I coulda sworn that there was a bourban thread here, but I couldn't find it... so I started my own dammit! Well, muscle spasms kept me out of the gym tonight... but couldn't keep me out of the liquor store. We have a Binny's near me, which I believe is a chain. Not sure if beyond local though. Anyways, they are very well stocked and pretty knowledgable people work there. I missed the "beer guy" by about a half hour, so I found a guy that knew a fair bit about bourbans. I've had a few in the past that I have tried. Some I liked, some were so-so, and some were only suitable to adding to Coke. Examples: Liked- Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Basil Haydens. So-so- Knob Creek. Needs Coke- Maker's Mark. There have been others, but these spring to mind. Well, since I killed off the last of my Rare Breed... I needed something more.
Me and "bourban guy" talked for about 20-30 minutes on pretty much every top shelf bottle. (best stuff is always on the top shelf) He kept coming back to one named "Old Forester Birthday Bourban2006" It cost about the same as my Rare Breed, so I figured I'd give it a chance. Fast forward to now... I've finished my first two-fingers worth. THIS STUFF IS PRETTY DANG GOOD! I highly recommend all y'all take a gander at this stuff. Don't add any water or an ice cube. There is some complex stuff going on here. Ya mix it with Coke, and I'll come kill ya.;)

Let's hear your faves...

Needs Coke- Maker's Mark.

Absolute heresy. :D Maker's and the house's finest selection of ice will do just fine for me!

Have you tried Elijah Craig? I enjoyed that one quite a bit when I had it about a year ago. Can't find it 'round these parts, though.

Knob Creek is excellent straight, no water or ice. Makers Mark is good as is Wild Turkey 101. Jim Beam is good with ginger ale on ice. Getting ready to try Woodford reserve.

Elijah Craig 12 year old straight bourbon. Excellent bourbon at a great price point.

One ice cube.

Dang! I couldn't have said it any better myself! :D

And in fact, I think I have in the old thread re: bourbon, but since we're into a new one...

I actually prefer the 12 yr old over the 18 yr old any day! I prefer the taste and it is a steal at $19 a bottle!

But my favorite is Woodford's Reserve... Had a bunch of it last night, in fact, and ain't too much the worse for wear today... Very smooth and smokey as it slides down, and goes perfect with a cube or two.

But for hiking, I take Bookers or Bakers... 107+ proof! Can use it to clean minor wounds, too! :D

My mother-in-law works at the distillery where they make Elijah Craig. Excellent stuf, although I am rather fond of the 18yr but I get it at an Excellent price :D

Joe,

I've had and enjoyed all the bourbons you mention but lately the Elijah Craig is what I buy. Prices are state controlled here in NC but the other day I was able to get the 1.75 liter bottle for about $32. Considering that that is equivalent to two and a third bottles, that's like getting each for under $14.
Hell of a deal imho. Plus it goes great with a good cigar as well.

Prices are fixed here in WA, too... And the ABC stores don't carry a wide selection, and definitely not the larger sized bottles in too many brands... But on sale, for $18.95, is the best we can do... :(

Isn't it a RICO violation when a state exerts a monopoly on trade???

:D

My RICO investigating days are (thankfully) behind me now.

I no longer drink any alcohol but I do attend a monthly "smoker" where the Single Barrel Cigar Society gets together to share cigars and bourbon. On a couple of occasions I brought a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle and it always gets raves reviews from the members of the group and being some of the best and smoothest bourbon they have ever tasted.

It is available 15, 20 and 23 years old. The 20 and 23 year old stuff gets pretty pricey.

D'OH! I searched under "bourbAn" rather than "bourbOn". Oh well, can't have too many bourban/bourbon threads.

This Old Forester birthday bourban is mighty mighty fine stuff. Think I'll have another sip tonight.

ROTF!!!! Mongo, after a few sips of bourbOn, I can understand how a search for bourbAn might turn up empty!!!:D

And I, too, think I'll dip into some Elijah Craig after work today... IS IT HAPPY HOUR YET???!!!!

:D

Pappy Van Winkle 20 is the best whiskey I've ever had. Period... Hard part is finding it.

My Current favorite drinker is Weller Cenntenial, athough I do have a bottle of George T. Stagg for special occasions.

Noah's Mill is also good if you like a heavier, spicier bourbon.

I posted this in the makers mark thread and I'll post it again. 75% of Woodford reserve is bulk bourbon that come off the open market. Which means that there is little consistency in the end product. I have had tasted a bottle of woodford that is good and worth the $25 a fifth we charge. I've also tasted 5 bottles that had almost nothing going on. YMMV.

I got 3 bottles.:p

Nimick -- you comments on Woodford are interesting -- I bought one bottle of it to try and didn't really like it yet others give it rave reviews.

3 bottles? You have an iron will :)

This thread reminds me that I need to go out and buy a bottle of Buffalo Trace since I am out. It might my favorite bourbon and it is pretty inexpensive to boot. I like it much better than Maker's Mark, which I have not been too impressed with...

Living in Kentucky, I've tried most of the bourbons (premium and otherwise) out there, and I keep coming back to Wild Turkey 101. There are better (much better, even) bourbons out there, but to get substantially better, you have to pay substantially more. When the taste vs. cost equation is balanced, Wild Turkey wins every time, IMHO and according to my humble taste buds. Maker's Mark and Woodford Reserve are, IMHO, two of the most overpriced and over-rated bourbons out there.

Having said that, I am going to continue searching for the perfect bourbon. It's fun, if somewhat expensive.;) I'm on the lookout for the Pappy Van Winkle. Hopefully, by next Wednesday I'll have something to celebrate.

Take care,

Andy
