I hate ticks, except for the guy in the big blue costume who would yell out "Spoon".

Anyway, I just pulled a tick off of my neck, I pulled one off my back yesterday at work, and pulled one off the base of my skull the beginning of the week. I've been pulling ticks off the dogs, even though they have tick collars. Any old home remedies?

I don't know of any home remedies since they focus on your exhaled breath (stop breathing ain't much of an option:cool: )

It's not a home remedy but permethrin treated clothing helps a lot! As will some DEET.

Huge amounts of B12 vitamin showed some hope in the past. However, the dose is very high and you'll smell like you've died. Also, I'm not sure that it was really proven to work.

Make sure you're removing them correctly with tweezers close to the bit site. You don't want to use the match on them or any of the other "wife's tail" methods, just increases the amount they spit into your blood stream.

Probably this is completely full of BS, but my personal tactic is to eat lots of spicy food, especially things with garlic. Garlic is known to be at least a little effective fed to dogs for flea control. My baloney theory is that chemicals in plants have evolved over time to protect them against insects. 500 million years of plant chemical warfare has to have something going for it.

Or maybe bugs just don't like the way *I* taste. It is a good excuse to enjoy lots of spicy food anyway :)

Seriously, I have had good luck against chiggers by applying stick deodorant around my ankles.

I'll have to keep that stick deodorant idea in mind: One year chiggers drove me up the walls!

For ticks, I usually just stare them down. After awhile they get the idea and decide to move on. Of course, by then they're pretty swollen looking...just the fear I guess...

Take care.

The only thing I've found that works is Sawyer clothing repellant. You do have to follow the directions and let the spray dry on your clothes before putting them on. Pain in the neck sometimes. Ticks are lawyers of the bush.

Frontline on your dog. Kills the ticks pretty quickly.

When I turkey hunt, I DEET my clothing.

I agree, Frontline Plus on my dog. (Deet for me and my clothing.)

Regarding the dogs, my vet says that Permethrin based applications like BioSpot should be avoided due to their being "systemic" which can cause health issues for the dog.

I've been yanking them off of me. I pulled two off of me, one at work, and one when I got home, and was sick for a good portion of the night.

'fer God's sake, keep an eye on those tick bite areas! I speaking from experience..........

I was FINALLY diagnosed with Lyme disease after 9 months of living hell, and there is no guaranteed cure, but I have a good shot at it.

The bite area will have a bullseye shape around the bite itself.

Throw those ticks in a Ziplock freezer bag, date 'em, and throw 'em in the freezer. They will be nearly priceless if it would come down to a diagnosis, and seek out a Doctor that recognizes Lyme Disease as a real disease.

100% DEET Look for a warning label "Do not allow skin contact" or something like that, then bathe in it. Put some at the top of your socks, bottom of the jeans, top of pants, bottom of shirt, collar, end of sleeves, and just to be safe on the underwear.

I treated my cammo with a permethrin based spray before I went turkey hunting this spring. Even talked the wifey into doing a VERY thorough tick check on me when I got back.:D No ticks... even though I was crawling through some definate tick territory.

I got flu-like symptoms after my first hunt this year. Mentioned Lyme's and ticks to the nurse and doctor and they seemed willing to consider it. Both said something like, "That's good to know." Turned out to be a bad round of hay fever though.

Not sure I've ever seen 100% DEET. The OFF I use has something like 29 or 30%.

Went two weeks ago with a new hunter. I was calling for him, and he had set up just down a hill from me--apparently in a bed of ticks. Had 'em all over him. He could have used some permethrin.

Mongo, I've seen the permethrin and have heard it's effective, but was a little wary of using it. Do you have to re-treat after each washing? Typically, it gets pretty hot turkey hunting, and I prefer to wash out my camo after each hunt.

Some of the advice given here is scary.

Prevention is the key... bug repellent for your skin, and Permethrin for the clothing you'll be wearing in tick territory.

Do you have to re-treat after each washing?

One treatment lasts several washings

I apply ether with a compress. When the red blood pocket of the tick has turned to be black the tick is dead and won't spit his poison. Then and only then i remove the tick. I do it for me as well as for my dog and we are both in good shape.

I don't want to be too unagreeable, but if the tick is carrying Lyme, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and many other pathogens, if you get bit, you done.

There is a transfer when the tick has to soften up the skin to attatch.

If you have a tick, for God's sake, get it off you, ASAP.

Deep woods off on shoes and sock tops ,socks over pant legs . Deep woods off on pant legs . Don,t sit down in woods or grasslands . Sit on an elevated position . Spray your dogs lightly on legs and belly every couple of days with flea and tick spray . If they tend to lick their fur forego this as too much of that stuff is no good for man or beast .

You don't have been unagreeable at all, in fact i have to thank you a lot. After reading your post i' ve searched somes informations on the web and yes,you are right,i did the wrong thing since years. We had few ticks in my area until these three last years and i certainly have been lucky enough to don't meet the bad one! Who knows for how long the luck would have been on my side? Many people here use ether against the ticks, i will have to make know how wrong it is, a hard job to do!

Thanks again.

dantzk8, you are certainly right about getting the word out. It IS hard to do, but the more you tell, the more will listen.

Good luck to you and yours.....
