This one impresses me!

I'm a newbie here and sorry to ask a stupid question, but is this a current stock item? I didn't see it on the Buck website?

It showed up in the 2009 catalog as being available August 1st. They seem to have been delayed and are just now hitting the market. I don't believe they ever showed up on the web site.

Dave I would be interested in top (open) and bottom (closed) views of the knife.

Not great, but here they are.

Hi PBD,

I have a question for you. Dave can you give us your thoughts on the blade deployment of this knife as compared to a Sirus or Tempest.

Let me state that another fellow had post in another thread this knife was harder to get the blade into action than a Sirus or Tempest. It may sound funny but that other guys comment made me not want to get this knife. It was one of the knives in the 09 catalog I had been waiting all year for.

Your thoughts will be of great interest to me.

Here's my thoughts. I have all three knives right here with me and in my opinion, the Paradigm is the easiest to deploy. With the Sirus and Tempest, you have to hook the lock with your finger nail and pull it back. It takes a pretty good pull and puts quite a bit of strain on my nail. With the Paradigm, a simple push with my thumb releases the lock (much easier), after that deployment is the same. The Paradigm has a little larger and grooved deployment "tab" for lack of a better term and seems slightly easier to use. If you keep your thumb out of the way, the moveable bolster/lock snaps back into place when the blade snaps open.

So, for what it's worth, I like the system on the Paradigm the best. I like it so well, that I just ordered the Avid version to give to a friend.

Another note. A year or so ago, I gave a lady I knew a Sirus and she didn't like it because she was afraid she'd break a nail releasing the lock in order to get the blade to open.

I couldn't find the thread you referred to. Could you post a link to it? I did find this quote from Larry Oden about it.

I handled a prototype at the Blade Show. I was most interested to discover if the knife was slick to operate. By that, I mean to say I wanted to ascertain if it would take too much effort and dexterity to operate. I was pleased that it did operate smoothly and that the effort was minimal. I was also told that Buck was still "tweaking" it because they wanted it to be even slicker than the prototype. CJ Buck indicated that they had made progress in this attempt and that he was certain the production models would be even better than the prototype."

on the family resemblance that's what i was talking about earlier how it looks like an upscale vantage to me since i prefer the more taditional bolsters instead of all black.

appreciate the info on how it operates. i like my sirus but swapped to the vantage since i could never know if the safety was still off or had engaged itself when carried and fumbling with disengaging if it didnt open took longer then just using the vantage. if the safety and flipper position were swapped and could do it in one motion that'd be great.

but this system i think is one to try since you know what to do each time/everytime and it doesnt create additional steps or change in hand position. good info, thanks

No coincidence on the family resemblance. We originally developed the Paradigm as the Pro-level of the Vantage family. It was unique enough that we decided to make a Vantage in S30V and G10 for the Pro-level.

that's an example of different strokes for different folks...that vantage is the only knife i've been able to thumb open easily! i've tried all the other brands and finally resigned to flippers as the only way for me. the sirus was my first assist knife and only because it had a flipper backup, although it definately works with the thumb too. the vantage was chosen after being frustrated with the safety not staying off on my sirus since it had a flipper. but surprise surprise that vantage avid jumps open with my thumb too, first knife that's worked well for me with the thumb stud/cutout. my pro is a little more difficult but hoping with use it'll smooth out.

I can open the Vantage, etc., by starting it with my thumb and then flipping it the rest of the way, but it's just easier for me to use the ASAP system. Age or lack of manual dexterity?? Could be a little of both.:(

i'm with ya there, not so much age with me but years of drumming have def limited the dexterity. i'm just thrilled Buck is putting the flippers on em too which i still prefer. and add in asap with it and just ideal for me for that style of knife

I "NEED" a Vantage with that Blue/Black G-10! :thumbup:Very nice looking. The only thing better would be Black/Green G-10.:D

I do more lurking then posting lately. But this is an iteresting looking knife. I might have to look for one.

Is this 337 assist? Yep; see the resemblence and they're really nice! Buck sure seems to be coming on strong now!
