Thinking about a sodbuster.....

Hey guys. It's been a while since I've visited the best place on Bladeforums, but I see that y'all have kept up without me. :p:p

I'm considering going to a sodbuster for my daily carry. I've been looking at a Case in red sawcut bone, but I'm not sure about Case's stainless steel. I'm also not sure about Case's Red Bone, as it has been spotty (figuratively and literally) in other knives I've seen on here.

I guess I'm not really sure what I'm asking. Opinions or options maybe? I guess let's just talk about it. :D

I find Case's stainless to perform well. I don't know how it would compare to the CV but the SS gets very sharp, holds an edge reasonably and I find it very easy to sharpen.

I can't speak to the others but I really like this, my only one, the GEC 71 Bullnose. Love the thin 01 bladesteel and the fine edge it takes. The handle design and full flat grind with just a hint of swedge allows a sure pinch opening every time. Reminds me of a souped up version of the Opinel No. 7 I EDC'd for three years that brought me back to traditionals.

Yeah, I'd say it's in my top 5 most carried traditionals.

Thanks for posting those three US soddies together Frank, I hadn't really noted all the variations in handle and blade shape before, that your photo makes clear.

Can't beat a good sodbuster. I have two.
An early seventies JR that I rescaled in blue burlap micarta:

And a 71 Bullnose in black linen:

Anyone have any comparison shots of the handle width on a Case Jr. and GEC Bull Nose? I'm real interested in a Bull Nose, but my delrin handled Case was just too thick for my tastes.

No comparison shots, but they are similar. That thicker handle is a little more ergonomic for extended use.

If you want thin, look at the A.G. Russell knives in Rucarta or a Case in bone.

Do you know if the delrin GEC handles are any slimmer than the micarta?
