Thinking of selling all of my knives and starting over.

At one point I had about 20 spydercos, including about 6 militaries and 6 PM2s each. I have gradually reduced my spydercos to like 3 (with one iof them lost inside my house). But I acquired more RHKs and just recently got into SHF while always having a few benchmades and cold steels. The point again is it's a evolving process that takes time.
What I love about SHF is that if the ergos work for you, there are so many handle patterns to enjoy and carry. I have been hooked on this one since it arrived! It has incredibly smooth action and is wonderful to gaze upon!

See just like these two I bought last night and are in the mail to me today. Don't even have them in hand yet but I love them already. Just something about a knife that doesn't come from a big box store...

Can't wait to post the 3 @David Mary knives and the @CPE_Knives I have on order.

Caper and a Hunter @jjsmith
Apparently we have similar tase, I bought his brown caper last light and definitely considered getting the matching DP hunter too lol. I guess I should have haha. Got my tracking number from JJ as well this morning.

Definitely the more custom I buy, or semi custom, the more interested I become in them. I want to keep buying, but need to pump the brakes and sell more before I buy more. It’s not working out very well just yet 😂

That's about where I'm at
There's just too many options, I feel like I needed to narrow down what I liked. And it gave me the power to always buy them if that makes sense. Like, I was able to snag two Vehement Knives customs on a surprise web site release because I hadn't spent the money on some random knife that caught my eye. So now instead of two random knives that I'd probably not like as much and pass on in two months, I have two customs from a maker I've followed for years and am sure I love. A lot of it is just setting boundaries to the collecting vs. aimless accumulating, and knowing what you really like.

Very nice! The makers I've centered on are LG, Spartan, and currently Hinderer. I need to kick out one of them (probably Hinderer) and start following a smaller outfit. I have my eye on Farid as of late.

Recently I have been thinking about selling all of my knives and starting my collection over. The more I get the more I am trending to ordering from up and coming new knife makers. What I mean is I am thinking of selling all my factory produced knives and just buying and keeping custom knives.

Recently I have ordered knives from:

CPE Knives
David Mary
Volunteer Knives
JJ Smith
Brush Creek knives - Eric J.S.
etc...

To me having something that wasn't mass produced is more personal and more of a keep sake. Has anyone else gone through this transition? Do I need help or what?? lol

Even all my folders like Spyderco, Hinderer, CRK, Benchmade and my fixed blades including Busse Combat and Caruthers CPK, TRC, Becker, etc., I am considering factory knives now that they are so popular.

Am I crazy for wanting to sell all these???? I have at least 50 knives that I am looking at selling.

Thanks
Not quite your question, but I've noted the same trend in the world of swords where I spend most of my time. When people first get into the hobby they often want a sword, any sword. They usually get it too. Often something off of ebay of the stainless wonder variety, or slightly better, one of the ubiquitous chitanas because "everyone knows" that Japanese swords are the best, just watch any decent ninja movie.

From that they tend to progress to finding out that there are better manufacturing companies out there and learning a bit about the subject. Then they often start purchasing as many decent quality swords as their pocketbooks allow.

After a few years of this they sometimes conclude that a few high quality pieces are nicer to own then dozens of medium quality or lower quality pieces so their collection evolves again. The sheer numbers go down but the quality goes up.

This seems like a fairly often repeated progression. I could see the same happening to a guy that is into smaller blades as well.

I do like the suggestion of just keeping it all though. :)

I haven't done this, but I have essentially sold all my knives except for three brands or makers, and I decided I'm only buying those from now on.
Heck yeah, this is where it is at!
I am in the same boat for fixed blades (actually only 2 brands).
Out of interest, which 3 makers are you sticking with?

Buy what you like. After some time it is not unusual to be able to narrow that down, nor for it to change.
If you no longer care for a knife sell it, or if you need the funds to buy something you like better.
I still buy Sebenzas(usually older discontinued), but other than those I buy customs. It works for me, but each will take their own path-none of which are wrong, as long as that person is enjoying the hobby.

I haven’t read the responses so apologies if this has been mentioned already…

I’ve been a member here for awhile and have seen quite a few posts where people lament selling knives that they used to own.

My only suggestion is to go slow and consider at least keeping the production knives that you like. ✌️

I knew it!! 🤣

Congrats and nice choice, C. 👍🏼

I would not sell all your knives unless you have to to fund the new ones. It might take you a while to get the new ones and you might change your mind on keeping some of the old ones after you sell them. I am probably in the minority on this approach.

CPK, Vehement Knives, and Les George. I've been following VK since fall of 2017, CPK since maybe the same time, and am new to Les George as of this year, but I needed a folder maker to buy as well since, well, I don't honestly have a practical use for the kind of fixed blades I like to collect.

Been fortunate enough to have three Les Georges, two MK3s and a VECP; nine CPK, two K20s (including a ninja sword), a K18, a SS SDFK, a one-off tanto SDFK, a Boot Dagger, a UF2, a one-off hollow-grind UF2, and a DEK1 with a Shiv and SS FK3 on the way; and four Vehements, a custom Corsair, a custom Type 2 Fairbairn-Sykes dagger, a custom K2, and a midtech K2 with two custom trailing point knives inbound. Still have a Hinderer Jurassic, REK Ember 2.5, Spartan SHF Plague Doctor, a 2023 forum GEC, a Spartan Ka-Bar, and a 2023 DLT Christmas GEC in mammoth ivory, all of which have survived the purge down to three brands.

Can we try to keep this about the OP and his question instead of an inventory of everyone else's knives and who wants dibs on what?

Thanks.
Sorry.

I don't recommend selling all your knives at any point, but it is definitely worthwhile to go through them every now and again. We tend to accumulate, and probably most of us have more knives than we actually use, and even those of us who do use most of our knives I suspect don't actually need to use more than a few of them, they just like using them all. So it's good to kind of purge every now and then, pick up everything that had been sitting in a box or in a cabinet in the dark for a couple years and just Marie Kondo that pile of knives and see what still sparks joy.
