Thoughts on SOG?

Hey guys,

I have had a Twitch II for a while and I like it allot. It is sleek, slim, light and is made of decent steel. I also like the spring assist opening...

I am interested in trying some other blades from SOG but many just look too flashy for my tastes. The Trident for example is a little too "tacticool" for me. Any recommendations on another SOG that is more low key like the Twitch II?

BTW I just made this video as a Tribute to the Twitch II. Please take a look at it:

Get one.
I had an F2 and sold it and always missed that folder. I just got another and this one stays. SOG's quality is outstanding!

I had a SOG Spec Elite I and sold it because the finger groove was very uncomfortable. I like the fast and quiet opening, but the handle had a cheap feeling to it, I don't know why.

I have a sog tac, the auto one and wasn't impressed with it at all. I think sogs fixed blades are fine, but I'll never buy one of their folders again.

The holy trinity of low key SOGs are the Flash I, Twitch II and Blink. I love them all. In a cool, bro kind of way of course.

If you want to move up the food chain a little, there are the Flash II and Aegis.

There is also a mini Aegis, which I also own. Its situated between the Twitch II/Flash I/Blink and the larger Flash II and Aegis. Every one of these is an assisted opener, btw.

Its strange that so many report the cheap feeling with there other blades. My Twitch II is solid. It's not my #1 favorite or anything but it is pretty nice.

Any other suggestions?

I'm interested in the Flash II, how is that funky lock thing working for you?

If you are talking about the blade lock that is situated in the semi circular cutout in the scales, its just a normal lock somewhat like you would find on a Benchmade 710 or Spyderco Manix 2 [though the SOG's locks are completely different internally and are not nearly as precise]. The "safety", shown on the right end of the knives above, is just something I ignore. Some folks will glue them open so they never accidentally engage. I just ignore them and they are never an issue.

I love the Flash II, btw. It is probably my favorite of all those shown. But it is a full sized knife with a 3.5" blade, so it won't fly under the radar as much as the smaller SOGs.

I wouldnt say mine feels cheep at first. Just little details. When closed the blade doesnt sit far enough into the handle. I've stuck myself on the tip with it fully closed twice now. The stop pin cant seem to handle the blade slamming into it. So the blade has a groove where it contacts the stop pin creating quite a lot of vertical blade play. Disassembling it is a huge pain as you cant hold the piece the screw threads into. Other than these I like it a lot. But it simply seems like it isn't built to last while handling it's own spring power.

i really want the aegis, but from what i know the customer service is great. i had to go through them a few times and they were awesome!

I think some of them are ok like the twitch series, tooth lock, vulcans,x-ray etc., that kind of stuff. Along with a few of the fixed blades. But some of the folders are lacking in my opinion. Trident is the big one. I have family and friends that have 4 different variations of it. Blade play, up and down, left and right. The handles themselves have alot of flex to them. Aegis wasn't as bad but not great. I say if you want one, handle it first.

I hate the tri-fold shovel! What a piece of garbage that is. My 10 year old destroyed it in less than 2 minutes.

I had a Twitch 2--nice knife, but too small for me.

We had an old Seal Pup in our tool bag on the tank. We used it for everything from MREs to Concertina wire and it never chipped. It wasn't an "issued" item, but we used the heck out of it.

BTW I just made this video as a Tribute to the Twitch II.

Nice video, funky music and sick edge.

Ignore the SOG haters, btw. Michelangelo, Stradivari and Powernoodle weren't fully appreciated in their time either.

Low end steel? Rampant blade play? Spotty fit and finish? Yeah...I think I'll pass...

You're much better off going with a kershaw or Chinese made spyderco in this price range.

I haven't bought a SOG in over 10 years, but I think some of their fixed blades are good. I like the ones with solid Zytel handles better than some companies' comparable offerings with Kraton handles. I think the plain-edge SOG Force looks decent. I don't care for their folders.

The Flash I is my favorite of my SOGs. It practically disappears in the pocket and works well as a small discrete EDC folder. I like the Twitch II as well, but I just never carried that one much. The flipper on that one felt weird to me for some reason. The Aegis is pretty nice as well (one of my co-workers EDC's one). I like the handle on that more than the Flash II. The one larger finger groove is more comfortable than the double grooves on the Flash series.

I own various spyderco, chris reeve knives, and other high quality ones and was suprised the enjoyment which came from using and carrying my Twitch 2. The finish holds up great and the edge has been pretty decent as well. One thing the SOG's have going for them is the sweet assisted opening which is quite enjoyable. I haven't tried other ones but been eyeing the Flash 2. It would be cool if SOG stepped it up a notch and put in slightly better materials for blade and handles even if it meant a higher price point. Nice Vid too btw.
