Thinkin of sellin some knives at flea market, want a bit of advice.

You can sell quality knives for a low price at flea markets. You can buy SAKs in bulk, Moras in bulk, the aforementioned Rough Riders which are supposed to be a quality el cheapo brand. I've seens tons of almost brand new classics selling for 1-3 bucks a piece at flea markets.

You buy a load of those knives for $1 each, sell them for $2 or $3 each depending on size, and more than double your original investment. Sounds easy, huh?

So let's say no one else at the market has the same knives for sale as you, and so you sell 20 of them in a single day. That makes you $20-$30 'profit'. Sounds great huh, $30 for doing practically nothing and visiting with folks all day.

But... what about your expenses? Flea market booth fee, gas, lunch. So after a few expenses you clear $10.

Ten dollars for four hours of selling. That's $2.50/hr. Worth it?

A buddy of mine did this, I helped him as the person manning the booth.

1. I was despised by those that had quality blades for sale. At the time, I didn't know any better, and thought the junk was just as good. Now I feel bad for anyone who bought one.

2. No money to be made, even selling them for 5-10 bucks each, there was little profit. Other items at the table helped salvage the day but they were motors or electronics.

That crap is so cheap and poorly made that it will be mostly young males that are really too young to legally buy them that will have interest.

I for one wouldn't do it because of the liability issues. At my sharpening & custom knife shop I also sell some production folders etc. If anyone looks young to me I ask for ID. No 18 plus years of age? No sale, unless Mom or Dad is with them, Period.

There is a retired man at my local flea market, he is there every weekend selling knives. (Well, every weekend that I've been there). He doesn't get rich from it, but it lets him hang out in the sunshine, talk to a lot of people with similar interests and he enjoys it. He sells a lot of them, BUT, he is the only person at that flea market that has a knife display. If there aren't other people with knife displays at your flea market, then go for it, a sucker is born every minute.

So, speaking of novice idiots: It's freezing cold right now, I just smiled thinking of that man that sells knives at my flea market in the summer. I always say hello to him and I have to admit that I have bought some "tactical" knives for gifts from him. But I now know from reading this forum that they are junk...well, at least I helped that guy with a little extra income that weekend. Do you think those great flea market knives I bought as gifts were regifted, or are they in a landfill somewhere??..... Yes, you can laugh at me, I'm laughing myself.
