This is a bourbon thread...

I am seeing lots of good high end suggestions. What is everyone's favorite low end drinking bourbon? How low can you go without adding mixers? I am out of Makers and want to try something new...

Trader Joes has Rebel Yell, Wild Turkey and a few others. Suggestions on the low end?

Hi Guys
First post. I like Woodford Reserve. It is a mid priced single barrel.

Further Important note about certain bourbon products:

Single barrell products will vary from barrel to barrel. Barrel A (your barrel) might not be as good as barrel B (my barrel). The quality of a barrel is not the same as quality of a brand.

the same thing goes for Vintage blends (i.e. Buffalo Trace's Antique collection, Old forester's birthday blend, etc) some years are better than others, and vary significantly in taste.

Life is too short to drink inferior booze. I consider Maker's Mark the best of the "needs a mixer" bourbons. I'm really really really really liking the bottle of Old Forester birthday bourban 2006 that I am working through.

First... welcome to Bladeforums.

Second... words of wisdom: Try a good single barrel whiskey, or at the least, a select barrel product. Unlike bourbon, Tennessee whiskey undergoes a filtering stage called the Lincoln County Process in which the whiskey is filtered through a thick layer of maple charcoal before it is put into casks for aging. In the Tennessee whiskey category, Jack Daniel's Single Barrel and George Dickel Barrel Select are good starting points.

Other favorites in the bourbon / whiskey category: Knob Creek, Maker's Mark, Woodford Reserve, George Dickel #8, and Jack Daniel's black label.

I actually like the GD #8 better than the GD #12, but be warned...

I like Rebel Yell. Not generally a bourbon drinker, but this one works for me.

I like Knobs creek - 1 cube or straight. Keep your coke to yourself - can't stand that bubbly sweet syropy stuff.

Been interested in bookmakers's for a while but can't seem to get it hear in Canada.

I prefer single malts when I have the choice - but if Knob is around I have no problem with it. It is the cost of one of the cheaper single malts I like - LaFroige 10 years is a great single malt for about the same price if you want to partake in it. Very peaty and goes awesome with a good cigar. I also like some good cuban rum - the high proof, aged stuff. Then we go on to some good tequila, something of the order of Patron.

Just picked up a bottle of Wild Turkey 15yr. Mmmm Mmmm Tasty!!!!!

as far as Tennessee goes GD outclasses JD at every level IMO. There are also some insanely obscure Tennessee bottlings I have gotten to taste lately. They all made both JD and GD taste like swill. unfortunetly even If I remembered the names, the distilleries have long since closed.

I am still reluctant to open my bottle of A.H. Hirsch 16 I got for my bday.
I feel like I need some special very special occasion. Has anyone else tried this bourbon? It keeps calling to me from the kitchen...

Why worry about opening it? Unless of course you are afraid you will drink it all! lol!

Seriously, I think any 80-proof or above spirit keeps fine for a long while even after being opened. Open it up and have a glass!

There is a different drink other than single malt scotch whisky? When did that happen?

I do keep some Jack in the cupboard for some of my barbequing recipes.

Yes, it is F%^king awsome. IMO it is a very special occasion bottle. I'm still reluctant to open one of mine, and I have three (soon to be four).

this is relatively true, there are certain bottles that fade faster than others. Off the top of my head: any Macallan Fine Oak (days) elijah craig 12, peated Bruchladdichs. My Noah's mill is fading pretty fast.

The Hirsch 16 should last a few months before any noticable difference. then it will be only pretty awsome.

Single barrel Bourbon is a single malt of higher quality for the average price to scotch. Even most bottom shelf boubons qualify as single malt.

Jack is NOT bourbon.

Dang, Mongo...

I looked through your whole little bourbon thread here, and if I'm not mistaken, NOBODY has mentioned Booker's Bourbon. It's part of the Beam family of distilleries and is crafted by Noe Booker, who if I'm not mistaken is Jim Beam's great nephew. As far as I know, it is the only true Kentucky Bourbon that is bottled directly from the barrel with ZERO filtration or refinement. This is truly small batch stuff. I've never had two bottles with the same proof. It's ranged anywhere from the high 90's all the way up to about 126.5 Proof on the bottle I currently have in my bar at the house. I usually go through about a bottle a year since it's definitely a once in a while type of rocket fuel, very very tasty though!!!

Most of the time, I drink Maker's Mark or "Bulleit Family Bourbon Frontier Whiskey". Bulleit is especially good.

Cheers all, I think I'm gonna go pour a bourbon right now!!:D

I've been drinking Even Williams black label for more years than I can recall, but its been good smooth whiskey.

LOL!!!!... I think I did mention it in my response, post #5, near the top of this list! :D

But it's worth mentioning again!

Bookers is indeed awesome. I opened up my autographed bottle (signed by Fred Noe) to toast my daughter's birth with close friends. And yes, the autograph made it taste better :)
Contemplating saving my bottle of Hirsch 16 for the next birth....

My Bourbon pour recently has been Jim Beam Black Label...great stuff @ the price point.

When I'm given more allowance for this type of thing...Knob Creek (also a Beam product but a fantastic one.)

I like Bookers and Bakers but a bit pricey for me @ the rate I go through them.

I also have good things to say about Bulleit Frontier Bourbon...for the price a good pour if you like a heavier Rye tone to your Bourbon.
