A while back Alayna and I went out for an adventure in the woods, just looking to see what all we could see and notice. She saw the K&M match case in my sheath pouch and asked about it. She said she would like to have one, and in thinking about how the compass worked on it, with it being a full circle with all 8 points marked with letters, that it would be a great training tool for learning land nav. All she has to do is hold it out and read the heading on the side away from her and she knows which direction she is facing.

So I set about trying to find another one for her. But K&M may be out of business, and I couldn't find any more of them in the US and the leads for European purchase options I found looked a little sketchy. So, I turned to my friends. I made up a post and was putting it in a few places on the net in hopes of finding one. Starting here in this forum. Before I even got the post in the second place, the problem was already solved . Phil had already stepped up with one for her.

Even though our outing for tomorrow has to be rescheduled a bit due to an accident, the timing of the safe coming could not have been better. Seeing the card and match case really cheered her up. She said the card had most of her favorite foods on it, and she spent some time turning from side to side studying how the compass moves.

She really gets a huge kick out of having her kit set up just like mine :)

They delay in outings comes from a pretty bad accident she had. Yesterday afternoon, right after school, she had came in, changed clothes, and headed to the neighborhood park to play with her soccer ball. It had been raining and it was muddy and on the way home she slipped on / tripped over...something...her ball and put her hands down to catch her fall. She landed on a curb that has a rough side of asphalt exposed on the back side, and it tore her hand open. When I heard her crying very loudly she was coming down the driveway with her hands and shirt covered in blood and my heart stopped for a moment. She was cold, wet, hurt, and near hysterical. It took a minute to get her calmed down enough to assess the situation. Her hand was torn very badly and there was minor arterial flow. That was a 6 pm. Eight hours, and two hospitals later, we were back home. Alayna has a total of 25 stitches in her hand, 9 internal and 16 external. And between the receptionist at the first hospital blowing it off like it was a scratch saying "oh she's fine, she'll be ok" as I was using up all of the paper towls and tissues in the immediate area to catch all the blood, and the young lady at the nurses station at the second hospital telling me I had to leave the area (right after they told me they couldn't stop the bleeding and may have to relocate the the OR while Alayna was still under) I am somewhat amazed I did not get my first assault charge. I kept repeating to myself that Alayna needed me there not in jail, and taking deep breaths. But they finally got the bleeding stopped and were able to complete the surgery in the OR. Being there as they put her under and her telling me she was scared was thee hardest thing I have been through in my life. Had anyone tried to physically remove me from that spot we would have all been very glad later that we were at a hospital ER, and I would have needed a very good attorney...

The damage is pretty extensive. It will be a bit till we can do more fire starting practice.

Sorry, I tried using the hide function for the one photo and it doesn't work on this forum apparently. So if it's too graphic I will remove that photo.

Nah, it's a good reminder that even though you try to stay safe accidents happen. You need to be prepared for them and have a plan-- most plans are to go to the emergency room. Remember, you don't have to be in the woods to do land nav. In fact, the city is where you often need it most. River is to the west.... I'm south of the main street.... I'm leaving the train station for the north south line headed west.... The compass, I find, is actually more useful in the cities than the woods.

Best wishes and remember that kids heal up quickly and are amazingly resilient.

Thanks man. Yeah, accidents can happen anywhwere at any time, and I know this. We have extensive first aid kits, but this was beyond our skill level to deal with correctly. She is a tough little girl, once we had her calmed down and assured that she wasn't going to bleed to death she was doing ok with things, untill they told her they had to put her to sleep so they could clean it out and fix it. That was almost more than either of us could take. She is doing really well today. She took a dose of the pain meds last night after the feeling stated coming back, but has only had ibuprofen for the inflammation today. She says it doesn't hurt bad enough for the stuff that makes her sleepy.

And that is a very good idea for the change in plans. I think will work on orientation and land nav in urban environments some this spring break. She sure won't be playing softball this season...

Wow... what a brutal situation with the hospitals. I can see why you had to restrain yourself. I think the picture at the end is fine and really shows what your poor daughter was dealing with.

And good on Phil for the safe.

Hope she heals up soon so we can see more fire starting!!!!

Had a few experiences with kids and the ER myself. 4 hours bleeding before we got to see a doctor, then 4 more before checking out. I feel your misery and anger. Prayers for a speedy and full recovery.

 Great timing on the gift Phil! Hope Alayna has a speedy recovery. She is a brave girl.

Good luck to your girl.

Several things come to mind: That sharp unfinished inner curb concrete edge thing is a city responsibility, and you should be able to get a compensation, or at least get them to fix it.

Wow, hospital care is way better in Ontario (in Quebec not so much).

First and foremost I hope your daughter heals quickly, that is a nasty gash.

I love that she wants her knife setup just like yours, that is awesome. I've got a 3 year old son and I can only hope to be able to do the same things with him when he gets a bit older.

Wow! That's a horrible wound for a fall. Glad she is ok! I agree about hospitals these days. It is becoming too difficult to just get in to see a doctor in these types of situations. Paperwork always seems to have to come first.....INSANITY!

I hope she is feeling better and it heals swiftly!

First, I am glad that your daughter and you are home and safe! Second, it takes are real man to put all that primal (and often justified) rage on hold for the sake of your child. Good on you and much respect. You did the right thing. Finally, I wish your daughter a quick and complete recovery.

What a great little trooper!!
"Doesn't hurt bad enough for the sleepy stuff".
What a little angel!!
Alayna, that's very nice of you to take your dad out with you in the woods! ;)
I hope you get better very soon!!
From RJ in Alberta Canada...

Would've been much worse had she not put her hands out to catch her fall. Just remember, kids are made of rubber, best wishes on a speedy recovery!

Best wishes, Alayna for a quick recovery. I feel for you Brian cause there's nothing like the anguish and stress that comes with an injured or sick child.

Thanks guys! Yeah she is a tough little girl, and in the process of becoming tougher. And yes it would have been much worse if she hadn't gotten her hands down.I am very proud of how well she did. No screaming or hollering at the hospital and not many tears.

Wow.. sorry to read/hear/see that she hurt her hand so bad. Great on you for being a great Dad to/for her. I'd have ended up in jail. But I'd seriously think about talking to a lawyer about the 1st hospital incident.

I hope you keep us informed on her healing. Hope she gets feeling better! Love and prayers from Iowa.

I feel your pain. I hate it when my little ones get injured. She looks like a tough kid. I hope she heals quick.

Best wishes and a speedy recovery for your daughter, very glad she is ok
Looks to be a pretty tough young cookie
