i was going to put this in my other post, but i thought it was worthy of it's own....:)

the little dude and i went downtown santa cruz today , to take care of a few things.. we hit my favorite thift store while we were down there too... 50% off day...:D
i've scored lots of cool stuff there, as well as some nice gear..

today it yielded a:
- mtn. biking jersey
- neoprene wine sleeve
- sterno stove/grill.. i figured i could at least build a small fire in it..
- and a frog spear... i love these things.. i grew up spearing frogs and crawdads in the local creeks and rivers...

anyone else thrift store shoppers/treasure hunters... i've heard some great stories on the forums, of thrift store and antique scores...

Nice haul, so how much did that all come out too? I've been meaning to go to my local thrift store, but I haven't been there in ages, I can't remember they're still in business.

Good scores! I went to my local thrift store but all they seemed to have was old furniture and lots of clothes.

i also bought 2 t-shirts and 2 small action figures..(1 for each of my boys)..

all together it was $9.25 :D

Good stuff. There are a couple local thrift stores that I swing into once in a while. It usually takes a lot of looking, but I have found some inexpensive treasures too! I still need to get one of those frog spears, I keep meaning to pick one up.

What, no acid-washed jeans or "ironically retro" cords? :D
(What I expected when I read "thrift store".)

I am a thrift store junkie! There is a fine art to it. Goodwill, Salvation Army and other larger or for-profit operations don't have as good a deal as smaller ones. the best one around here is run by a local charity. Look for places that don't sort stuff very well and start digging for treasure!
My latest scores were a sweet Pendleton shirt for $3, ($100 new!)
and a Vic Camper for $1 (broken blade tip , but hey, a buck !!).
I passed on a $5 Pendleton jacket and then found out they are $300 new!!
My all time greatest score was some video editing equipment for $10 that I used for several years and then sold for $700!!
At least half the clothes I wear came from thrift stores.

Swweeettt score bro, I hit them all on a regular basis, I scored a pair of nike acg hiking boots for my boy for a buck, a us army wool blanket for 3 bucks, I also got a retro hiawatha singlespeed cruiser from the late 60s for 10 bucks that im in the process of restoring for my wife. Its pretty rough, but complete. I also hit up the garage sales and auctions alot too. I once scored a box of arrowheads that had about 30 arrowheads and a stone tomahawk head in it for 20.00 at an auction. The dude who lived their found them in his field ofter plowing. I gave them to my wifes grandpa cause hes majorly into
collecting that kind of stuff.
When I was in high school we used to cruise backroads and rummage abandoned farmhouses for treasures. Found a hamilton pocketwatch in one. The thing about missouri is there is old homesteads and abandoned farmhouses everywhere. Probably was illegal, but the houses were all alone and you could tell no one had been in them for decades.

I never find that type of gear around here. :(

i find a lot of cool stuff at the thrift stores and at the flea market, around here.. tons of gear...santa cruz is filled with college kids and lots of outdoor oriented folks...:D

i have scored lots of brand name clothes and fleece's, an MSR pot set, some cast iron cookware, CD'S, camelbaks, a few months back i scored a nice pendleten wool shirt... last year i found a freezer sized zip loc bag, filled with various mtn. bike parts, some brand new pedals, all for $3...:D

I check on them several times a year. Lately I Picked up a nib spyerench made in Colorado $25. A Coldsteel Bush Ranger new $20. And a WWII era Martindale Machete $4.

Nothing like that I've found here- Heck I've never even seen a frog spear in real life!

Although I've been meaning to post a $20 survival kit Dollar Store challenge here.

Hey, were are these thrift stores? I used to get all my clothes from thrift stores when I lived in Ohio, but I have yet to find a decent one here in the bay area.

Nice score btw.

- sterno stove/grill.. i figured i could at least build a small fire in it..

Hey mtnfolk mike,

Coincidentally, today, I saw an article in the current Backwoodsman using the Sterno stove as a wood stove. You might want to check it out.

Back in the 60's, I used to use a Sterno stove, exactly like the kind you bought, for backpacking. It sure was slow but it did the job.

Doc
