Thoughts on SOG?

not that this says anything about the quality of the folding knives per se, but I have an SOG multitool that I was issued by my supply sergeant... and I have beaten the ever loving FUCK out of it... and have yet to have a hint of an issue with it.

I've used it as a hammer, hit it with a hammer, hit foldouts with a hammer to get nails in corners, pried, pulled, bashed, cut, chiseled, flipped it around like a balisong, sawed chunks of an entertainment center out, cut nails with the wire cutter (yes, nails) and done everything I can go generally use and abuse it and it still functions flawlessly.

If their folders are made half as well as this thing seems to be, IMO it would be a plenty good knife.

I have heard many people say they love the SOG Flash II and am happy theirs are working well. I bought 2, one for my younger brother and one for myself. We both have terrible blade play, so much that I will not carry it.
I love the deep carry pocket clip, but with a blade that is so loose I can't bring myself to use it.
I have written SOG and they said that all assisted opening knives have some blade play. Maybe all SOG assisted knives do, but all my Kershaws do not.
Am I the only one who has experienced this in the Flash II?

For the SOGs with FRN handles, I think the horizontal play is more attributed to the FRN flexing than the blade actually being misaligned. I have to apply a bit of force to get blade movement. I see the same thing with my Spydercos with FRN handles (Ladybug, Dragonfly, Delica, Endura). There isn't as much flex on the Delica and Endura, possibly because of the metal liners, but you definitely have horizontal movement if you apply a bit of force.

If you are talking about the blade lock that is situated in the semi circular cutout in the scales, its just a normal lock somewhat like you would find on a Benchmade 710 or Spyderco Manix 2 [though the SOG's locks are completely different internally and are not nearly as precise]. The "safety", shown on the right end of the knives above, is just something I ignore. Some folks will glue them open so they never accidentally engage. I just ignore them and they are never an issue.

I love the Flash II, btw. It is probably my favorite of all those shown. But it is a full sized knife with a 3.5" blade, so it won't fly under the radar as much as the smaller SOGs.

I will keep that in mind... I love the Benchmade line up and I have the Manix so that is cool. I will have to find one and check it out.

Nice video, funky music and sick edge.

Ignore the SOG haters, btw. Michelangelo, Stradivari and Powernoodle weren't fully appreciated in their time either.

Thanks for the comment on my video.

I take all reviews of products with a grain of salt but I have seen the suckiness of the Trident in person so the opinions help. Knife opinions are just like gun opinions, whether or not it is the greatest gun/knife often depends on what the person has whetted them selves to or grown up with.

Low end steel? Rampant blade play? Spotty fit and finish? Yeah...I think I'll pass...

You're much better off going with a kershaw or Chinese made spyderco in this price range.

I have TONS of stuff. The reasons I'm asking about SOG is because the only one I've owned is this Twitch and it is pretty sweet for a small blade so I figured I would see what else they have to offer.... The opinions expressed in this thread are quickly pushing me away from the idea...

What model? Maybe I'll just buy that instead of a SOG blade. My current multi-tool is a surprisingly disappointing letherman....

I have a Visionary II and have really mixed feelings about it.

It's VERY smooth, but also a bit tight. If I losen it any more, there's a bit of blade play. I'll probably just have to work it in.
The handle also feels a bit on the 'cheap' side.

All in all it's a decent knife, and I think worth the price I paid for it ($47).

I love my Vulcan. It is my most constant EDC. It is solid, thick(.16) Super steel, and just the right size. No problems with it.

Another vote for a Vulcan here. Solid piece all the way around. If it's too big check out the little brother; mini Vulcan.

See that is what I am talking about, the Vulcan looks like a good blade but it is just a little to fantastical in my opinion. It's like it is working really hard to be cool... Maybe it's just me.

How is it too cool?simple clip point blade, simple plain black handle that grips, and a flipper....man I love flippers. Sounds like you want a tradional. Look at Queen mountain man lock back-Amber bone and D2.

This is what your talking about right? ---> http://sogknives.com/store/VL-01.html

The design on the grip, the odd cut outs at the beginning of the blade, the big shiny "SOG" advertisement hanging out of its butt..... It's just a little "tacticool" to me.

I'm not looking for traditional, I like a lot of kershaw products and benchmade stuff, ehh I dunno... I guess it's not really that bad the more I look at it.

Another +1 for the SOG vulcan. I loved my first one so much that I ordered another for my father for his birthday and he loves it as well. There is absolutely no blade play and that arc lock is supposed to hold up to more than a thousand pounds of pressure. Plus the vg10 steel is excellent in my opinion for an edc knife. Holds a razor edge well and is fairly difficult to chip if you use your knife to chip away at painted metal like my father does.
