Hi everyone.

Problem:
I have a brand new GEC knife that has a little bladeplay side to side. It is a #23 Pioneer model in Bocote wood. Is this normal for GEC knives? Should I just keep using it, or try to remedy the situation?

History:
I purchased it not too long ago and have carried it on a couple hikes but I have not had the chance to use it yet, accept for cutting up some fruit.

It was not until the first week that I inspected it carefully for blade play, and each blade has some side to side play. It is quite noticeable. The opening action is great, the finish is great, everything about the knife is awesome -but it has blade play.

Thanks for the help.:)

My #25 is nearly a year old, and still solid as a tank. No play whatsoever. I'm not sure what GEC's warranty is like, but it might be worth looking into. Personally, I sandwich my knives with horizontal play between a folded up bandana and a folded knit hat on the cement of my patio. I then peen the bolster until the play becomes acceptable. I've done this on my Schrade 30OT, Case med. stockman, and a Buck Cadet with great results. It works, but definitely be careful doing it.

I would contact the maker, there should be no side to side play. Please let us know what happens. I would hope the dealer or the manufacturer takes care of you.

Thanks for the quick responses!

Their website has no warrantee info that I could find, so I sent them an email describing the problem.

I would still be interested to know what others think before I receive a response from GEC.

Thanks

not normal, not GEC standard quality, I'm sure they want to maintain their reputation for excellence.

i have bought 8 mdl 23s since sept. only one had a little blade play. this play was very minimal & did'nt bother myself. a tiny amount of movement is insignificant.and after subjecting a red spiral buffalo lock back to 2 very strenous cardbooad tests & cutting thru 2 whitetail briskets this user has never loosened up at all. this knife & a queen mt. man hopefully will taste more deer blood this weekend & maybe some hog work. in texas some areas allow 5 deer so do'nt think i'm a game hog .actually too many deer in this state. however in a knife with 2 blades from the same end of bolster with noticiable play is not desirable. you should have returned it before using since if it's carbon you've probably started a patina.i would'nt fault a dealer for not exchanging a used knife . if knife was mint & dealer would'nt exchange then i would inform members.

Although not typical for Great Eastern, it really depends on the amount of movement. Is it "discernible" or "sloppy"?

Please understand that every return costs the factory a significant amount of their profit.
If they are having enuff returns that it's a problem , they should fix the problem , increase quality or redesign.

The fact is that American / German knives are getting more expensive every day; without increases in quality.

When the price goes up , shouldn't the quality go up as well or be standard across their line.

In theory, that shouldn't work with a 30OT, due to the way the bolsters are constructed (attached independently of the pivots, hiding the pins beneath them, as opposed to the traditional method where the pin actually penetrates the bolster).

Let's move this over to "feedback" for further discussion of possible remedies...

I just got an email from Chris Tucker (of GEC sales division). He said it was not normal and gave me the address to send it in directly to him -he said he would fix the problem.

Thanks for the help everyone. I will let you all know how this ends up.

I should be sending it in on friday morning.

GEC & Christine Tucker took care of a fault in my No.73 Flat Bolster immediately, and, I'm European and live outside the USA. That's service in my book:thumbup:

In the email she sent me she addressed herself as Chris Tucker.

Never met a girl that went by Chris before. Glad to know the service is good. That is what I was expecting.

Thanks
