finish. That sucker was a chopping beast. With the extra blade height, this version will be a nastier chopping machine.

Expensive, and heavy. Not a back packer knife. Not for thin twigs. But I have my thumbs for that.

Their knives are fun to use and fun to play with. And, best of all, you sell them all dirty and scratched, and don't loose your money.

This looks like a college seniors physiology project or something.

How is it different than the hundreds of bottle opener finger-knucks, prybars, baby-blades and every other EDC toy that costs too much and will never get used so the anno doesn't get scratched? To me its a biolite branded bottle opener, so why not?

I get that its fun to trash a silly idea, and yes, it kinda is. But I've seen far sillier sold for far more. If you want to be a "My way is better" hipster, then go right ahead, I won't stop you. If the thought that someone out there thinks you are a hipster is hard on your ego, then maybe reconsider how you view the world.

Baldtaco, I agree with empowerment. I do my best to teach to do, rather than to do myself. Not everyone understands how powerful a simple task can be when it comes to making someone feel more independent.

Yes all those 2" titanium prybars, mini "brass knuckles" fancy bottle openers etc. are silly IMO but a tool to snap twigs come on now. I worked at REI for 5 years and never saw something so specialized and pretty much useless. In addition I have worked in the Beer Business for over 15 years and NEVER carried a bottle opener. Gave a ton away but never needed a special tool just a lever improvised by a Bic lighter or the spine of my EDC.
As far as Hipsters go, I live in Berkeley California right next to Oakland the proverbial Hipster homeland. Other than maybe Portland there is no where more Hipster. You can call me what you like but Hipster would be like calling me short, fat and bald but I am 6' 1" 185 with a crp load of hair on my head. No carabiner key chain, no silly hats, no beard/mustache wax, no flannel, no fixed gear bike, I never drink Pabst. Think 51 is too old to be a Hipster anyway.
Maybe REI should stock cold chisels and lock pick guns too?

There is a sucker born every minute. That said, I'm not too surprised that something as stupid as this exists. Instead of some dingus glamper bringing a knife/ax, they would go "ooh shiny" and get this.

Billym, not calling anyone a hipster, just that when someone says that their way is the best way, its how it starts to sound. Do what you like man, its your life to live. As far as silly stuff like pick guns and cold chisels, lets not let that guys nuttiness get all over the forum, its bad enough already.

I was simply pointing out a piece of unneeded silly gear that retailers and manufactures are making these days. Over commercialization of the outdoors these days.

I've noticed the list of pool rules grows ever year. It used to just be "No Running", now it's 19 items and counting.
Good. People are gross and always have been. Just because the rule is new doesn't mean the behavior is.

Mmm...human soup. A wonderful way to exercise. ;)

I try to make my gear selections based on my personal need, and to let others make their selections based on their needs. I try not to get emotionally invested in what someone else buys and carries. If someone finds this useful, great!

Somewhere in history there were a bunch of guys sitting around saying "wha cha gunna do when ya run out of those, what ya call em? Matches? Get yerself a rock and a hunk of iron."

So you think little of your fellow man and are fine with adding more rules, thanks for clarifying. ;) :D just razzing ya'

Shove it(your beer bottle, not your EDC lol) into your forearm and twist.

And completely unrelated to billym's comments: "Give up defining yourself - to yourself or to others. You won't die. You will come to life. And don't be concerned with how others define you. When they define you, they are limiting themselves, so it's their problem. Whenever you interact with people, don't be there primarily as a function or a role, but as the field of conscious Presence. You can only lose something that you have, but you cannot lose something that you are." - Eckhart Tolle.

And now...enter a formidable contender!

Yeah, keep those insects at bay...on an easy grip docking bay right up against your skin lol!

Disclaimer: Certain mesh hats work because the brim keeps the net AWAY from your skin, whereas this scam is in a magazine full of gimmicks - page after page.
