Thinking about a 710 (But went with an 810)

I am looking for some input on a new knife. I don't have a shop nearby to fondle knives, so I wanted your opinions on how grippy the 710 is. I would think that the scales could be checkered if it was too slick, but I'd rather not. It seems like a workhorse, but I have a drawer full of knives that I was disappointed by. A 710 can't be a horrible choice, can it?

It's plenty grippy, designed to fight a bear. Awesome knife for the price too

One of the best in the line up!! Check out the KW exclusive! M390 with cool scales! Think I paid $169. Has custom scales put on mine and love it!!
Can't post enough pics of it!!

It seems like a really good knife. I've handled a few in stores. Haven't been able to get over the recurve yet, but the KW exclusive is about to push me over the edge.

Get the 710. Very few of us are ever disappointed. The stock scales are plenty grippy, and the recurve on the blade isn't a negative; with that belly the knife is an awesome slicer.

The only other option to this would be the crooked river, same size and build for outdoor, it looks fancy ;)

I put off buying a 710 for years because of it's size for me. Well, I will say that I wasted a lot of years not being able to carry it. For a big knife, it carry's like a much smaller knife. Its the original Axis design also, and they got a lot right on the first one.

That's true pmek, it doesn't carry like a large knife at all.
I carry mine a lot......not really for heavy use because my sons surprised me with it and had their initials engraved.....and it is comfortable in pocket!
Smooth as silk and tough as nails!!

Thanks for the replies. I actually ended up going with an 810 front nbrackett here on the forum. I just felt it is a stronger blade for the abuse I tend to put my EDC through.
I'm hoping I won't get flamed, but I have carried a CRKT M16-14sf for 8 or 9 years since I got it in 2005. I really hope this 810 will be a smooth transition. I am kinda worried about the G10 scales not being as durable as the HAIII aluminum I'm used to.

You will not be disappointed in the G10 and for $130 you get a very nice chunk of M4. It is just too big for me to edc regularly.

No worries on the strength of G10 bro!! Stuff is tuff!!
Congrats and enjoy your new BM!!

Thanks, but you have no idea what kind of abuse I put my knife through. I really liked my mini griptilian for cutting, but I didn't like prying or twisting with it, it always felt like I was breaking it. What is the grip spacer made of? I am thinking it is steel. If so at least I would have a safer place to hammer with, because I know G10 is tough, but I think it would get mangled pretty quick.

That is a nice knife, but it would kill me to use it. I would be thrilled to death if my kids got one for me though. I'm sure I would be in the market for custom scales too.

Believe me I know what you mean bro!! I don't beat on it, but I can't just let it sit on a shelf!!

I'm actually excited about a new knife, and I have high hopes. Unfortunately I am reminded of the last time I was excited about a knife, and that 670 Apparition was a letdown with a weak liner lock. It actually pained me to put it on ebay.

The 670 was a brilliant first A/O design for Benchmade...but the lock Was weak. On the other hand, it was simple to remove the torsion bar, and in a matter of seconds converted to a manual opener. And in the process made it a much safer knife. Whereas the 710 is a perfect fit for me, (So am biased owning five...) the 810 is just a little too big for me. Still it's a terrific knife.

The lack of a mechanical stop to act as a hilt is the main reason I shied away from the 710. I'm willing to bet that you would have a hard time penetrating 1" of drywall with a 710 covered in dish soap. The 810 looks like it would be much more resistant to slipping when wet, oily, greasy, or bloody. Not much of a swell, or even effective jimping on the 710.

The 810 is considerably larger than the 710 but I like them both for different reasons. If you are going to beat the knife the 810 was probably the wise choice as I think the wider inerliner would hopefuly give you more strength witht he twisting you described. The ease of carry, for me, goes to the 710 though as it is a little shorter and lighter but not as aggressively scaled so it can draw easier and still give a good purches. The desighn of the grip and the jimping allow for a good grip for my hand.
Frank.

I owned both and know without a doubt the 810 will take much more abuse than the 710.
The 710 was flimsy compared to the 810.
Wish I had taken a pic of the 710 while I had it apart to show the difference in pivot area.
The 810 is beefier all around and the M4 blade will resist damage much better than D2 or M390.

yes 810 is definitely stronger and more secure in the hand. However, it is not designed for piercing, for which 710 will perform much better.
