This is not a drill (traditional knives)

Been thinking about this, and going to have to revise my list (post #8). I simply took a pic of the knives currently on my night stand. Four of those five are very frequently carried, but the mini trapper was just there temporarily. It's a great knife, though. But if I really had to pick five from my collection, these would be the ones:

The trapper and GEC boys knife remain, but I would keep my stag barlow lambsfoot over my rosewood. I just carry the rosewood more. And though I carry my medium stockman a lot, I would rather keep my Schrade Scrimshaw stockman. It's a better size, and no blade rub. Trying to keep it pretty, though! And I GOTTA keep my Spanish navaja. It's my prettiest knife, made by a master craftsman. It's my Sunday go-to-meeting knife.

Now this list may change as my collection grows....

I am really happy to see some sort of Victorinox appear in many sets.

I thought this is going to be pretty straightforward. I had the essential trinity instantly:

1) Victorinox Classic SD - actually I don't even think of it as a knife, but rather a keychain and it goes with me virtually everywhere, even on plane trips when I only travel with hand luggage. I spent a night in the woods only with this and it worked ok. (I am planning to upgrade to Manager though.)
2) Victorinox Sportsman - my absolute favourite and would be the one to keep if forced to.
3) Mora Kansbol - carefree all-arounder if I choose to go on an overnighter.

I would be completely happy with these, but why not use the extra slots in my inventory?

4) No name multitool - the blade is an abomination of a knife but the pliers are very useful.
5) #66 Calf roper slim in ebony - in case I need to fondle with something sleek and classy.

Then it struck me - some are not traditionals!
Back to the drawing board then. I'd replace Kansbol either with Woodlore clone in camel bone or Woods knife in maple. I would throw inn Pipe Hawk instead of multitool for some variety.

Flip! Hawk is not a knife. Alright, alright, swap it with smallish fixblade Mora Classic 2/0. Uff, it turned out to be a tricky one!

If you will forgive me for wandering slightly off topic... Since we're talking about "minimum" knife needs in certain situations I thought this might be a good opportunity to tell this story.

Many years ago several of us from the plant staff were sent off to a training course lasting several days. As I recall, the weekend came along, or perhaps it was just an idle afternoon. Anyway, one of the other guys and I decided to just hole up in my hotel room and watch some TV. It's possible beer and chips may have been involved, I don't recall. We're watching this adventure show and the hero is being chased. He's driving his pickup truck and something happens -- gets stuck or a breakdown or whatever -- and he is forced to strike out on foot. Before doing so, though, he reaches in the glove compartment and pulls out a hunting knife and a compass.

Now, my co-worker starts to make great sport about this. "Who carries a hunting knife and a compass with him all the time?! HA HA HA!" :D:rolleyes:

Quietly I get up, open my suitcase, and pull out my Buck 110 and my compass...

The co-worker is astonished. "What do you have those for?!"

"Never know when you might need 'em!"

I think about this from time to time, especially when I find myself announcing that I need at least six knives with me for a short road trip lasting just a few days. ;)

If I had to whittle it down to (5) of my Case's (I'll upload a pic of my all star team later) ...

- Ratcliffe muskrat
- 63032
- 62087
- 6107w
- 6254

Here's a picture - I could actually get by with this lineup for 98% of my needs... and probably not wear any of them out

If we're talking end of days zombie apocalypse, I'd drop the mini trapper single blade for my Ontario survival knife...

Nice to see the clip point Navaja in your revised list, Vince :)
OK - I'll play too :)

Here is my select group:

View attachment 1183494

• 3 folders and 2 great and substantial worker fixed blades- big enough.

FOLDERS

• Tri blade folder a 2-3/8" Case 63090 Stockman - for the details and stealth carry.
• An A Wright & Son Ettrick in Buffalo Horn - this would be my dress carry ;)
• My 3" teak handled Spanish influenced Navy knife by ArtesaniaHerreros - this would be on my hip very day for all the stuff that needs cutting throughout the day - from bananas to cardboard, to flowers to rope.

FIXED

• The very excellent Henri Tikkanen made Karjalan Puukko - useful in so many applications, sharp as sharp needs to be and seemingly a natural extension of my hand.

• Finally - because I might need a 3/16" thick x 4.5" rugged, sharper than sharp needs to be, all purpose knife. My new very favorite. This a Chase Wilder forged Bushcraft with very beautifully done epoxied wrap handle and sheath by Brian Sargent. What a knife!! If there need be only 1 - this is it.

I have a box of tools of course that would come with me - so pliers and screwdrivers not needed attached to my knives. AND there are others knives and bigger blades in particular that I could miss not having but these 5 will have to serve and so they will

Look at this Chase Wilder/Brian Sargent again :) Nice huh?

Great group, Ray.
The CW is an all-business looking piece
Nice cord wrap and sheath

Like I said, it could have easily been six or seven knives...
I was packing up my Kids' collections and i saw my Wolf, so it made a quick swap with the #71.
And seeing everybody's choices I realized that I still needed my little fixed blade helpers, so they joined the crew too.

I know, three Lambsfoot knives isn't much variety? But I love them!

If only just 5 knives could be kept, then 2 would be super easy for me as they are truly EDC.

This is a fixed blade that just really "clicked" with me. Stupid tough, really simple, big enough and not to big. Plain enough that it doesn't raise many eyebrows(at least not in the rural area I live).
c1PMIR8.jpg

The other that is always on my belt is the GEC 44. A generous gift that is another one that "clicked". I seen these and thought they looked nice, but I probably wouldn't have bought one for myself. I thought they looked a bit uncomfortable to use,but I was wrong. Turns out I like it quite a bit. While its in the pic I might as well say an electrician type would be my third. I would probably choose the Case over my others simply for the hawkbill. I would have a great utility knife with a useful blade shape for a variety of tasks. My other tl29 types have spear mains and I have another choice with a spear already.
I7m32bw.jpg

Reckon that would be this ol'Ulster. To much utility not to have a scout/camp knife in there. And number 5 is the one I would keep above all others, simply for sentimental reasons
Klj62WT.jpg

I dont seem to have a pic of it alone saved any more, but the Case daddy barlow was my uncle's that passed away when I was 10. Its all I have of his, so it stays no matter what. Honestly a couple of these was hard, and my practical nature won out. But honestly I dont think I could give up my bullnose either and I would have to keep at least one LB7, and my Schrade PH1 and one of my jumbo trappers, and.....and....well y'all know how it is;)

I've seen them too on a local market stand for tourists on the city square. I didn't remember they were that cheap, but you get what you pay for. They were rather crudely and inconsistently finished knives: blade leaning backwards or not in line with handle, some handles ridiculously shaped/coloured etc. I wouldn't buy one without handling it first or better still, save some more dinari and go for Ahti.

And now with photos:

Well, I can only talk about my experience & I have no complaints over the F&F at all. Their website states 29€ for the small Zebra. I got it for 14€ in the supermarket and consider it fine, sheath is particularly good as well.

I agree that the sheaths are very nice. Priced at 14€ I would consider the knife to be a freebie and would not complain at all.

Okay, I'm playing, but I have to say I don't think your idea of "games" is very fun. Pain, suffering, sacrifice, hardship. You must be a distance runner :p. Kim is going to play later too because well, misery loves company and I asked her the question! My 5 are: 1) S&M Scout knife. Razor sharp spear blade, cap lifter, can opener, punch, and jeweled liners. Just about everything a man confined to 5 knives and being forced from his home could want. Plus, stag; 2) Kershaw 4932 Rhinelander. There are times at work (and at play) that I need a big sharp knife, and this big clip blade fills the bill. I waited 30 years to lay hands on another one and I'm not leaving it for an extended time period. Plus, stag; 3) Case Swayback Jack. Such a great little knife, and gives me a Wharncliffe blade and a pen. Plus, stag!; 4) Boker Double Tree Congress. Have fallen in love with this pattern, and now I've added not one but TWO sheepsfoot blades and a coping blade to my paltry 5 carries. Plus, stag; 5) Camillus-made Buffalo Horn Moore Maker 4/18" Trapper. Wouldn't feel complete without a Trapper along. And I couldn't go long without picking this particular knife up and fondling it. Plus,... oh, wait, not stag! Dangit, there goes my theme!

... and I like double bolsters - C cjtamu says

Nice, nice group!

Ray
Ha ha ha. I have some nice bare headed knives too, but with a cut of only 5..? Decisions had to be made. Swayback Jack beat out my bare headed Tribal Lock because that would have left me with two spear blades and no Wharny. Etc. Agonizing stuff. I’m glad I’m not the one actually living this nightmare!

Buck-Hunting-knives.jpg

Buck-121-and-Flounder-Filets.jpg

My bare bones minimal set would be these four (the Stockman could be a Case 18 or 32 just as easily); Buck 303 Cadet for EDC and cleaning small game, Buck 118 Personal for cleaning big game, Buck 121 Fisherman (older thin blade variation) for an easier time filleting fish and breasting wild turkey. Buck 110 Folding Hunter for general purpose heavy duty cutting and as a supplemental knife for hunting and fishing. Being a die hard KK (Knife-Knut) I’d hate to be in that situation - good luck on your remodel/repair. OH
