Thoughts on the "Salt" series

Up until very recently I had a Salt 1 (left it in my car and it was stolen during a visit to the mechanic). I used it as a dive knife and my EDC when working in the tropics. Last year I spent 10 weeks as a cameraman on an adventure cooking show, did the underwater photography as well as the regular stuff. The Salt held up beautifully, basically looked like new up until I lost it. Got to get a new one before my next trip.

I like them most because they are built on the "old chassi" the H1 is just icing on the cake

Agreed - I much prefer the volcano pattern on the FRN and the lack of steel liners.

On the downside - I have lost a total of two Salt's because the clip doesn't have the same level of tension as some of Spyderco's recent offerings. One just went missing  one day during a car drive. I think it got caught on the seat belt and fell out at some point. Spent an hour tearing the car apart to find it to no avail. A strong beach wave took the other one (with hand brushed and anodized titanium pocket clip - it took me a long time to get that just right ).

The larger carbonitride coated Pacific Salt is on the DO WANT list

So far the knife is larger than I expected. Its pretty thin though so It doesnt bother me in the pocket. Ive only ha it about 12 hours.... we will see. So far im happy. Now to let the marsh decide.

I'm a big fan of the salt fixed blades. I love my rock and my aqua salts. I haven't played much with the folders.

Keep us posted about its progress. I would love to hear how it stands up in a weeks or months time.

I will let you guys know, we haven't done much working the last couple days, it's gotten used a couple times. Stayed wet (dirty salt water) for 2 days and still looks brand new... Ill post some pics of I can figure this uploading crap out

H-1 and the Salt series is the single best knife you can buy for your usage in a marsh or other wet environment. I have a Tasman salt that has been with me to the Atlantic 3 times, been soaked in water both fresh and salt and has yet to need anything but sharpening. If I may ask, what model did you get?

Got the Pacific with the coated blade, its the biggest one, its quite large for my taste but I'm quickly getting used to it. It's the old Endura model chassis with no metal liners and the volcano style grip

On occassion ill have to cut a slit in a lime with my ladybug H1 hawkbill. I've had a week pass with actual lime rind just clinging to the blade- washed it off with just water in the sink and it looked like the day I bought it. H1 is a beautiful thing

I live on the Gulf coast and my Pacific Salt is used almost daily when I bike ride. I also like to take it on vacation so I don't have to to worry about bringing cleaning supplies. The humidity inside an occupied car is quite high.

Well guys... I am very surprised with this steel. It hasn't corroded or rusted in the slightest. It has also held an edge like a champ. Thank you Spyderco and thank you all those that have input. I will own a Salt series knife forever.

H1 is a fantastic steel (or alloy, I guess that's the right term?). It holds up decently well, is incredibly easy to sharpen, and is completely rust proof. The Salt series are really incredible for their intended purpose. A Salt was my first of many Spydercos, it was the one that got me hooked.

Congrats on finding the right knife for you!

H-1 will not rust. I've used my Pacific Salt and my TUSA H-1 dive knife for diving in the pacific ocean and there's not a spot of rust. I've had other stainless steel dive knives develop rust after only 4 hours in the ocean while still in the water.

I'll echo what others have said already. H1 is very easy to sharpen. I had my Pacific Salt attached to my PFD while kayaking the salty sea and never rinsed it once the entire summer
Can't find a spot of rust on it anywhere. The Salt series:thumbup:

Isn't H1 technically a "ceramic" ?

It's a snap to touch up, gets super sharp without much effort, and work-hardens the edge when used. Can't go wrong with a Salt!

No not a ceramic. A Nitrogen containing alloy.

There is a thread on Spyderco forum; Questions about H1 with some good technical discussion.

My favorite Spydercos are Salts. I own several, but my all-around favorite is the PE Pacific Salt. Others I use a lot include the SE Tasman, SE Salt 1, SE Spyderhawk Salt, and SE Dragonfly.

Lately, the knives I've been carrying and using every day are the Pacific and Salt 1 together. I've had the Pacific in the ocean, and all it needed was rinsing to get the grit out afterwards. In particular, I've been using the Pacific for years, and no rust anywhere.
