This is HERESY!!! Knife Opinions

I won't comment on the Chinese knives but as for Case being no good for work, that's rubbish.

I carry a Case every day of my life. It is in my pocket constantly and is used on a daily, often hourly basis.

This knife has been around the world with me half a dozen times and is always my primary cutting tool choice because of its size and unobtrusiveness.

Nice choice of knives! Here's my current favorite:

The comments about Case knives made by the OP are obviously from someone with very little experience and knowledge or just a troll.

Ed is a well respected member here, something that you might be one day if you read more and speak less.
Respected member or not, basic manners are appreciated by all. The title of the post indicated these were opinions meant for discussion. Not an excuse to disparage a new members work or economic standing. Way to attract new members….

What have you observed about the state of knife-making today that might have seemed like heresy 10-15 years ago?
Focusing on traditional folding knives here.

My list:

==>If you want a reasonably priced multi-blade folder, you've got to buy Chinese made product. Quality has improved tremendously. Rough Ryder, Cattleman, Buck Chinese, etc make better, i.e. sturdier, sharper, higher quality, knives for the money than Case and other favorites do.
==>Buck classic folders have slipped a little bit in quality, and the 420 HC steel is arguably not as beloved as the former steels (425M, 440C), but Buck makes a rock solid working knife. The 110 / 112 / 501 / 55 are still virtually indestructible.
==>Case makes the most gorgeous folding knife around, but it has become a "pretty boy" knife. Awesome to look at and use to cut fruit or open mail, but will wilt under the pressure of real work.
==>Way too many expensive knives, greater than $300, that will never be used. Too many of these are viewed as investments.

Your opinions?
1. I have observed that there are many more people now who want to put their Opinions out there as fact .
2. A " Reasonable Price " varies from person to person .
3. Quality of a knife is a subjective point . Is the product made to the specification or not is the question ????
4. A person either wants 420 HC steel in his blades or doesn't . Is it made to the Maker's Specification or not .
5. I prefer another brand than Case and it performs to my expectations . I have seen too many Case knives used to agree with you .
6. Too Expensive of a knife to you may not be to me . Whether they are viewed as investments or not is nobody else's business .
7. I can only assume that you may have never paid more than ?????? for a knife , but that is not any of my business .
8. I did buy a couple of new knives made in China for $25 each . They were too small for my hands and as such , not worth the money to me . I have since given them away to some Great Grandsons .
9. I worked for a company that lost many workers due to the work being being sent to other places . One of those places was China and I had some very high priced parts Rejected because China claimed they " Did not understand the Steel Specs . " So they substituted something else .
10. I have found some very well made knives that are designs that I like that are made in the U.S.A.
11. The huge increase of people out there who can and do make some fantastic knives is great to see IMHO .There is also a Market for them and I wish them all the best .
12. I don't buy knives from China for many reasons to me . I do buy knives made in other countries .

You have way too many posts and are way too old to be that disrespectful. No need to reply if you are not interested in the content.
Couple things, bud;
1) yesterday at 5:51 pm you posted in who still Carries a case knife, post # 3,897 you posted a picture of your favorite new case knife and spoke about it
2) yesterday at 7:50 pm you posted in EDC XIII which knife or knives are you carrying today ā€œcase trapper pocket worn red boneā€ post # 109,553
3) today at 1:38 pm you replied to ā€˜what traditional knife are ya totin today’ with post # 260,832 ā€œCase pocket worn red boneā€ among others.

So if Case is such a pretty boys knife that won’t stand up to real use then why are you carrying one and showing it off like you’re proud of it?

Just curious

Because I love Case knives! Nevertheless, they are meant for lighter work and fancy occasions- in my opinion.

Ok, maybe you don’t realize how the term ā€œpretty boys knifeā€ might be offensive to some(most) people, but it is also incorrect. Case knives have been used daily for hard work longer than you have been alive.

For that I certainly apologize, I meant no offense, actually was trying for humor. I am also Case user/collector, so put me in that group.

Yes, you asked for opinions in your original post but I took it as more of a bash, especially, against Case knives.

No way can this knife be considered a light duty knife. Fancy?? Yes, but not light weight. Note this knife was made in 2020. Case still has what it takes.

What’s the basis that you say this? I mean, what kind of cutting have you done where a case knife failed on you? Here’s a short list of things I’ve used mine for; cutting heavy plastic, stripping wire- 10/2 Romex, cleaning fish, whittling, gutting deer/bear/hogs, even butchered a couple deer with a case jumbo stockman, cutting open Copenhagen cans, even used the Spey blade to break into an old truck I had when I locked the keys in it on a date, all kinds of blister packs and zip ties have been cut, and this was all done by the same case knife. Still have it. Still tight and in good shape. I’ve never pried a manhole cover off the street with it but a Chinese knife won’t stand up to that either.

My apologies Ed. I can see why you came back at me so hard. I want to have good relationships with all forum members. Can we move forward with kindness and consideration? Id appreciate it.

What have you observed about the state of knife-making today that might have seemed like heresy 10-15 years ago?

2023-15 = 2008
> The focus has changed to greater focus on a higher quality traditional knife and paying more for it.
> An increased interest in slip joint knives throughout the cutlery community.

In 2008 GEC was just starting out. The knives were curiosities. Few people knew the brand or understood what they were. GEC changed the paradigm for traditional patterns. Before they took off, Case focused on cutting costs. Now they focus on making a nicer knife. You pay a bit more for it, but it's what the knife community is looking for.

In 2008 companies who focused on the latest and greatest paid no attention to slip joints. Now it's hard to find a high end outfit who does not make at least one slip joint model.

And I will likewise take exception to the thought that Case and GEC are just "pretty boys". The knives are well made and will turn in a good day's work.

You don't think Case knives can " Slice and dice " things ?

I find case knives more than adequate for hardwork. I carry a large trapper in my left pocket probably 50% of the time.

I'm not a trapper guy myself, but the 54 pattern is quite a popular choice of working knife for those who do like the trapper.
Anybody who says Case doesn't make hard working knives has probably only had the tiny Texas toothpick or something.

Just think how many large sodbusters over the years have been used and abused till there was nothing left.
