a) relax
b) call the shop

and likely:
c) send it in to the shop
d) wait
e) be happy

or there about.

not sure what happened, but INFI isn't rust proof.

Without reading any of your post and responding only to the subject, do you know anything about steel? Rust resistance means absolutely NOTHING to the "cheap"ness of steel.

It looks stripped, there was probably a layer of decarb under the coating. Send it in for rust removal, looks like you may have some pitting, it's hard to tell...

I wonder if there's an ingredient in the coating that rusts (or something that got on it). The exposed edge doesn't look rusted at all.

Of course, that fits the decarb idea as well. The sharpened edge wouldn't have decarb on it.

S30V will rust, 154cm or ats34 will rust. Any of the stainless knife/tool steels will rust. Cheap stainless usually doesn't! If they didn't rust they would be impossible to sharpen and useless as knife steel. The shop will fix you up.

Wow that looks f#ckin terrible!

Can I have it?:D

Seriously, that sucks and I hope you get it fixed.

the shop will certainly take care of you, that said that does not look anything like a factory satin finish, looks almost double cut. If it is double cut (blasted) then it is more susceptible to rust, if it was a home done satin and there is pitting and decarb then it will rust easier, or you can box it up and send it to me for proper disposal :D

I think it's green coating.

added: I've been corrected. :)

I don't think there was a Competition Finish version of the NMSFNO
The bead blast done by Busse is followed by another round to seal the exposed pores.
This is the double cut reference.
I find that it is still more susceptible to corrosion,
But it is by far my favorite.

An aftermarket bead blast treatment most likely does not include the second treatment.....

i love busse knives and im not nocking on their blades in any way, i have other 25 to 30 blades from them.
like i said i just want to know what went wrong here and what can i do to fix it.

I would have had a stroke if I had pulled that out of my safe:eek::eek:
Going to check and lube now:rolleyes:

Everyone should know that carboard can hold moisture and is not the best long term storage option,
Unless you oil the blade....

I think this knife has had blood on it for too long. my dad had an old WWII nazi SS dagger that must have been used to stick somebody.. you could sand the rust off, and oil it, then the the same spots would reappear within the month.. every time you sanded it... This means the knife is cursed, but I can do an exorcism if you give it to me. :)

Well, to find out what went wrong, lets go to the beginning, looks like you bought the knife from here:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=721982

And if you completely missed the the first reply from silverband which was
"If it is new and/or original finish in excellent shape I'll take it."
So if he didn't get it, then I guess it wasn't the original finish and/or in excellent shape. This should have raised some red flags before you bought the knife.

You could have gone to http://www.bussecollector.com/catalog/ and checked to see that the double-cut was never an option for this knife from the factory. And even if it was, if you did your research, you would know that you have to maintain double cut because it is most likely to rust if not kept properly.

So what went wrong is not Busse but because you get what you paid for. The original seller probably stripped the blade himself. You should have known this and done the research if you are shelling out the funds, so I would know your facts before shelling out money.
