Thinking of Adding an ALOX SAK to my Daily Carry. Anyone Else Supplement their EDC Knife With a SAK?

Hey all.

I have been carrying a Spyderco Endura every day for the last 25 years. It’s a fantastic knife and they take care of their customers.

Lately though I have been carrying a nice CASE large Stockman instead. It’s a nice change that I’ll continue with.

I am going to add another knife to my daily carry gear. I’ve been trying to think what would be the most useful knife I could get. I don’t like the Leatherman type tools. Right now I’m pretty confident in either the FarmerX or PioneerX in ALOX. I really like the ALOX look. I had an ALOX given to me many years ago and lost it.

I think this would be the most useful combo I can put together. I’m just a tad concerned about the weight. One is 3.3 and the other is 3.8 ounces.

Does anyone else carry a SAK as a secondary daily carry knife? If so, what did you decide on and are you happy with that choice?

One last thing….I think both of the ALOX knives I’m looking at only come in the silver finish. I would really like to have one with some color, but every time I see one, the seller prices it way out of my range. Do you know of any other colors for the FarmerX or PioneerX that won’t break the budget??

Any info you care to post will be appreciated. Have a good week fellow SAK owners and fans!!

I almost always have a Vic Pioneer in a leather pocket sheath in my back pocket in addition to whatever one-hand knife I'm carrying. It's slim enough to not be too noticable, and is very handy as a backup blade or loaner. I also frequently use the awl and can opener/screw drivers.

I carry a SAK Farmer or Farmer X almost daily no matter what else I carry. I've never found them to be burdensome.

I can't post the dealer in this thread that I think has some color option Alox Farmer X and maybe Pioneers since they aren't a supporting dealer, but I'll post it on your profile page.

I have carried a Victorinox/Wenger tool in my pocket for decades, and considering how useful they are vs their weight/price, I think they are totally worth it.

In terms of colored Alox, I knew one of the major online seller does have an exclusive to red and black FarmerX, but it does have its logo on the plate at back of the knife. However, just as a very friendly reminder, the scales on Alox are anodized aluminum, so in time, they would fade and worn down once you EDC it everyday in pocket.

Personally, I would prefer the 91mm over the Alox family. The counterpart to FarmerX and PioneerX are Huntsman and Climber in 91mm family, they are a lot cheaper and have even more implements at a similar weight. I too would recommend to check them out as alternative.

When it comes to the various colors, aside from dealer exclusives, Victorinox comes out with a new limited edition color each year. Previous year's colors become harder to obtain obviously after that year is up, hence the higher prices on many of them. This year's orange Pioneer X is still available on the Victorinox website for about $12 over the retail price of the silver (admittedly though you can find the silver elsewhere for less than retail). Also, since a new year is nearly upon us, there's the option of waiting to see what color they have in store for 2022.

As K&L mentioned, watch for annual colors, in general some of the past colors will go for bonkers bucks if they are really clean, but they do turn up from time to time.
My primary carry is a SAK as it's what I can carry on a general basis where I am with no excuse. So I'll always have that, and the second knife will be based on what I'm doing. I think for most folks the Pioneer X is the better option unless you really know you are going to use the saw. The thickness of the pioneer X is really close to ideal.

Yes!

I’m gonna get one for myself as a Christmas gift.

I was looking at listings last night and saw several colors. Beautiful knives for sure.

Choices ……choices….

Absolutely look around. Different dealers have different color exclusives. My favorite regular SAK is the super tinker. I think the Pioneer X comes closest to the tool set, and with the "X" it has the scissors that are so useful!

Always have at least one SAK with me.

Lately it's been a huntsman, put plus scales on it to add a pen. The compact got me hooked, currently the Huntsman seems to have the right combination of tools for my needs.

If you are dead set on Alox, don't overlook the Cadet (especially if weight is a concern), Farmer/X is another solid choice, you really cant go wrong, just look at length, how many layers, and what tools you want and try one out.

I’ll post a pic of it.

I have to get a membership to IMGUR before I can post pics though.
I’ll get it done tonight.

Thank you all for the advice.

What do you all think of the slightly smaller models with the enhanced grip? I like the yellow one, I think it’s number 18.
I haven’t seen many mentions of that series and wondered what you all think of them.
