Thinking about a Strider...But hate blade play....

I'd love to buy one, but I need to see it in person before I throw down the cash.
No one stocks them around me which is sad because I live less than 20 miles from Strider.

The go to Strider, I'm sure they would let you check some out.

I had 4 SnG's and no blade play issues at all.
The power of rumor is alive and well.

You really ought to try one out for yourself. To say that 95% of striders have blade play is ridiculous. Looking up "strider lockup" or "strider blade play" on the forums will give you mostly threads about knives that do have play. This doesn't speak to the percentage of knives with bad lockup, it's just that when someone gets a knife that functions perfectly they are unlikely to start a thread on it because there isnt much to talk about.

Hello, I am wanting a Strider after many years of knife collecting.. Have had a few crks and I want something a bit more meaty. Smf or Sng... I have been looking on a few forums and have found plenty..The prob. is 95% have some sort of blade play.. Is it likely to have and own a strider and have a good long lasting lockup? thank alot :) Ernie

You likely wont get blade play, 95 percent is way off. It would be more like 5% as you hear more about bad experiences than you do good ones. I think you should just do it and ask the dealer to check it over. my 2 had no play out of box. The SnG I had got a tiny bit of blade play from abusing the ever loving shit out of it, but that knife was treated like a 5 dollar junker or a fixed blade. The ergos are great in use, little to no hot spots.

I will say the SnG is more comfortable behind the choil and SMF is more comfortable in the choil.

How much do they cost? And most of them have some sort of blade play.... sounds like a complete waste of money! Go get a tenasious for 30 $ and feel a rock solid knife. Thats horrible on striders part. That's like buying a lamborghini and they all have a screwed up trans from the factory. Another reason I'll NEVER BUY a strider.

More for us who know better

You have to realize you're dealing with high speed super squirrel operators here. The blade play issue is just a smoke screen to keep you from learning about all the other good reasons not to buy a Strider. I can say no more.

There are several myths floating around the internet:

1. Striders have blade play
2. Chris Reeve does not know how to HT his knives.
3. ZT does not know how to HT their Elmax
4. Hinderer does not know how to make flippers

and so on. My advice is to rely on actual evidence, not on hearsay. Just one man's opinion.

Gronk,

Not so sure about that, I just mainly use my knives to cut things like double walled cardboard boxes, rope, etc...nothing life-threatening. But please, feel free to generalize even though the OP inquired about blade play on Strider folders. You would have preferred if no one had responded?

PLEASE dont start the ''Mick strider is a douche cause of his background'' thing....

I love the posters who insist that those of us who have had Striders with bladeplay are lying or constructing some sort of conspiracy. If you won the lock-up lottery with a Strider good for you, but don't insist that the ones who have had less than stellar product or services from them are lying or have an agenda.

No one ever implied that you were lying. They simply stated that those with lock up problems were more than likely pre-gen 7 and even then, the people with lock up problems were in the minority. You're way too sensitive to be in this thread, as I am sure the crap is going to hit the fan soon.

Of course someone comes into the Strider thread to detract from a conversation about lock rock and take it straight to hell.

No I'm not being overly sensitive. Go back and read all the responses. The "myth" comments and other passive-aggressive comments about how it is over-reported or over-claimed. Sometimes people are so blinded by brand loyalty that they become dismissive of anyone who isn't part of the fan club. I have no axe to grind with Strider. I've also had to send back Sebenzas with sticky locks and some custom framelocks with issues as well. It happens. With some brands more than others. The latest complaints about SnG's are the sticky locks...which we're told we shoudl fix with graphite or a sharpie. I've tried that "fix" and it didn't work, nor should that be the fix for a $400 knife. I've also heard countless complaints about service as well as those who have had stellar customer service. Choose any knife brand or maker, they will have their loyal fans, and if anyone dares to offer valid criticism of said brand/maker they are deemed haters, liars, or whiners. It's not just unique to Strider either.

I doubt there's a brand out there that doesn't ship out something at some point that should have never make it past their doors. So far, I've been lucky and have yet to receive a bad ZT, Strider or Spyderco and it may be that I've been very lucky. I have no doubt at all that those that claim to have problems truly have. I think the point some were trying to make is that its not the norm...that's NOT to say that some haven't had a knife with issues.

I'm not particularly fond of striders. I have only owned one, a pt, and it did have blade play. I know people who has owned dozens of striders with no blade play however, so mine would seem to be the anomaly. Of course some of them have issues but no way is it the majority or strider would have gone under long ago. I would think that collectors of $400 range knives are not on a whole foolish enough to be blinded by marketing and brand loyalty.

I've started a poll on this issue:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1118018-Strider-owners-blade-play

Hopefully the haters and fanboys who pile on every strider thread will balance each other out and we'll get some realistic results.

Compared to other folders in the price range, Strider doesnt have the best reputation for quality control...especially older gens. That's common knowledge.
(Politics aside)
Having to send off a brand new knife to be fixed is just ridiculous when you reach that price level.
I may give Strider a shot one day, but not while there are better options out there.
Just my opinion...relax.

Best fix for a sticky lock- Clean the TI surface with folded paper, and the tang with a stiff rag, and then try the pencil trick. :)

Again, no one said you were lying. Negative reports will always outweigh positives; that is what everyone is saying. A sticky lock face is a symptom of non-carbidized lock faces. I don't mind stickiness; it doesn't hurt performance. In fact, I have heard of many people who prefer a sticky lockface.

Once again, the new gen Striders have very few reported problems. Buy one, if you don't like it, sell it for what you paid.
