This is a coffee thread.

Decaf; isn't that kind of like taking a shower with a raincoat on? :D

OK, I got one better for drinking Coffee at this hour.:)

My Father in law would make this.

Coffee Nudge

Nudge Recipe
Famous Restaurant Drink Recipe
Preparation time: 1 minute. Serves: 1.

Ingredients:

1 ounce brandy
1/2 ounce Kahlua (or coffee liqueur - try the Kahlua)
1/2 ounce creme de cacao (optional - I like it with this added. It then becomes a secret restaurant recipe!)
Coffee (decaf if late in the evening)
Whipped cream (optional, but I love it)
Instructions:

Put alcohol in a mug (I like a glass mug)
Add coffee leaving room for whipped cream
Top with whipped cream and serve

After experimenting with GOOD coffee beans ground in a GOOD (burr, not spinning-blade) grinder, I've become addicted. :-)

I used to only drink coffee in the cold winter months. Now I drink it every day of the year.

I prefer various East African beans ground fresh and brewed with cold, filtered water from a Brita pitcher. I really like some Central American and Mexican beans, too.

I buy most of my coffee via the web, from Intelligentsia. The stuff seems expensive, but considering you probably are paying a buck or more a cup for convenience store coffee, you can be enjoying the best coffees in the world for a whole lot less money! (Not to put down convenience store coffee... the two convenience stores in my little town both have excellent coffee.)

I like Lavazza "Gran Gusto" (and a few of their other varieties) for espresso. I buy my espresso beans from Whole latte love.

Stay sharp,

Buy green beans and roast them yourself. Doesn't get any fresher than that.

Frankly, I'm surprised Java didn't bring it up earlier. ;) :)

It is more joyful to hear the student so fully believe that he carries the teachings of the master to others less aware, grasshopper.

Is anyone besides me somehow affected by the smell of fresh-ground coffee beans? It has some effect on me that I can't quite describe... it sort of makes me anxious and full of desire.

I know it sounds silly but I'm serious. I got an order of beans in today and I just ground a small amount of some beans from Rwanda. The smell filled the house and it's driving me nuts! I can hardly wait to get up tomorrow morning and brew some.

Yup-per.

In the drip machine at home Chock Full o'Nuts New York blend.
On the way in to the studio Dunkin'
Black (expresso) coffee is Megdalia D'Oro or Bustelo.

We gave up on decaf...it just aint right.

Instant coffee isn't coffee.

Camping we use a percolator and it is the best...but we aren't good at mornings and watching the pot so we use the drip machine :o :D

When I am not mooching from Danbo :D, I have been buying the Costco beans that they roast in the stores. Danbo roasts up some great stuff!

My favorites of theirs are the Kona (not a blend) and Kenyan. The Kona is a little pricey at 20 a pound, but a nice occasional treat. I tried the Martinez (which is based about 3 blocks from my house) but when I compared their Kenyan and Kona to Costco's, I liked Costco's better and found it to be was fresher and cheaper.

Costco has fairly good local roasters' selections......and they are fairly fresh with several roasts to chose from. Danbo does roast well (and he roasts his coffees purty good too :D) He started with an old roaster I gave him and he brought the same fascination and dedication for his bladesmithing to roasting. He's shipped some pretty kick-ass green beans my way as well.

Still for the best and freshest, roast your own. The ability to dial in a roast to your own tastes makes all night caprine cavorting that much better in the morning. Great goat sex and great coffee - nothin' better!!

That does it. Danbo has tempted me, now Java has pushed me over the edge :D.
I am gettin a roaster from sweet marias!

I lean to the Bold Dark coffees with that smoky after taste.

Does this come from the type of bean and or the way they have been roasted.

I talked to the other coffee drinkers in my house last night and they have a great interest in roasting our own beans.

Do you know of a good place to look to get beginners started in drinking even better coffee?

Thanks, 555

Personally like the darker oiliest beans available local. Drank all kinds of coffee growing up (starting in my early teens ) since my folks didn't care one way or another. My favorite is a Peruvian
coffee from a store here, and also take Seattle's Best (home brew unless in the NW) over Starbucks. Seattle's Best - Henry's Blend
is my fave. I like my french press over the fancy machine of convenience (mid-model Saeco) that my wife bought. The french press reminds me more of Dad's coffee brewed on hunting and fishing trips as a lad. He made promise to not let Mom know
that he could cook...but I was thinking "is that what you call this?!"

People crack on SBucks and can understand why. The real deal for in shop brewed is in Seattle if you haven't tried it there. On the east side of the US, we get a tame and lame version. In Seattle shops my hair actually had a coffee buzz! I dig the SBest shop at the market being a toutrist.

We have explored a lot of varieties over the years, and tried roasting (it takes patience!). A buddy of mine only roasts his
own and it is fresh and good. I just have too many other hobbies
and stuff :-) But I enjoy my Henry's and other stuff out of that
french press each morning.

Favorite gear? Bodum's grinder and a lower end press - forget the model.

at home: Folgers classic roast is the best . Out--I LOVE McDonalds coffee. They just changed the blend and it is awesome!

One day I will buy a roaster and do it myself but now I honestly do not have the time with work being what it is.

And yea , the smell of freshly ground beans is like smelling bacon on a cold morning camping in the mountains. :)

I've tried Seattle's Best , was okay , IMO about as good as Peets.

My boss drinks instance 'coffee' daily , I do not know how he can stomach that stuff.
If it was like armageddon or something I could drink instant but for now , I'll pass :D

Also , cream and sugar , let me explain.

Cream and sugar temper the coffee like a fine steel , adding texture and a subtle gentle nudge into pure happiness and joy.
Horses sing and children dance when they drink coffee with cream and sugar , the lion lies down with the goat and rebeltf does an odd little dance when they drink coffee with cream and sugar.
Spinal Tap drink cream and sugared coffee before they play , the KGB would drink cream and sugared coffee before sending some poor sap off to gulag , our own Special Forces often enjoy a steaming cup of cream and sugared coffee before trouncing our enemies.
It is the foundation of society , close to the inventaion of the wheel.

And like I said , it makes me do an odd little dance , not unlike this.

LOL rebeltf

That dancing guy you posted just cracked me up.:D

Then it got me thinking what I look like after a 5 hour non stop drive with my quart of water that I always take along Plus that Super Big Coffee from where I bought Gas at.:D:D

I use these folks. http://www.coffeebeancorral.com/ I don't have a roaster, I just roast the beans in a cake pan in the oven on broil @ 300° to 350° and stir them once in a while. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to get dark brown to smokey black and greasy roast. Try African Peaberries, Ethiopian Harrar and Sulawesi roasted dark for great flavors.

If you like Folgers, you are probably too much of a wimp for these coffees.

Thanks,

This looks like a good source to try this out.
I like the information on using an oven and will be a big help to get us started out in roasting beans.
I think we will try their 1/2 lb samples to see what we like best.

We do not buy Folgers because everyone in this family like their coffee strong.:)

Fer all the fine nannies you introduced me to I figure 'twas the least I can do.... :D

No salesman. Java is merely a shill for sweetmarias. For all you bastids tempted by the dark mellow god this is the place to go for green beans, information, and coffee accoutrements. They carry a good selection of roasters for finer homes and even those in Bastidville. Sweetmarias is a great place to start on the road to roast addiction. Happy trails and my cut is a mere 10% of all gross sales.......
