This is not a drill (traditional knives)

That's an M43. The hollow along the spine is nothing more than a simplified Sword of Shiva.

This is an Ang Khola. The angle isn't great, but you see that hollowed area near the bend? That hollowed area is what makes an Ang Khola.

As to khukuris, they're like slipjoints. It's largely a matter of taste, get the model you want. They're all superlative choppers, as long as you stay away from the long, narrow blades.

Thanks for the clarification. I just want it to be a quality one, preferably the Ang Khola, and not prohibitively expensive...
I don't ask for much, do I?

What's prohibitively expensive? You have a hand forged pound of steel (at least). How much, or perhaps how little, do you think one should cost?

I would like to keep it around $100 to $150. I've seen some that are easily three times that much. I don't need that level of quality.

We are still camping in Prince Edward Island. Before we left I picked 7 knives to bring along and took this picture.

Lambsfoot: Because no self respecting guardian would leave his flock of one lamb behind.

93 RAM: Did I mention I LOVE this knife :)

Blue Vic Farmer: Best all around camping knife/multitool.

Vic electrician and Remington trapper: Great knifes. I just won them in a GAW ( TY JohnDF JohnDF ) promoting outdoor activities

Opinel ( stainless and carbon ) : Food prep.

If I only could bring one to camping it would be the farmer however so far I have only really used my lambsfoot

This was a hard exercise....
If you asked me a month ago, or a month from now, I'd probably pick differently.
And I can't seem to include a fixed blade, even though I want to. Five is just too few. Good God, John, take some more with you, lol!

My selection is based on users, which is a bit of a revelation to me.
I guess I want to take users to the desert island
Also action, walk 'n talk. These all excell in that.
And some are unique. I love the recurve blade in the AG; the navaja speaks for itself.
Lastly, I noticed a theme with the handle materials... I guess I like texture.

How did the drill arrive at five and not fifty five? Or the whole lot? I mean if you have to move house or endure renovations might as well move with the knives...;) Moving house does give scope for knife loss though which is why I loathe it.

Well, year or two back I thought about if I could only take THREE COMPACT knives with me on a month long walking tour . So I've regurgitated these from my knife crop together with a rationale of sorts. Restricted myself to smaller carry in the pocket not in a pack. 1 fixed blade small puukko in carbon, can be put in a coat pocket, easy to sharpen on a diamond rod. OK I could carry a full size Puukko on the belt but that can attract unwelcome attention...this small one can deal with fish gutting, fire stick preparation or general duties. 1 locking blade in stainless as an elegant carry for food/snack prep only. Sandvik is also easy to maintain and no rust problems. 1. multi blade, yes it logically could/should be a SAK Farmer but I don't actually carry SAKs they just happen to be with me :D I mean, I fancy more elegance:thumbsup: So a 3 blade Small Stockman in D2 for any other task I might encounter. If the D2 starts out sharp you can strop it ok on cardboard plus the small diamond rod. The other aspect was handle material: one in wood, one in horn, 1 in bone.

Obviously I could add 2 more knives, but er could I? Just 2 more favourites?? I'd end up bringing a shoe-box load of essentials or never leave the house:D I'll stick to three then, rebelliously...

Only choosing 5 knives would be pretty hard. Below is what I would chose if I had no other choice.

1- Case trapper. This knife is what got me into traditional knives.

2- Alox Farmer. Great all around knife. Really great choice for camping, hiking.

3- TC Barlow. What more is there to say.

4- Rosewood Lambsfoot. Awesome work knife. It has become one of my favorites.

5- Case Peanut. Great Sunday knife. It is also my vacation/travel knife, this knife has been up and down the East Coast.

If I had to choose five, these would probably be the ones:

L to R:
Case medium stockman
Rosewood lambsfoot
Case mini trapper
GEC ebony #15
Case trapper

(Could easily trade the mini trapper for a Victorinox Tinker, though; but I do prefer Delrin to Cellidor.)
Nice line up Vince! After seeing you choices I have put a mini trapper, yellow Delrin on my to buy list. :D

Those are nice choices John. You will definitely get to spend more time with a few really nice ones. If I had to grab five today, it would be these.

One of your knives is the Alox farmer you got from me in a trade. One of my knives is the TC I got from you. Pretty Cool JB!

I could have easily picked 7 knives or 10 knives, but 5 was what I came up with.
I carry a Lambsfoot every day, so I wanted to have two for some variety and these are currently my two favorites.
I usually carry a smaller multi-blade folder to work because of restrictions. So, I thought two of those would work too.
Lastly, I like a good solid Sodbuster around to do the dirty work, so I threw one of those in there as well.
Not too scientific and we will see how it goes with just five knives to choose from. Who knows, I may stick with it. ;)

Love that little Pukko, did you rehandle.

I could get by with a Case Peanut, 3 Case Stockman patterns (6318, 6347, 6375), and a full sized Case Trapper. And three SAKs - Mini Champ, Cadet, Pioneer X. Hard/Soft Arkansas stone, strop loaded with green Chromium oxide compound. I could live out the rest of my days with that set up.

Not counting kitchen knives. I'd need a good chef's knife and some water stones to keep it sharp.
