The sun had finally arrived here on the west coast , so pit Jr asked if I'd take him to catch a few crabs on the sea front.

Awesome!

As a general rule, I love marine mammals. They're very cool animals. Where I live, I can get out among whales and dolphins during the summer within two hours :)

Too fatty for my tastes, but you can get a lot of lard from them for other purposes.

Just heard today that this guy here in CA, got fined $20000, and community service for killing a sea lion, he was at first facing jail time, I thought I heard something of a federal law, here in the U.S., against killing marine mammals.

IMO we need to get our priorities straight, granted I probably wouldn't kill a seal, but if I fished for a living, I'm sure I wouldn't think twice about it, ...man around here those water clowns are like coyotes!

And as those pics show, that'll happen everyday, scaring all the fish away!

KILLAFORNIA,

Are you serious? What good can possibly come from killing marine mammals? If there aren't many fish, it's because fishery management is an extremely complex and difficult issue (more so on the East coast, than the West, though it's tricky everywhere). I wouldn't go around telling people that seals scare away fish.... If you spend a bit of time with these creatures, you will see how intelligent they are; how can you possibly advocate the killing of something that will come up to a beach and bat around a beach ball with people. They're not exactly out to get you.

Why did that fellow kill a sea lion? Without knowing the facts, I'd guess it wasn't to feed his starving family, and that he got exactly what he deserved.

Apologies if you were just joking :)

Where is that on the island? We caught some big ones (crabs) in Nanaimo. And tons in Whiterock which is about a half hours drive from where I stay. Never seen any live seals though. Just a dead one on the dyke:D.

No, I wasn't joking, but I guess if after you've seen hundreds of thousands of seals in your life you may become a little jaded. Are they smart?, sure, but so are racoons and rats. People kill them routinely . Are they not special because they don't live in the water? I have friends who do fish for a living, and to hear it from their lips you'd think they were the worst animals God ever created.

From what I heard today, which someone could probably google by now if they really wanted to, was that the guy was at the pier and killed the seal with a steak knife.

You'd have to be pretty dumb to think you can play pass the beach ball with a sea lion tho (In real life). Yeah Sea World shows how smart they are, but lab rats do amazing things too.

To me, He killed a sea lion, big deal.

It's not like he tried to reel it in by a crab lure and some rope:D That'd just be cruel!

From personal experience, however, sea lions do scare the fish away, if your'e fishing off a pier, dolphins too!

Southern tip of the Island at a place called sidney !;)

There's a small island next to mine that has a massive seal colony next to it. They pop up next to the ferry like black labs every time it pulls out.

I've had seal on the BBQ and it doesn't taste like chicken !! Had beluga too. Want to hunt seal ? Norway is trying to promote seal hunting.

sorry, don't mean to make this political BUT. Its my right to kill any animal if I am going to eat it.

governments should regulate hunting but No one has the right to ban it.

Allot of people nowadays think that meat comes from supermarkets, stakes in little plastic plates. The hypocrisy of it.

If you cant kill it, don't eat it.
