Curious what people prefer thumbdiscs, thumbholes,or thumbstuds and why? I'm kinda partial to thumb discs myself.I like the way they look, they seem to be more aesthetically pleasing IMO.

I like thumb holes and other cut out varients first, then thumstuds. I hate thumb disks.

Flippers :D
Holes - more versatile (spyderdrop/normal opening/easier to open in reversegrip)
Studs.

I can't rate discs since I've never tried them.

I like a quick, short rotation, and studs usually are the best for this. I'm really not that fond of the Spyderhole, although it works well enough, since it requires a loooong arc to open, even on the smaller models. I usually just flick them instead.

Of course, my favorite knives, balisongs, don't even fit in these catagories.

I prefer holes, but studs come close after.

This thread could be misconstrued very easily.

I'm a hole man, by far. Studs and disks don't even come close, for me.

I actually prefer a Carson flipper as a first choice for opening, then the hole, disk, and stud.

I'm pretty picky about this....
I like them all.....
1) The holes have to be the right size AND smooth. There's nothing worse than a hole that wasn't smoothed before it shipped. I also don't like the really big holes either
2) I'm picky about thumbstuds..... I have no other way of saying this.... It should be fairly smooth and not tiny. For me, texture studs are okay, as long as they aren't scratchy.
3) Disks..... I like the emersons... They're not bad, They make it EASY to open a knife, but they can sometimes make a knife look ugly if it's not properly executed. Bob Terzuola (also the inventor of using these on knives) is the master of good looking knives with discs.

1. oversized nail nicks like on the Mnandi, but only for medium/small non-lockback knives
2. Hole for all other knives.
3. Flipper
4. Disc
5. Stud

The understated elegance and utility of the ambidextrous nail nick on my Mnandi really hits a sweet spot for me, but is probably a real pain to manufacture. The Spydie hole works well and is probably faster to make. The hole changes the lines of the blade, though, and the overall design of the knife seemt to have to morph to accomodate the hole.

Flippers are cool, but are a bit more "tactical" feeling. Studs and discs ruin the clean lines of the knife for me and seem to be a less elegant approach than the nick or hole. Discs seem to be less intrusive on the lines so I prefer discs to studs.

The hole simply can't be beat in my opinon.
Nothing I've tried has worked as well and as consistantly as the Spyderco thumb-hole.

The hole is my favorite followed by the ambi thumb stud, the single stud and then the disc. Generally I like the disc but it is too hard to build into my own folders. I would if I could though.
