What is the best steel? I've been on the forums for less than a year and it seems to change.

Who is the best knife maker/production/ custom? Always nice to hear about the up and coming and those who are improving.

Serrated versus plain? I don't know but there might be someone new who has a good answer.

BTTT? Who would imagine there is a topic on this.

What knife can I carry on an airplane or in L.A.? A new law everyday.

What is the best knife? Hopefully the one made tomorrow.

If you want to ask it go ahead. There might be someone new to the forums who has a insightful answer or there might be new information. If you tell someone to do a search. Why not provide the exact link so they can go to the best one. I also like to offer an opinion, if your going to waist the time telling someone to do a search why not type in your opinion to there answer.

Let’s not forget the all time favorites:
"do you carry more then one?" Duh!
Fixed blade Vs. Folder in the city/woods/desert/island...
And the one gathering more responses then any:
"which knife are you carrying today?"

This last one falls into the known category of: WTFC.

Me thinks that many of the posts are there just so that the poster can see his or her name pasted up on a page for all the world to see. People live in relative anonymity and some need to be recognized in some small way, especially if they are younger. This is still a very large and mysterious world, even if they fain sophistication they need a reassurance that they can and will be given attention by their elders; and each other. Hence all the prosaic questions......
Lighten up, they just want to participate.

Post Script: I really like the deep discussions about different steels that you more mature fellas have around here.

Dan K, you just made one of my favorite posts: the psychological interpretation.

Hey Everyone,
You all posted the best of the questions.
Remember everyone was a "newbie" at one time or another

Hey, I am a newbie. I spent three days reading old posts (all the way back to 1998 in some cases) Just to get up to speed. I think that if the newbie is serious and really wants to learn he or she will do the same thing. I do like seeing my name posted though

. And I dont take any offense to this thread. Sometimes the recent threads on the same subject don't answer the same specific question.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Just want to make a clarification here. This post was not intended as a flame against recurring topics or newbies. It's hopefully a light-hearted look back. I'm as guilty as everyone else of starting and particpating in recurring threads, I know I've told people to "buy both" and more than once I've used the power of psychology to influence naysayers.

And btw, what is the best chopping knife?

These threads that keep recurring are really a double edge sword. On the one hand topics can tend to get discussed to death, on the other, new and useful information sometimes finds it way into the post.

The search function seems a little illusive for some reason, perhaps a global search would help.

My recent favorite is "stiff firing LCC DA", and my all time favorite (and I do mean favorite) is the "What does it have in it's pocketses" ala JKM.

I understood the post, I just thought it might be misunderstood, as I apparently did.

Excellent response, cobb. I'm a knife newbie also, and I joined this forum just so I could acquire some of that "old information that is boring and irritating" to the "seasoned" knife collectors. I'm a writer and a semi-pro photographer and friends always come to me with basic technical questions that I've heard, and answered, a thousand times before. And you know what, I'll be happy to answer them a thousand times again. If I can turn someone else on to a subject that interests me, I will ALWAYS be happy to share what little knowledge I possess.

And who can tire of:

"Why does wife keep seperate laundry basket for my undershorts?"

or,

"Name that smell..."

Ah, to be a newbie again.

Although these same questions keep getting asked over and over again, and there are some that will just pass them by when they come up again. Luckily there is always someone who will answer them in an inteligent way, but a lot of these questions have no definitive answer which is why they continue to work so well as an introductory post from a FNG.

Nobody has mentioned my favorite question yet, "Is that a Sifu in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?"

I grit my teeth when I see the above posts appear again and again.

However, I think it is more a matter of HOW the post is presented. If a poster shows (s)he has done some homework, but is unsure of the answer, or is specifically looking for new information (and the last time the subject posted was not last week), then I believe that the post is justified.

When I see a post that asks something like: 'Which steel would be best, and why, in a 3" folder; ATS-34, S5, CPM440V, Nokia S345Xty, or NipponX467?'

Needless to say, I have never heard of some of these steels, and have to look up the elemental composition to even have a clue. In addition, the question is basically unanswerable, as which is 'best' is highly subjective.

When I was a newbie, not that many years ago, I also liked to see my name on a thread. Somewhere near the top, hopefully with a substantive answer, which I usually got from doing some research. It was quite a while before I dared post my first new thread.

The threads in which a newbie asks a question and the wise old mother hens come in to set them straight.

Oh, wait isn't that almost every thread around here?
