Think I was ripped off

He offered to refund the money if I return the sheath so I guess it worked out. Hopefully lesson learned, don't ship knive in envelopes.
Great, very cool of him. but don't count your chickens until they hatch.. once your funds are safe an sound in your account, then you can rest assured that it was not scam.

There are forums where I'd be skeptical of a scam and assume the worst; that's not generally the case here. I expect that the seller will make it right and it sounds like they are working toward that. IMO, it's early to be distrustful.

Good on you, seller, for working to make things right. Bad on you for the insecure packaging, but I guess you probably realize this by now.

best way to see if he tried to rip you off is check the postage on the envelope if it would be a lot more than just a sheath weight if he had to ship it, just a thought

No I just have to try to find another rodent 6 that's the worst part.......

Ya it seems pretty good here.. but it does happen, remember lazy otter?

I had a member mail me a rattlehawk, without a sheath, in a soft envelope. My mail lady handed it to me with 2 inches of razor sharp beard and spike poking out. He had put a little rubber at each point with scotch tape. There were 6 or so big holes in the envelope.

I chewed him out good!

I had a chucklehead (not from here) send me a Ratmandu loose, in a box, with literally two crumpled up paper towels in there. Box was crushed (of course) and blade was poking out. Damn thing almost chewed it's way out.

Pack securely, it's important. Don't do this:

Look at all the damn poke marks! I was hot when I opened that box.

Yea in the process but honestly who puts a knife in an envelope. Also the funny thing is the sheath was in there.

I do, but it is one of those giant bubble wrap lined envelopes that I then roll and tape all over so there is not way anything comes out unless someone slices the whole thing open.
There is no excuse for poor packaging IMHO.

I think if it really was lost in transit that I am more upset that there is a beautiful knife out there possibly in the hands of someone who doesn't appreciate it or even worse just some common thief who is undeserving.

I ship knives in envelopes all the time, the way I wrap them they are goddamn bomb proof.

Have seen many more rips in boxes than from envelopes, people tend not to use much tape on boxes so they rip and the items fall out of it. Envelopes your forced to do it and add lots of extra padding.

Sellers need to use more tape.

Glad it worked out.

Some folks feel shipping insurance is for the buyer. THIS IS INCORRECT. Shipping insurance reimburses the shipper for a lost or damaged item.

Therefore, it is incumbent on the shipper to purchase the insurance. The deal is NOT consummated until the buyer receives the knife.

If a shipper/seller decides to ship without insuring the package, it is incumbent on the shipper to make it right to the buyer.

IMO, it is always buyer beware. I've bought quite a few knives off the exchange here, several from posters on this very thread. All had good feedback on the exchange, and I've worked hard to get my buyer feedback good on there, and to reinforce their seller feedback. The feedback is important. All I have received were packaged so well it was a chore for me to retrieve them from the packaging, and I appreciate that. Typically, I'd have to say that the knives I've bought off the exchange have been packaged better or more secure than the ones I've bought directly from Busse or SRKW.

I would hesitate to say the seller ripped you off, especially if they had good feedback. But it is possible that a combination of circumstances conspired to result in a lost knife. Most unfortunate it was a Rodent 6; they aren't making those anymore, and it is a darn great blade. Good luck in getting resolution on the predicament, and good luck in finding another Rodent 6.

I'm glad you said this. People need to realize that when you pay for shipping, whether it's included in purchase price or added on, you are paying for an additional products/service that isn't fulfilled until the item arrives safe and sound. "I shipped it and my hands are clean" doesn't cut it.

I think for the most part sellers on here are honest. I tend to buy from people who post all the time. You know them from the posts, so you know the knife they are sending was well taken care of. They are part of the family so to speak. Now not saying there is a dishonest one that will pop in from time to time. Just look at post count, it has worked for me in the past. I got some great knives from some great fellas. Every single one of them wrapped well enough they could have been shoved out of a plane overhead and it drop into the backyard without harm.

I FULLY AGREE with everything you post...I just wonder how many sellers have ACTUALLY COLLECTED on shipping insurance claims they had to file?

I personally haven't heard of anyone who filed on missing packages getting any reimbursement at all.

But my friend tried like he** to get paid for a claim on a shipped Kershaw Tyrade that never made it to the Buyer but he just got stonewalled.... tracking- check.....sig. confirmation- check....$400 value shipping insurance- check...paid claim- nope

How about you HOGS? Anyone out there actually collected a shipping insurance claim?

Not me. But that's because the very few times my package has strayed, I've hassled them until they found it, always before the 30 day wait period ran out.

Sorry to hear that, hope it all works out well.
After doing the math and experiencing one USPS insurance claim process  not related to knives, I quit using additional insurance beyond the included $50 and put the extra expense toward my own coverage.
It adds up quicker than you think after you catch and release enough to the point that your own policy, or enough money to cover a loss, is in your hands until/when you need it.
As for the envelope, I only use envelopes with the smaller ones and enough padding to both make it unrecognizable and well protected.
The majority of shipping loss occurs from poor packaging.
