Thrifty Thursday... Cheap Traditional Knives

Not carrying these today but did a few weeks ago and snapped this pic at that time. Rough Rider copperhead that started as amber bone before I dyed it black and an Imperial that I snagged off the bay for cheap. The Imperial has very nice pulls and blade action plus the steel seems to hone nicely into a sharp edge.

Colonial Barlow... so thrifty they couldn't even afford pay anybody to put an edge on it. ;)
I may save this for my first Grandchild. It would make the perfect first knife to teach them with. They could carry it, practice opening and closing, even wedge a sandwich in half... but no way they could cut themselves with it.

I can’t say enough about this Marbles Sowbelly Stockman. Great F&F and W&T, and the best thing, $14.99!:D

They are great EDC's, mine is Ramshorn and came very sharp, has great F&F, and you are correct, for their price you cannot go wrong.. Have a good weekend and stay warm. It is 85 deg. here and i am just about to open the bar and have an icy cold beer, i will have one for you.:p:). Stay safe and out of the cold.;)

That’s some great looking ram’s horn! I’ve had good luck with most Marbles. I was so impressed with the stockman I picked up the Cattleman’s Jack and it is just as impressive. It’s a big knife but really nicely done. So, of course I had to try another one! :D That’s where the luck ran out. I thought the cattleman whittler looked good and at 3.5” it would be right in my wheelhouse. Came with extremely weak back spring and in the open position the main blade barely stayed open. They sent me another one, same thing. This one, I think has design flaws, or just manufacturing issues. It’s like the pivot holes are drilled wrong because the back spring is barely engaged when you move the blade, weird deal, and it was like that on both of the ones I got. So they’re eye candy now and sit on a shelf!:D
85 degrees and a cold beer sounds really good right now! Have a good one!

AE4712E5-22A6-4338-B7DE-9C00BDBD12E9.jpeg I have this lady I work with who had her father pass away. She knows I like knives and she gave me a few of his since she didn’t want to hassle selling them. One in particular I have kept rolling around my workbench. For a long time it just laid there in it’s pitiful semi rusted state. One day I was bored and cleaned it up. All of the brown coating the handle had flaked off leaving the fake bone jigged in white. It’s a larger toothpick pattern in ss and I sharpened it on my stones. Took quite the edge. Now I use it all the time out in the garage. I really have come to like the pattern. I bet they are cheap as all get out...I dunno. It’s an old imperial. Here is a pick of my dog food bag, garden soil bag, bark bag slicer...my cheap love affair. I like it so much I started eyeballing the gec 12 pattern. Maybe one day I will replace it with one.

Funny how things grow on is like that - even better when it’s unexpected.

The GEC #12 or any “large” toothpick pattern has always tempted me. They seem like an excellent slicer in such a slim design - and I bet the ergos are great.

Yes it is funny how that happens. I used to hate that pattern. Just looking at it made me wonder who could love it. After grabbing it a few month I know I’d really miss it. The ergonomics are perfect. I would think a two blade with a little pen might be perfect.

Another Thrifty Thursday, another Rough Rider from the summer of 2017.
This one is a medium stockman in jigged red bone, and it's pretty much my Platonic ideal for a stockman with the round bolsters, almost sunk joints, low-riding sheepsfoot, and slender clip. And still under $10 including tax and shipping!

So cheap it’s comical...

I think you're doing an amazing job on the handles of your knives with those vinyl "stickers" (if that's what you're still using)!:cool::cool::thumbsup::) But what brand are the knives? I'm kind of a sucker for knives with an anchor shield, but I really like that anchor bolster you have on today's examples!! ;):thumbsup:
