Thoughts on a Contego?

I just got the Knifeworks 810-1401 Contego with M390 steel and absolutely love it! It now ranks dead even with my 581 as my main EDC. The Rift is an awesome knife in its own right but this Contego is a beast on a whole nother level its HUGE!

Some cheap scales on one of my Contego's. I'm only using them until Keyman has the time to hook me up. For how big the knife is I think it carries small. I'm on vacation now and my brother in law carries a mini-grip fpr his EDC. He loves my Contego, but he thought it was too big to carry. After letting him carry mine for a couple of days he just ordered an M390 from Knifeworks.

That looks good in CF! How much weight reduction did you see switching from the G10?

Wow! It looks very nice. Hand made, or purchased from 3rd party?

MFL

Hand made, but I have no clue who actually made them. I got them off ebay from a guy who had someone make them. The pics on ebay weren't great, but the sale price was cheap so I bought them. They look great from a distance, but the holes around the axis lock are buggered up a bit. The axis lock hole one the other side is worse. If it wasn't for the holes around the axis lock being a little messy I would keep the scales. Once I get a set from Keyman I'll probably sell these CF scales.

Hi all. Brand new to this forum but I thought I'd share my thoughts. I took delivery of a Black PE Contego on Saturday, it is my first Benchmade having wanted one for a while. I have large hands and find the shape of the handle extremely positive and comfortable. I also like the aggressive jimping on the scales and liners which I find reassuringly tactile and pleasant to grip. Carrying out a few tasks the blade is an excellent slicer and very usable as expected.

I've EDC'd this all weekend, it rode in my Hagloff trousers as well and innocuous as anything else I've got so no complaints there at all. I shot F-class yesterday and in the prone didn't even notice it there. I can see this being my main user where suitable to carry here in the UK, which as I'm on call for Mountain Rescue will be often. A great introduction to Benchmade!

I am always baffled by responses that a knife is too heavy when it is literally a matter of ounces.

It's like a shoe being "only" 0.5" too short for your foot. Once you stray from the comfort zone even just a little bit, whether its a shoe or a knife, it sorta ruins the fun.

Yea, everyone has their idea of what knife fits their needs. I ended up not going with the Contego. Although I love the blade shape and I love both M4 and M394 I just can't get down with the excessive jimping and weight. It's not what I prefer in a folder.

Smaller scales = more hard core jimping.
A little over-sized scales = a little less aggressive jimping.
These were done for a customer that wanted just that...a little less aggressive jimping.

That's lovely.

Not really like a shoe. A shoe has set parameters, or capacity, of what it will fit on. Just like how one caliber bullet will not fit properly in another calibers chamber. I just could never understand how a knife selection is discarded due to a weight difference of an ounce or three. To be honest for me those small differences in weight are not even noticeable. But yes I do agree that getting out of your comfort zone is not any fun. Perhaps my comfort zone is more flexible than some. But as many say, to each his own is the bottom line. It's all good in the long run.

I just bought one from the exchange last night. It was the KW exclusive, the 810-1401. Blue/black G10 scales with M390 steel. Looking forward to gteting it in. This will be the first BM that I have purchased since 6/13 dues to BM's pricing change so kind of excited to get it in. :)

Beautiful knife, great steel. Of course, I don't know much about the ergos yet as this will be my first Contego.

My 810-1401 was from the first batch, it is also the mostly blue (blue/black not black/blue) style and is a beautiful knife. The scales are smoother than expected and feel great. Most owners of the standard 810 say the jimping is less aggressive on the 810-1401 than on the early production 810s, personally I'd like to see it even less aggressive but it's not bad as it is. It was received with a sharp edge, even edge grind, centered blade, and no other defects of any kind - the M390 blade steel is the icing on the cake, as is the absent glass breaker - although some would disagree with that. For the few dollars more it costs over the standard 810 it has to be one of the best Benchmade deals in a long time for a person that wants a large, heavy-duty folder.

Let us know your impressions after receiving it.

Will do. On another note, looking forward to seeing what Mickey & Co. decide to do tonight. :D

The picture that the seller posted in the thread showed this one to be more blue than black also. And, IMHO, that is a good thing. I much prefer the blue/black colors.

When I get it in (early next week, most likely). I'll try to post some pics and some comments.

Thanks, guys. :)

Still loving the huge chunk of M390, steel and blue/black G10 that is my beastly Knifeworks 810. Looking forward to see what Keyman comes up with for scales.

I just received the 810-1401 from KW. Fabulous knife (not to mention the great communication and fast shipping). If anyone is on the fence about getting a Contego, you will not be disappointed.
