This is HERESY!!! Knife Opinions

Compared to 10-15 years ago, in the traditional area, I would say that the biggest change I have seen is a resurgence in the popularity of traditional patterns. When I first joined up here 11 years ago, modern folders and assisted folders were the main interest for most people. This subforum was rather peaceful and slow paced.

So I suppose the 'heresy' compared to 15 years ago is "traditional knives are cool again" which was not true back then. Which is unfortunate, because there were more choices of brands and vendors back then, but they were not cool and many of those companies went out of business. Now they are cool, but once something goes away, it rarely comes back.

I’m not trying to “win the game” here.. just pointing out that selective application of principles with electronics vs. knife country of origin doesn’t win anyone virtue points. Navigate the market and select what you desire.. but people thumping their chest about not buying knives from China while operating computers made there to post their comments is a bit ironic. That’s all.
Well, that’s why I took my smart phone and IPAD apart and put -um back together. Now I can say that they were made in the USA. Looks like I’m going to have to do the same with my foreign knives. All I can say is THANK GOD FOR YOUTUBE ! 🙏😜

Don’t care about virtue points. I simply navigate the market and select what I desire. No chest thumping, just honest feelings. I will buy goods made in our country when available. It’s simple and not actually ironic at all.

I know it is a dead horse.. beaten to a pulp.. but HOW can people criticize knives made in China while literally posting their comments to this forum on a phone.. made in CHINA?
Because cellphones and computers aren't made anywhere else as far as I'm aware.

The idea is to buy the domestically made option whenever you can and support your own countries industry of manufacturing, caring where things are made while accepting the fact that there's just not a domestically made option for some things.

That's definitely the worst thing that has happened.
Just imagine if that popularity hit back then, Queen would probably still be in business hopefully having improved their QC, UTICA wouldn't have dropped most traditional models, a little earlier could have potentially saved Schrade & Camillus, Buck may not have neutered their slipjoint line even adding them to the Custom shop, and maybe with more competition GEC knives might stay on the shelves long enough for the average buyer.

If you want a reasonably priced multi-blade folder, you've got to buy Chinese made product.

Is this a Dr. Who thing? Will have to ask my daughter to explain it to me!
Star Trek Next Generation. The Bog are an omnipotent AI in a body of smashed ships. Captain Jean Luck Picard was assimilated by a Borg (a hive mind) and they named him Locutus. He overcame the Borg invasion of his mind. The end.

Check…
And my Opinel cost me $17.
Annnnd mate.

I love Victorinox and I’ve become a real Opinel fan in recent years. Classic, reliable knives at prices that are hard to compete with.

and as hard as I’ve been on Case, all of mine could probably last my whole life cutting various appropriate things. As much as I hate fixing their factory edges, it’s still a fair brand.

The only heresy in my mind is putting a pocket clip on a traditional. Makes my eyes bleed.

15-20 years ago? Let's see...just off the top of my head.

GEC would not move off the shelf. Everyone said the pulls were two hard, jigging sucked and the acrylics were ugly. If you wanted a great knife buy Queen or CSC. That didn't age well.

Case was behind the times ..yada..yada. Now they are making modern steel EDCs, have collabs with premium knifemakers and have introduced some killer patterns.

Clips were more popular than spearpoints and whatever foot blades were usually a secondary.

Knife purses are for dandies. Now everyone has one, although I still think they're worthless.

Just what sort of real pressure work do you do? Evidently, not enough to be able to afford a BF Membership.

Frank @knarfeng once said I was blunt spoken. I guess he's right.
You have way too many posts and are way too old to be that disrespectful. No need to reply if you are not interested in the content.

I've tried them all this year.

The knives made far east overseas are definitely better than they were in the 90s or early 2000s. Rough Ryders are a gem at the price point. Obviously there's strong feeling about this here but I like em. I mean, I'm not going to use my Case knife as a lathe graver but didn't think twice about throwing the RR on there. Worked like a charm too.

As far as USA made, Buck seems to be the same as I remember in the 90s. They've been making their same quality of stuff for years. I bought 2 Case and other than the crazy blade rub on the stockman they are sweet. Klein still makes a few in the USA but unfortunately their traditional styled work knives are not. (Luckily the older USA ones are not hard to find) I enjoy the USA made Klein hawk even though it is a plastic handled lockback.

Most interesting new USA traditional knives other than Buck or Case are now considered collectors items. It's been a strange experience learning about how all of that works and I'd rather not get involved.

Antique/vintage/old/used US knives from the makers of the past .. that's the good stuff.

Honestly I've become more excited and interested in European traditional folding knives. The French makers know how to make a bad ass, gorgeous traditional knife and put some sexy wood on it. They also make these knives for every price point with many different options for covers. A Wright seems to be a winner as well, but I'm only on day two with it.

There's definitely something out there for everyone!

I'm rambling like a fool and probably off topic as hell, but this is just my experience over the last year or so. Probably includes some heresy. I'm not quite sure what all of your polls are trying to do anyways, but it's been interesting to read!

Should I hit the post button.... Ah what the heck🤣😂🤣😁
