This woman could no doubt show us all a thing or two !

Harsh. You can't even drop out of society without a bunch of faceless posters commenting on your looks. I wonder if a homely man doing the same thing would draw the same ire.

It was just a little jocular humour. Here, comment on my old dog face, I could care less.

I thought that was a man....

Interesting story. I'm impressed by that house for sure! Definitely takes some dedication to live like that. I prefer just a weekend away, but to each his own I suppose. Erm...make that her own I guess.

@upnorth: whew, that's a mug only a mother could love! Hahaha just pokin a little fun!

I just want to know one thing; where did they get the money for the community in the woods, and how do they maintain it? I mean, there's got to be taxes on the land, store bought materials and groceries, and other expenditures. Come on, this is the 21st century, and I just don't believe that they are living independent of a technological society without help. I can't help but suspect that this is a case of well heeled liberals that had a good bank account, taking a powder from the world.

We know nothing about her except her looks. She's not Jennifer Anniston, but what did you expect? She could be a cranky old ----, but she could also be a wonderful person. She obviously knows a great deal about living that way, and I agree with Pitdog that she could show us all something. Most of us can't get along without TV, smartphones, computers, and convenience stores (not to mention McDonalds). Does a person in her lifestyle threaten us? Perhaps TV has taught us that everyone should look like they just stepped out of a catalog or the Victoria's Secrets video.

That's usually the case. Dick Proenneke had lots of help, and he never hid that fact. I suspect the level of independence that most people try to portray is just plain fantasy.

If she's enjoying her life, then well and good, and I agree with Pit, she could probably teach us some things. However, I'll believe it more when she comes down with appendicitis or cancer and chooses death over modern medicine.

You could read the story at the link.
It's explained in there

I suspect it doesn't get that cold there.

I don't have a television or smartphone. I don't frequent convenience stores and our town just got it's first McDonalds. I've been there several times because my daughter is the manager and I was the 5th customer at the grand opening so I got a free Big Mac a week for a year. I own several computers but I lived more than four decades without them. She does mention take out pizza and chocolate bars. The house her husband built has modern glass windows and she uses modern ceramic and metal containers. She and her exhusband both have university degrees. He left "Moonflower" and the commune a few years back but still owns the land and rents it to the other people in the commune. Article doesn't say what their grown children do, but they are not there either. You might be interested in the genesis of some of the West Coast communes of the sixties. An interesting experiment in small scale socialism.

makes me think of the Oneida commune in NY, i think the silverware company that they founded is in existence to this day.

I guess I could just run to the wiki, but I seem to remember learning that the Oneida community had unconventional sexual practices. Older women initiating the teenaged males and the older men showing the young girls how to have sex. Yeah and then they made plates.

Give her credit for walking the walk even if you may not agree with her reasons or politics. Today you have to have some money even if you are off the grid.

I'm all for people living a simple life as long as they are honest with people, and themselves.

Like a lot of hippies, she lives some simple, but relies on the modern world for a lot of her utensils and medicines. So, basically, she's saying that she cannot or will not get along without the modern world.

A bud of mine from high school loved to smoke dope and live in his commune. He was real proud of how him and his were able to drop out of the "hate-filled" modern world and tune in to the natural rhythms of mother nature...... except that every single thing in their commune was made in modern society. When I asked him about the dichotomy, he didn't have any answers. Making third-world sandals out of truck tires is nice, but how about making sandals out of brain-tanned deer hides like primitive man did? Otherwise, you are relying on modern society. Stone tools? Basic blacksmithing for tools around the commune? Nada.

Really, of the dozen or so in that commune, nobody had any real practical skills other than basic gardening with a heavy emphasis on marijuana cultivation.... and they loved the free clinic in town.

Pretty cool post Pit. I would love to live like that for awhile. Too bad some of the people are focused on her looks and not the meaning of the story.

Aside from the Hobbit association the roof of her hut affords I find nothing special here. She's got a bit more structure than most most crusty camps because she's doing a bit of gardening and has the goats and chickens, but she is well short of even a very small smallholding. The only thing that truly sets her apart from many of the others in that area is that she is legally allowed to be there. I have been to others that are much more impressive although illegal, and some have been up for years and years. Look up some of the road protester ones and you can find ones with treehouses and underground bunkers dug in too. I do skim the Mail every so often but it isn't the most illuminated bunch of journalists. This is just a cheap Hobbit story because of the movie.

How true, I imagine she could really care less though what others think of her looks, she is the real deal!

You, you, ... old dog, you! :D I'm considerably uglier, and am the first to admit it.

:D Actually I kind of regret my belligerent stance. I felt bad about were this thread was heading, and I contributed to it. My ego was bigger than my willingness to be honest. Being honest......... I felt uncomfortable about what I said about this lady, and I apologize for it.
