Thoughts on SOG?

I too have the Vulcan and think it a great knife. Smoothest opening folder I own. The thick VG-10 blade takes a great edge. Also the handle to blade ratio is very impressive. It's like they stuffed as much blade into the handle that could fit. I like it very much.

I'm not crazy about all Sog folders. They get a lot of criticism and much of it deserved. Mainly the lower end ones but they have a few gems here and there. The Elite series are very well made strong knives. The steel is decent and the locks strong and can handle a lot of hard use. As mentioned the Vulcan and X-ray as well. Pretty much all the Arc lock models I have are well made strong knives.

I can't say all Sog knives are great but they do have some good ones...

I had the large Vulcan Tanto until recently. It was a good knife, well built, no blade play, good fit and finish, very sharp, deep pocket clip. I liked the knife, but I never loved it. The clip, while it was deep carry, had a lot of side to side movement and I didn't love that. The handle is also very wide and didn't carry as well. The flipper also wouldn't open the blade all the way without a very strong wrist flick to accompany it. Again, the knife was perfect in every way, I just didn't love the design in use.

I did receive a lot of compliments from non-knife people on the knife because it looked awesome. Ended up selling it very cheap to a police officer near me. He was stoked to receive the knife and said it was his new duty knife... so that made me happy to see it go to loving/capable hands.

Anybody try a toothlock? I always wanted to try it but never could handle one so I passed.

Good blades, bad handles, and NIB bladeplay throughout their entire line. I can't stand SOGs.

I bought and returned a Vulcan TiNi recently. The washers were too large and interfered with the Arc Lock fully locking, which was absolutely ridiculous. I contacted SOG on the issue and I still haven't received a response. Also the handle felt awful and the pocket clip was well below my personal par. I was extremely dissatisfied except for the VG-10 blade which was extremely sharp and had a great profile, but did not make up for the other issues. I'd rather have an average knife that is built responsibly rather than a knife where I am paying for brand name entirely and no quality control.

Sogzilla's ( Spyderco knock-offs , AFAIC) actually make good work beaters. The Seal Pup series , Northwest Ranger , and Sog Force ( now made only in plain edge ,Thank you) are very good fixed blades. Anything else from Sog I have stayed away from , either QC issues , price ,or both.
