As I often do, I love going through my books on modern custom
knives where, among the more than 1,400 pages, there are some
illustrations that still hold me fascinated for long moments.
One of these is the opening illustration to Steve R. Johnson's
section in my second book:
"Art and Design in Modern Custom Fixed-Blade Knives" (2005).

What is even more amazing about this page is the fact that
one reaches it after turning 8 pages of John Jensen's section,
that is packed with the most amazing fantasy knife art on the planet....

Can you imagine the wondrous switch that happens once I turn over
to this page?

Those of you who have the book, try it and see for yourselves....

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

I don't really like the wilderness design. But that (boot ?) fighter and that small utility... Yes ! Antother thread is about oldies goldies. This is a good example of old designs with modern fit and finish.

One thing you are completely right, Patrick, the fit and finish
of all three knives is as close to perfection as it gets....

Here are the descriptions of SRJ's three knives made for the
New York ECCKS Show of 2004:

From the left:
"Loveless-style Boot Knife",
5 1/4" (133 mm) blade, stainless steel fittings,
bark Cape Buffalo horn handles. Overall length 9" (228 mm).
"Loveless-style Wilderness",
5" (127 mm) blade stainless steel fitting. Desert Ironwood
handles. Overall length 10" (254 mm).
"Cottontail",
3 1/4" (82 mm) blade with clip bevel grind,
stainless steel fitting. Snakewood handles.
Overall length 7 1/4" (184 mm).

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

I like them ALL. They just have a CLEAN, fine, fit and finish look to them, and the picture shows them well.

Though I have seen a few knives from Steve Johnson over the years that did not float my boat, the three posted here are all top notch, and appealing to look at.

The color/lighting not to mention the subjects make this a memorable photo, Dr. D.

I like the Cottontail best, with the clip, primo snakewood, wide bolster with sensible guard, and oversize thong hole.

Don't recall ever seeing cape buffalo horn before. Looks like African blackwood with texture--love it.

Hey folks,

Just came across this thread and thought I'd add three of my very own... all awesome Hideouts: stag, mammoth & MOP, respectively.

Cheers,

Matt

All three of these are simply stunning! Hard to choose a favorite, but I'm really drawn to the ivory handled one.

Matt,

Thanks for showing your SRJ's! It is one of my favorite designs.
I personally love matching pairs or sets!!!

All the best,

I love the ivory one as well both for the texture of the bark mammoth ivory and also for the bolster, which looks so great. Also, the stag was from last year's Solvang show and is just incredible.

I have a few more groups I'll post, but here is one of my favorite...

Nice display of SRJ's, Matt. How did you get your hands
on such beautiful sets? Did you piece them together one by one?

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Typical SR Johnsons!! Woo-Hoo!!!

CLEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks everyone. I definitely put them together piece by piece. A lot of the Johnsons can be hard to come by, so I'm just glad I fell in with some folks who were turning their colletions when I happened to stumble by. I'll post a couple of additional pics later, but how's this to tide you over?

Beautiful knives!! The only one I don't much care for, and it is because of the handle scales, is the first one.
