thinking about edc/bush knife

Thanks for the link Brian! Looks like it's hollow. There are also three 'levels' of that model, with the pro being the most expensive of G10 and S30V. Cheapest is nylon and 420HC. Middle is the avid with some kind of wood and sandvik.

It's rough to edc a fixed blad knife for me...I tote a LM wave on the belt...and sometimes have a slippy in the pocket...
I love my Leatherman it's given me years of good service..it is not a great whittler, the handle is a little boxy for extended use...but I imagine if coupled with a larger blade I could make a decent go of it with that as one of my only tools. Yet it lacks the Soul that a cool rustic edc should have. (maybe I'm being a bit dramatic)
I always thought it would be awesome to have my edc be my primary use bush knife...a bush knife that is carried every day is truly a survival knifein the truest sense of the word. This also allows an individual to become more familiar with the blade and develop a real feel for it.
I feel when I travel it is sometimes inapproriate to wear a fixed blade , and I think it would be reassuring to have a substansial edc with "soul"
I guess I', basically looking for suggestions that bridge the gap of edc to bush knife...something that could be coupled with a larger blade to accomplish a multitude of bushcraft tasks.
I'm open to suggestions but am not looking for Saks at the time. THanks for any help

I'll start with a picture of my EDC Buck. I wanted something to EDC, that was sturdy enough to make trap parts, fire boards, etc. in the event I got off work early, it would be with me.

The Buck Alpha Dorado fills the bill perfectly for me. I have 2 actually, 1 in 420HC and 1 in 154CM. (I can't really tell any difference between the two :( ) It has a 2-1/2", hollow ground blade, and about a 1/8" thick. At first I wasn't too enamoured of the appearance, but it fits my hand to a tee and is one little sturdy sucker, to boot. And like Karl Malden suggests, "I don't leave home without it".

But remembering that this is being asked by Rescue Riley, I realized there is only one thing that would satisfy you:

I have the same problem you do. I love and hate my wave. It has all the tools I want and none that I don't, save the serrated blade, but is a brick when I carry it. Right now I EDC, in addition to the wave, a Ritter Grip mostly with my Gossman PSK taking that duty every now and again when I'm feeling frisky. I'm still not entirely happy. I'd love to have an EDC setup where all I'd have to do is grab my GB mini and go.

Thanks for all the opinions guys.... Doc, THat;s hilarious.... I'm also drawing up some custom designs.. that might pan out... keep em coming.

Hmm that's the real question I suppose, I guess a folder,,as where I live a fb carries too much hype with it, both in the eyes of the public, and the Leo's

Hey there RR! Are you in the market for sort of a bomb proof folder then? One with more traditional look and feel or it dosnt matter?

What kind of slippie do you tote around, is it not large enough to fit the bill ? Paired with a larger knife as you said, a decent slipjoint should do all your small knife tasks well.

Maybe outline a little better what you want the knife to do:)

Riley I still don't think ya answered my question, unless I missed it, are ya wanting a folder or small fixed ?

Are you wanting a fixed blade or a folder? I wasn't clear after reading your post.

queen moutain man
copper lock knives
Opinels
Trappers
svord peasant knife
spyderco tenacious-
spyderco paramilitary-
(although thw above 2 are not really traditional they are sturdy)

That paramillitary would definately fit that role I think. What it lack in "soul" it will make up for it utility ;) And it only weighs around 3.5 ounces in the pocket!

I doubt NYC is any worse than the UK on sheeple reaction...and over here I find this combo which can fit in a jacket or trouser pocket very useful when going out for a walk in the woods....

The fixed blade is a 3.75 inch blade Hiro Itou small bushcrafter in R2 damascus and combined with the SAK is very handy for almost all tasks...

But for a sturdy folder I can use this Mike Lamprey Damasteel titanium frame lock for any heavy duty work....blade length is 4.5 inches....

I do like the Spyderco Endura (non serrated) blade. I have the serrated version also which I use for some specialized purposes. It is a wicked blade.

I have the same problem EDC-ing a fixed blade myself even though I have purchased several specifically for that purpose. Two of my Dozier blades (fixed) are good EDC sized. But I primarily carry a fixed blade when I'm out in the woods hiking, hunting, or just exploring.

One you might look at is the CRKT version of the Razel. I also just got the ringed version or the middle sze (about 3" blade) and it will certainly work as an inside the pocket EDC blade. I guess it just depends on what you use a blade for, but this one has my attention. I wanted to get one of the Josh & Jon's customs and have settled on the CRKT version for now. If I like it, I may spring for the custom version.

It is hard for me to move past using my SOG Mini-Vulcan and SAK Adventurer combination for EDC. But I have been trying some new things like the SOG Access Card II which is another interesting little blade.

You should check out Lone Wolf Knives. I carry an 4" s30v flat grind that I just love. Mines a hidden auto, but they make it plain. I've abuse it plenty, and have yet to pop the lock. Check out their T1 and T2.

They have some in cocobolo, that might help give it some soul, though I didn't like the feel of the wood for this folder.

I have a Sharpshooter pocket sheath in which I carry a Gossman PSK and a Fenix light. It is a great combo in town or in the woods. I would feel the same about a knife from Stomper, Koyote or many other makers we have here. You could substitute a SAK for the light if that suited your needs better.

I'm pretty much a Spyderco and Kershaw fan. Those knives have served me well and when I'm at work I have both with me.
I still have/use/love my OLD buck 110 and it gets abused at home. Its been used for a pry bar, hammer, clean out horses hooves and dig broaheads out of trees...which made it into a screwdriver because I broke the tip off!!!!
At the house I have a folder and a fixed blade that I carry and at work its the folders.
So, Kershaw/Spyderco/Buck...just my 2 cents
