Thumbdisks ?

I did take my fine sharpmaker rod to the knurling on my thumbdisks, they were a bit aggressive. I didn't take much off, didn't even disturb the black coating really, just took some of the sharp knurls off (is knurls a word?).

I like the thumb disc over thumb studs, only other opener I like better than a thumb disc is a thumb hole and here's why...

With a thumb disc you have more opening options than with a thumb stud.mfor example you can open a thumb disc by placing your thumb underneath the thumb disc, on the side, or from the front of the thumb disc. These options aren't avialable as readily on a thumb stud as they are on a thumb disc. Additionally it is far easier to open a thumb disc by rubbing it against something else than it is a thumb stud. Now with a thumb hole you loose some of these options but you loose restrictions in how your thumb must be placed to comfortable deploy the blade, you also gain the ability to stick things in the thumb hole and apply pressure to them. This can be useful for tighting down objects, or prying them out and is one of the reasons I really like thumb holes.

Personally I like the thumb discs. To me (Being 60 and well fed) the disc does not bite into my skin (when carried IWB) like the thumbSTUD does. Then I like the Spidy Hole because there is nothing sticking out from the blade to stop the blade (OK, Potentially stop the blade) from cutting all the way to the handle. AND as OnionPoptarts, the disc, does allow for different "Angles" for opening. So in order MY preference is

1. Thumb disc
2. Thumb Hole
3. Thumb stud
4. Thumb disc/w Wave
5. Wave only

I LOVE the Wave feature and believe it is the best, most useful "Modification" to a Defensive blade. BUT for an edc, If you like the Wave, I PERSONALLY think it should be teamed with the Spidey Hole. We may not agree with the Sheeple mentality, but they are unfortunately in the majority.

Mind you I carry a Combat Karambit as an edc and think the wave is the ONLY opening device needed along with the spidy hole for a defensice blade. The Wave is eye blink fast and the hole allows for slower, more controlled sheeple friendly opening.

Slowly using the thumb device of preference to open the knife will help with sheeple indeed. What I have found best for sheeple friendly too is bright colored scales. I have recently changed out some of what I have to neon/zombie green and hunter orange. Upon doing so, the gals that I know are commenting and using my knives now. Random folks at my local cafe don't flinch when I use my knife or nor do customers at my work.

I think the CQC-10 is still the best thumbhole model from Emerson in regards to opening. Waves out of pocket really well too! Someday I'll have a CQC-10 again but I'm going to grind it into a Bowie blade.

There's a nice 2011 SF 10 in the exchange right now for a great price! So tempted, but I already have one and other Emersons are calling my name! :-P

Easier to sharpen and open.

Think the Emerson Thumbdisk is.

A Love, or Hate thing.

Something your Thumb need get use too.

The Hole Opener is a Spyderco thing.

I have a Spyderco Rescue Jr. The Thumb Hole took time to get use too.

I like my CQC-7, better than my Rescue Jr. It is a sturdier knife.

To be clear, I don't hate the thumbdisk. Although thumbstuds are easier for flicking open, I prefer thumbdisks since they can be removed if needed when reprofiling at shallow angles. I just prefer thumbholes or tang flippers because it's a cleaner blade design, not having anything sticking out, attached, or screwed into it.

Dang! Now I want an Oval!!

You should get one! A CQC-10 is on my list and so is the Super-Karambit. Thinking of getting the standard Karambit before those 2 and giving it a slight grind to make the tip like the Super-K. Bent over the tip on my Karambit fixed blade a while back a ground that tip down on my bench grinder.

Back when I had some SMF's, SNG and some Spydies, I use to pinch the thumbhole with my thumb/index finger and with a light wrist flick open the knife using the weight of the handle. Then straight to choked grip position. Found that to be more fun than playing with my butterfly trainer at one point. Wore out a SMF lockbar doing so though, lesson learned (lockbars wear out).

the thumbholes and thumbdisc are in the same boat for me. Not really a fan of thumbstuds since I have always found them to be sharp edges on most knives (fixable but shouldn't have to).

OH MAN! I LOVE that K-bit. It be nice! Both mine are the factory jobs, Combat and fixed.

After playing with the thumbdisk on the cqc8 for a few weeks, i found i liked it after all. So i ordered
One for the psark from eki and put it on tonight. It waves a little different now but i like it

There you go! You got the Emerson sickness now!!

I prefer the thumbhole, then thumbdisk. However, I only like Spydercos thumbhole so there is that. I love my EKI thumb disks. That and the wave make Emersons Emersons imo. Aside from the amazing ergonomics ;)
