Thinking About a Man Purse

I use a walmart reusable black fabric shopping bag. I bought 10 of them, each costing 1$. they're washable.

This is a briefcase from Dave at www.saddlebackleather.com. Bar none the best bag I've even ever laid eyes on. Teachers do CRAZY things to their bags what with the books and papers we have to carry, and after 7 years of buying cheap bags and having to replace them within months, I decided to spend good money on a good back.

Dave's site used to say there was a 400 yr warranty on these things. Basically, it's like Busse...if it fails, they'll replace it...even if you're grandson is using it 20 years after you've died.

They just started making smaller "satchels" as well. Might want to look into one of those if you're not wanting to go tacticool. I know you're into leather, too.

Drop Dave a line. He's an outdoors guy and JUST might see the value in trading one of his bags for a great knife.;) Ya just gotta beat Stacey to it...:D

Those look pretty darned nice. I have plenty of nylon stuff, perhaps a nice leather bag is in order. I just wish he had some more pics of his bags from different vantage points and some more detailed ones of the interiors. I would find it hard to shell out $400-500 for a bag I never got a good look at.

Me and Jack Bauer carry the same bag. It is called a Danish School Bag. It is strong, versatile and cheap. As a teacher I carry loads of crap and it always serves well. That Bauer guy has cool kit. I wonder when he will discover Busse.

I have to agree with Ken44 about the Proteus. I have used one as my BOB (Bug Out Bag) for my car since 2005. It can carry an amazing amount of stuff by itself AND the hip belt can be used to attach more items (knife sheaths, lights, water bottles and small add-on pockets).

To make the Proteus even more adaptable, I added a pair of side clip suspenders to the pack. These attach to the hip belt where it joins the pack and uses your shoulders to take part of the load off your hips. As an added benefit, you can attach even more items to your suspenders for quick access (compass, whistle, sunglasses, watch, small knife, etc.).

The whole kit only weighs about 12lbs and is the only pack I carry on my hikes here in the Northwest. I just add a water bottle to a small Maxpedition Rolly Pollyon my hip belt and I am "good to go".

I have a countycomm bail out bag.Just don't get coyote brown like I did.I can't find shoes to match it.:p

I have a Maxpedition Colossus for a BOB/day-hiker of sorts. Holds a ton of stuff, and has way better ergos than the versipack.

I'll also second Mike's recc's about Filson bags. Buy once, cry once, and have it for several generations lifetimes. I have three Filson bags, and the all rock. Briefcase is my travel carry on, knife show bag and briefcase when needed. Have the XL outfitter bag for hunting trips, holds a ton and has a separate compartment for wet/dirty stuff. Also have another bag, can't think of the name, that functions as my range/shooting bag. All top quality. www.filson.com

I looked up the model #'s I have. Original briefcase: model #256. If I were to do it over again, I'd go with the larger model, #257. Extra Large Outfitter Bag: #239. Original compartment case: #264, if doing over... I'd get the large compartment case, #265. Some other alternatives: Small Field Bag: #230. Medium Field Bag: #232

another +1 for the Maxpy Jumbo Versapack. Mine goes everywhere with me, and holds all the essentials, mainly a 1911 and 4 extra mags, a Surefire E2D w/extra batteries, and a multi-tool.

Progunner,

When I get home (stateside TDY) I'll grab my camera and take some shots (and either figure out how to post or email them) of my XL Saddleback brief. I just got it earlier this year, but it's been around the world five times so far and I love it. And I definitely don't baby it (part of why I went with this). Fully loaded with books it'll still comfortably ride on just one backpack strap over my shoulder. (Usual load is laptop, change of regular clothes, couple of books, etc.) The small pockets inside hold my GPS/PDA and a notebook or a couple of CD cases.

I also have to give a nod to Filson. I've worn their clothes & carried their equipment in the northwoods (U.P.) for years. There's none better.

Hey Progunner, I'll empty my bag after getting home from my workshop tomorrow, and take a few pics with the wife's camera. PM me and tell me where you want me to send/post them. Believe me when I say I've never seen better than Saddleback.

Mine usually carries papers to grade, a couple of books, journal, glasses, etc. The pockets will fit most small gadgets (GPS, MP3, etc...) and there's even a false bottom in one of the compartments so that you can hide passports, extra cash, etc.

Schlotskey...you have good taste in bags. ;)

Please post them here....I'd love to see them too...thx.

Would love to see an shoulder holster size versapack. Or a slightly smaller one that had just a waist belt. I work as an Ortho PA and would want to carry my wallet, a couple scissors, pda, prescription pad and couple pens. I could ditch my lab coat and just go with scrubs.

Check out the EOD utility bag at countycomm.com

 Amen to that. I have a deployment bag from Cheaper Than Dirt http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/MOLLE302-19881-1964.html MOLLE'd to mine. It's a pretty cool set-up, I wish I had pics. I'm a low-tech throwback w/ no digital camera...
I used to carry this one (or one just like it) when I was living in NYC: http://www.ebags.com/manhattan_portage/dj_bag_large/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=52827 (thanks for the ebags link Plucker!)
And I still have an "Old School (literally) "Schulranzen" from Germany that looks almost identical to this: http://cgi.ebay.at/Schultasche-Bio-...hZ025QQcategoryZ62533QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

Do you think the Thermite Versipack is too big for that?http://www.maxpedition.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=4&idproduct=19

The reason for asking is that I ordered one, pretty much for what you want it for, with the addition of cell phone, and a few knives in Bill's Custom cases and it seems like it would be just about the perfect size.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Steve,

It seems a little big for my purposes.

I looked at some by Civilian. But they seemed too thick and thin straps.

Allow me to put in my vote for Saddleback leathers. I bought one of their dark coffee XL (18 inch) bags as a carryon, and loved it so much, I bought one of their large size suitcases as well. Excellent quality! Well worth the price.

I recently snagged a deal on one of their light tan Large (16 inch) briefcases. It was a "second" that has some issues like a little glue seeping out and hardened and some uneven stitching, but its still an awesome bag. Gotta love that full grain leather! Check that unmentionable auction site, sometimes they post seconds that you can get for a really good price.

The only issue is weight. My XL bag weighs over 7 lbs dry. Throw in enough clothes, toiletries, books, magazines, laptop, pda, MP3 player, documents and PSK to hold you thru a 20 hour working flight from Seoul, Korea to Buenos Aires, Argentina for an overnight stay, and the bag tops out at a whopping 40 lbs. The bag can take the weight, but I'm not sure about my shoulders anymore!
