Unfortunately I can't be fireman in Denmark (even if I have a lot of diplomes as fireman in France)becaue I'm 173 centimer high...and in denmark to save lives you have to be 175 cm... thanks again for the pics of your CRK...mine should arrive tomorrow!!!:D

That stinks. We have some pretty short guys on our department. We use them for confined space rescues! :D

Hey Oli et al

This law is complete insanity! Our politicans are about to make criminals out of a lot of law abiding citizens.
I fear that the real reason for this is just like some have already mentioned; to give the police new and sweeping rights to search anyody they wish - without any reason.
Welcome to the danish police state!:barf:

Is there an exception for those that carry a knife for religious reasons or as part of national dress? (I'm not certain but I think that is the case in the UK)

Maybe it's time to found another church? The church of St Browning and St Glesser perhaps?

Milu,

Hehehe! Yeah, good idea! I just joined the church of St. Busse and St. Camillus!:D
But no, we do not have rules like those here....!

If this keeps up, some fellows in some countries would end up carrying just toothpicks!! :D

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I thought Canada was bad.

I even think some leftists here in Canada and States' gotta think and ENTIRE ban on even carrying small knives in public for utility purposes is TOO much. But then again, I think a ban on carrying anything in public by a law abiding citizen is pure bullshit.

As it has been asked before, what about when your fishing? Hunting? What if your a chef? What if your an artist and you need a small blade for your work in public? What about LEO's... can they even carry a knife or a multi-tool/SAK while on duty?

J-man,
As I have understood this law proposal (which will probably be law in a very short time), people who need knives for work, can transport them to and from their place of work, as sportsfishermen, scubadivers, hunters and others with "a worthy reason" can.
The moment it becomes illegal, is when you can't provide a reason for carrying a knife (or transporting it in a back pack or so if it's not wrapped in something and difficult to access).
This will be an insanely difficult law to enforce and the very point of it is ridiculous.
As I mentioned before, I belive this law is put into action to give the police more power and take away even more freedom from the citizens.
I know a couple of danish police officers who couldn't care less about what people carry, but unfortuntately they are not all like that!

As the law seems to be reality, we have to do what human beings do best - adapt! (Or get the h*ll out of Dodge!)
I think "low profile" is the key to be out of the police's search lights.
I am pretty sure that they would rather frisk a young guy with an attitude in baggy pants, reversed baseball cap and a way too large "50 Cents" t-shirt, than a well behaving guy in clean, fitting jeans, shirt and jacket!
Yeah, I will keep on carrying anything I please, but I will do so discretely, concealed and low key - and avoid obvious trouble spots as well!
And if I happen to get caught carrying a 4" fixed blade in my back pack, I will go to court to make them prove that I was indeed not on the way to or from "something" where a knife is OK!

I think the rule "Keep low and you'll stay low" applies here. Most LEO's probably don't want to waste their time going after someone for carrying a knife when someone could be stabbed in the alley around the corner.

But hey, I wear loose (probably baggy) jeans... But I'm not a criminal (well, I guess the "prohibited" knives at home qualify me as one, but I haven't hurt anyone).

j-man,

You know, I really hate that people (including myself) are judged by their clothes and general looks!
It just happens with everyone - again including myself! I think that we - and that also includes LEO's - are so used to stereotypical images of "bad guys", looking one way or another!

I'll tell ya, I have never ever thougth of myself as looking "bad", threatening or anything else (apart from fat, which I can't claim not to be!:D), but not too long ago, I was labeled "biker gang member", tough guy and "a bully" by different people who actually should know me better!
"Biker gang member".....jeeze Louise! I own a friggin yellow, italian 50 ccm. scooter! Gimme a break!
The reason for this? I was wearing black bdu type pants, black t-shirt (the only one that didn't smell of dead wilderbeast that particular day!) and just got out of bed (=uglier than usual!).....
it's friggin easy to get labeled!

Yeah, the new proposed knife laws in Denmark suck alright! The politicians basically took a few recent incidents involving knives and are now trying to use them as a basis for passing very strict laws that will affect everybody. I don't really think these laws will stop the potential evil-doers from carrying knives though. If you're willing to spend your saturday nights picking fights and then whipping out the knife you brought for just that purpose I don't think you have any problems breaking a no-carry knife law as well.
The only people this law will affect are the knife-enthusiasts who carry their knife as a tool and use it responsibly.
Well, being a balisong nut in Denmark I'm used to the restrictions of the laws here, this is just another nail in the coffin for legitimate knife-enthusiasts :(

Edited to add:
Btw. as someone said it's still legal to carry a knife if you can state a meaningful purpose for carrying, such as going camping, fishing or job-related uses.

I thought the current knife laws in Denmark already buried the coffin over there? :(

Silver Bali,

Very true! The law will affect people who are already in accordance with the law and have no desire to use their pocketknives as weapons. The criminals who have no respect for the law anyway and will continue to carry and use whatever they want!
In effect, they are criminalizing the general population for carrying a tool and again they are trying to treat the symptomes rather than the causes of the problems with crime!:(
You as a bali enthusiast must have heard a lot of B.S over the last couple of months, eh? "-The disgusting, deadly butterfly knives" as "Extra Bladets" editor wrote some time ago!

Yes, I feel the "sting" every day, mostly because of the bad reputation the balisong has recieved due to the media. Few people outside the knife community understand that balisong or butterfly knife is not just another word for trouble. The typical newspaper headline involving balisongs will usually also involve gang members engaged in criminal activities such as snatching purses from old ladies. This stereotype image has given the balisong such a bad aura that most people don't see that it's really just a knife with an unusual opening mechanism. There's no special "evil attributes" to it as the media would like us to believe.

Exactly!

I'm with you guys! As it has been already discussed in another thread posted by Carl (lost a knife today...), maybe it would be a good idea, for the defence of our hobby, that every forumites wishing to act up, send a letter written on a model to the danish prime minister. As a bonus we could as well, send copy of those letters to a newspaper that would give us support?
What is the point of view of our Dans here? what suggestions would you make?

Oliver, there are no good replacements for a knife as a tool, but as a weapon there are many other conspicuous carry items that will not attract attention. A heavy made metal pen would be handy, a walking stick or cane, metal clipboard, metal drafting ruler, gardening tools and other tools, etc. The rock and the stick are oldies but goodies.

what will all of the Danish BladeSmiths do? This sounds so strange to be true!
