Ti Framelock Folder Options (S30V / ~3" Blade)

Man, I was so ready to pull the trigger after hearing all the positive remarks on the Sage 2...then you had to throw the Leafstorm into the mix!! That is one awesome knife! Something about it just seems perfect..

The Alias II also seems very nice (more of a Sebenza style blade), but I just love the style/shape of the Spydercos..

So now how do I decide between the Leafstorm and the Sage 2?? I do like that the Sage 2 has a longer blade, and I wonder if it is more comfortable in the hand than the Leafstorm... but the Leafstorm just looks amazing!

This post was supposed to make this decision easier...:confused:

The Leafstorm has kind of a Wharnecliff style blade and it is a smallish knife, if either of those two things bother you then don't pull the trigger on it. I personally like those attributes on that particular knife and I have no experience with a Sage2.

The Sage 2 would be my first pick.
Both the Sage 2 and the Bradley are the best Spydercos I own in terms of F&F. The fact that they both come from the same Taiwanese manufacturer can hardly be a coincidence.
This topic has already been brought up time and again, once more Taiwan is not China.

BTW, I never pulled the trigger on a Leafstorm because it is way too small for me. The only small Spyderco that fits my hands is the Poliwog.

Because of where it's made or because of how it's made?

I think the sage 2 is way too expensive for a Taiwanese made knife! The titanium military is made in the USA and is less than $50 more and much bigger (more materials) !!!! How is this possible ? Now I know the mili is bigger than you want but I was just using it as an example of how spyderco is charging way too much for a knife that us practically made in China !!!

Alright, I'm back on the Sage 2 as it meets more of my original goals. There's just a couple of things that are holding me back as I think about pulling the trigger:
  • The wire clip - I've never had a folder this nice, and just don't have the confidence in the wire clip I see in the pics. Has anyone done a modification to replace the wire clip with a standard one?
  • The lock release tension - I saw a youtube review where someone said the tension is a little weak, and doesn't inspire confidence that it won't close on you.

Any thoughts on these two points from Sage 2 owners?

The wire clips may be Spyderco's best clip IMHO. Much stronger than it appears and easy on the pocket.

The lockbar is pretty strong and thick as far as I'm concerned. Because this is a medium sized knife the lockbar is not very long yet because it's thick it doesn't feel spongy or weak. I think it feels very safe, personally.

The wire clip is IMHO the best clip on any knife. I do feel the Sage2 can slide up when wearing thin material shorts (never an issue with jeans) but this is mostly due to the smooth Ti. scales, not the clip.
As for the lock bar, I'm not sure what the youtube reviewer is experiencing. Seems fine to me.

I owned a Sage II for awhile until a friend liked it more then me...it led to a good trade for a Benchmade 635, not a bad deal.

The wire clip on the Sage should be cloned everywhere, it's the best thing to come along in years...if a clip makes a knife this one does it. Easy on the pockets, and the silver coloring doesn't stand out even wearing black shorts.

Being a big fan of Ti knives the Sage II is an outstanding knife in every way and is one of the very best currently out on the market IMO.

Well - I pulled the trigger on a Sage 2 today! Only $141 shipped from Amazon.com. Thanks for all your insights and input that helped me make the decision. I can't wait to get this knife!

There is one thing I was wondering about that I forgot to ask previously - how is the blade retention when closed? Anyone have any issues with it opening on it's own? Not that it makes a difference since I already pulled the trigger, but I just wanted to get your experience on this in advance.

Thanks again!!

It has decent retention. I've never had a problem with my Sage1 under normal conditions but it has opened twice on me when dropping it on a hard floor.
The Sage2 feels identical. I'd say it's a non-issue even though they will come open easier than a lock back.

Thanks again for everyone's input. Your feedback guided me to an unbelievably awesome knife. The Sage 2 came in the mail tonight and I am extremely impressed. This thing is tight and feels awesome in the hand. The opening is super smooth, and the clip is much more robust and firm than it looks in the pics. Your recommendations were right on target!:thumbup::thumbup::D

I can't imagine being too much happier, with even a Sebenza...

Wow you just lost most of the respect members had for you. :thumbdn:

I can understand why someone wouldn't want a knife made in China or Taiwan to cost so much. After all, doesn't Cold Steel manufacture in Taiwan? And their knives aren't anywhere close to Spyderco's Taiwanese models in terms of quality. I don't think it's a horrible thing that a company outsources to Taiwan, but I don't like manufacturers giving the customer less for the money and not passing on their savings. That being said, after looking at the materials and experiencing the quality first hand of the Taiwanese Gayle Bradley, it seems clear that Spyderco has brought the best value possible to the consumer, and I'm keeping a close eye on when these come back into stock.

I suspect there are quite a few people who feel that way about the Sage2.

I just bought the sageII from a member here on bf and Im loving it so far.
It locks up solid and its takes alot of force to move the lock

I don't think you could go wrong with either. Grip might be a little better on the leafstorm due to the one g10 slab
