The author is a buck collector, so no matter what he says, that's exactly what's going on.
 
however, it does have a reference chart, which, for me at least, made it much easier to ID early 110's
 
The author is Larry Oden, Vice-President of the Buck Collector's Club. It's a great article and well illustrated. Larry did tell me that there is at least one mis-print in it.
