Thoughts on Paperstone?

I agree that it looks good.

Pretty much a winning combination for most people.

I can see why they're popular. Me, I don't care about the weight. Heavy, to me, means stronger.....so I just don't have a need for the lightweights. Clearly, many people do though.

:)

Side note: Trees seen as a renewable resource is largely a myth, unless you can find a way to make useful stuff out of 2"-diameter saplings. ;)

(I like Buck knives.)

Yeah, and I don't think the components of brass are being "grown" anymore either. ;)

I just did a search for paperstone. Seems the other big use for it is to make cutting boards. Also, on a certain auction site there are a set of knife handle blanks, I think 12in long. If you wanted to do an abuse test beating those on something till your hand hurt could be a good test.

Sadly, I had forgotten that I had at least 3 paperstone Bucks. I need to also look for a Vantage now in that I think.

Best way to smooth out the finish of the PaperStone handles on a Vantage?

I have PaperStone 112 and 110 EcoLites, and the semi-glossy finish is perfect for me.

The finish on the Vantage handles is a little too rough.

What would smooth out that finish? Are we talking a simple sanding job? Power tools? Blowtorch and hammer?

I'm going to venture a guess, and say that it probably behaves much like Micarta, in which case some fine sandpaper would do just right. Depending on how smooth you want it, you could even use some wet/dry and take it up to a shine.

I like being able to soak'em in the sink or blast'em with whatever solvent is handy.
Even carb cleaner doesn't seem to phase the stuff.
Wish they'd HURRY UP and do the 55.

+1

This is exactly what I *cannot* do with my Opinels. Nice enough EDC knives and tougher than you might imagine. But, fluids and stuff don't mix well with the handles.

I just did a little checking and I was surprised a bit at what I discovered. I weighed three of the new Odyssey models that are on the web special page. Two of them have the ThermoPlastic rubber handles and the third has Paperstone handles. Turns out that the one with Paperstone handles is heavier than the other two. Not by much and that difference may be the shield inlet into the handle, but it can't weigh much so there doesn't seem to be a weight advantage with that knife at least.

My plastic 482 is much lighter than an ecolite 112. Feels "cheaper" too. No liner is part of that. The ecolite is still a lot lighter than a ranger though.

I just reviewed this thread and read all the contributions. I have been avoiding "Paperstone" just because of the name. I guess I'll have to give one a try. I hope that they have a little more heft then a Bucklite. I like a little weight in my sheath, at least so I can tell there is a knife in it. :)

I must say that my Ecolite 110 is much more substantial feeling than my 426 without being much heavier all in all I'm sold on the stuff. also wouldn't mind picking up a red Ecolite to go with my green one.

Not much I can really add to this thread but I won't let that stop me .;) I recieved a green Paperstone 110 in trade just a few days ago . So far I am very impressed with it and think it would be equally at home at deer camp or on a nature hike . Just an all around great product in my humble opinion .

while on a trip recently up to New Hampshire I picked one up (Ranger) at a local Hardware store to have while I was in state...Immediately fell in love with it!
Left it with my brother to mail back to me...sure hope I see that one again...Got home and ordered three more from the Web Specials page...Very solid feeling knife,
slim enough and light enough for pocket carry...Am hoping to knock the blade out of one or two and put in some 442 Drop point blades...I think that this will be a real winner combo for a Mod...:)

Among my other Buck woes, one is a 110 Ecolite. Vertical lockup is terrible. Sent it in, was told "that's just the way the paperstone models are".
