Think I just found the dumbest piece of gear ever..

The funny tyhing is now that I found this on the REI website, Facebook insists on reminding me to buy it! Oh the irony!

Dang, if my wife sees it on that S. American river site I'm doomed to get one for Christmas...or birthday. I did get that 3" mini pry bar one year. I do not remember the last time I took a bottle needing an opener into the woods with me.

lol.

Billym, you keep bringing up REI(I know, you worked there for 5 years). They lost my respect when I saw how hard they push 'UL Backpacking' tents from companies such as Marmot, North Face, Big Agnes and of course their own REI brand of tents; I feel sorry for the people I see with these tents out in the woods. I myself have been a sucker to marketing in my lifetime, such is an inevitable part of living in the mundane world. Research is key, but yeah, I haven't made a purchase of any kind from REI in a looong time. Backcountry and sierratrading tend to have better deals on clothes anyways.

What tents specifically? Actually the REI brand tents are pretty good especially for the price. What is/are the issue(s) that you are seeing? I hate tents and only sleep in them on alpine outings where there are no trees. The store I worked at never "pushed" anything but that was 2003 when I last worked there. People COME to REI for tents; go figure.

The reason the mention REI is #1; that is where I saw the item referred to. #2 I have personal experience there.

It is OK for you not to like REI but how much Outdoor Retail background do you have to be a judge? REI is a pretty reputable business. Not a fanboy but I had nothing but great experiences working and shopping there. Are you a tent expert? Where are you camping, what are you doing? What time of year is it? BTW this thread was about a twig snapper.......

Wow. Seems like someone misinterpreted something.

The tents I mentioned beforehand are advertised as the "Best and lightest" available (lies), and is being done so by an outdoor enthusiast website (REI's).

SixMoonDesigns like the Skyscape X I use.

Or Mountain Laurel Designs (MLD).

Or TarpTent.

Or Hyperlight Mountain Gear (HMG).

Or LightHeart.

If you're rocking a tent from Big Agnes, North Face, or REI - you got taken. And like I said, I feel sorry for those people, I didn't say I mock them and tell them, "Hey, you got screwed."

"BTW this thread was about a twig snapper....... " then why did you ask me seven personal questions? "Oh the irony!" No insight to be gained here, goodbye.

The tents you've mentioned aren't suitable for all applications, just like those from the major companies you mentioned aren't. But some of them do have applications that MLD, HMG, and the like can't touch. Yes, some customers get "taken" but assuming everyone who doesn't carry a cottage-industry tent needs your pity isn't a very positive attitude.

Complaining about the "lies" of mass merchandiser marketing is an utter waste of time, almost as big a waste as complaining about complaining. ;)
