Thinking about a sodbuster.....

Hey guys. It's been a while since I've visited the best place on Bladeforums, but I see that y'all have kept up without me. :p:p

I'm considering going to a sodbuster for my daily carry. I've been looking at a Case in red sawcut bone, but I'm not sure about Case's stainless steel. I'm also not sure about Case's Red Bone, as it has been spotty (figuratively and literally) in other knives I've seen on here.

I guess I'm not really sure what I'm asking. Opinions or options maybe? I guess let's just talk about it. :D

I love a good sodbuster. I'm particularly fond of the Case Jr CV/chestnut jigged bone but I've been eyeing the pocket worn whiskey bone in CV. May have to pick one up. Lot's of sody eye candy in this thread as well.

This pic doesn't do it justice.

My son loves his plain ol yella delrin in CV. It's his literal EDC. Stout little blade with a nice hollow grind for great slicing. And you can't beat it for about $20

Case's Sodbuster Jr is hard to beat in terms of traditional sodbusters. I've had the black stainless version as well as the chestnut bone in CV. The CV is the way to go in my opinion, but that's just because I love carbon steel. I had one like Tilley, but I gifted it to a little kid. It was extremely thin, but very stout. Easy on the eyes as well!

I am a big fan of the sodbuster pattern. Very simple working knife that for me seems to be up to any task at hand. I have both the regular and the Jr. but I prefer the Jr. it's size makes it a better fit for me. I also prefer Delrin because of both the durability and the ease of clean up. For me I like CV seems to not only take a great edge but also to have better edge retention. As far as the red sawcut bone I have found a lot of inconsistency in the dye with Case. One knife will be beautiful while another will be way to red or pinkish in color and to my eye just don't look good.

Johnny, I like that chestnut bone. Very nice.
Are you looking at a full sized sodbuster or a junior?
Definitely a junior. I'm not a big knife guy.

The Case Jr. in yella and CV is hard to beat. You can see my youngest enjoying mine in my avatar. ;)

Queen's Country Cousin would be high on my list as well, as would GEC's 71 Bullnose. If I was in the market for another that size though I think I'd go with a Case Pocket Worn Whiskey Bone CV.

I've got 4 in that pattern. Queen Country Cousin in olive green micarta, Case Sod Buster Jr in the black synthetic with the hollow ground SS blades and the plow blade etch, and then two of the Case Sod Buster Jr's in the bone handles with flat ground blade - Chestnut Bone CV and Amber Bone SS.

I pretty much like them all.

Queen makes a yellow-handled "country cousin" with D2 blade.
Doesn't have fancy handles, but the steel is very good. And it has a point to the blade. The Case kind of doesn't.

Love the Case's above...the jigged bone looks great. I have but one....but it's a keeper. GEC #71 Bullnose in red linen micarta. Always in the bag!

I'm gonna second that dirty yellow derlin. It's a true classic, I like it for sure.

But the pattern in general - I love a Sodbuster jr. I'm even willing to carry one in Case's TruSharp because of that super thin hollow grind they put on it - cuts very well. The CV is probably better for a keen edge, but I don't know because I haven't had any from Case, only GEC 1095. But the Sodbuster Jr's I've had have been joys - it's an ergonomically perfect knife and they have great personality. The bone knives (at least from Case) are also a lot thinner handled than the derlin, so if you can find them in a store might be good to hold one. One of the things about that yellow derlin ergonomically is that the handle is thick as a 2 blade knife otherwise would be, but the bone and carbon fiber Case's aren't.

Also, check out our Knifemaker's market in the folders - a guy called Taximmany makes several different sizes of Sodbuster, and people love them. They go quick, he does a really nice job.

It's really hard to go wrong with any sodbuster (size or metal), as both steels hold edges well. I prefer the CV, but some don't enjoy the blade discoloration that occurs.
