Thanks Mort! Enjoy your Holiday!

That right there is awesome. I can't wait. Thank you so much. I'll reply with a little review upon receipt and proper " coon fingerin' ". Take care all.

Well Folks, she arrived, as Mr. Mort put it, "after taking a trip like Earl". She ventured from the OP's home, way south to FL, then up to Baltimore, then out to west-central Maryland.
Mr. Mort and members, as promised, I'll start the first installment of a little review on this knife.

Let me start by saying that I'm so impressed with this #23/Beaver Tail Shaped/Large Spey of a creation that came out of Titusville via Mr. Mort. Thanks, this is a gorgeous knife, and I will use and take good care of it. I had to look very hard for areas for which to be critical, so below when I cite issues, they really aren't a big deal. I had to find something.........

Here she is in all her glory, as factory NIT and presented from Mr. Mort to lucky ole' me in this giveaway.

My initial impression is that the bone is amazing. I've seen many pictures of these "Beaver Pond" bone knives and they are even better in person. I had thought they were a mottled dull porous bone (which is cool in its own right), but these Beaver Ponds are more refined than that. The color has depth. The bone is not porous at all. It is extremely dense yet took dye like camel. In the same plane within the bone the colors are off-white to a dark grey/brown. Sort of like appaloosa, but the color spectrum is more gradual. This knife was produced in the first year to year and 1/2 of GEC's production, and it is not finished quite as perfect as what we've come to expect, but hey I think todays GEC's are between production and custom, at least they seem to have perfected production driven folders. The rivets are all slightly proud and the backspring and blade are slightly low at the halfstop and open position. I like the square end (flush) tang. The action is a strong 9. I've actually only had one traditional stiffer than this one. It provides a sense of confidence that this is one sturdy knife meant to be used, not abused, but used harder than most. I'm right handed and I use my right thumbnail to bring the blade to the half-stop and then pinch it open to the full-open position. It lets you know you've got something in hand as your thumb and forefinger are pulled to the open position.

It came as we expect from GEC. Sharp, but not laser sharp. BTW I consider laser sharp what Gary Graley can do to a knife. I freehand sharpen and can't get a knife laser sharp, but pretty darn good. I'll say I'm mediocre. It was very "catchy" when slicing through paper and could not shave, so I figured I'd run it on my soft Arkansas and then strop. Here is a pic:

After polishing it was still catching and it was having trouble shaving, and this is what I found........the blade grind was off a bit from the front to the back of the blade.

So, out came my Norton. I ran it on the medium and then fine india, then back to the Arkansas and finally a strop.

I worked it for quite a while. I could refine it more, but I'm going to use it immediately so I can provide more of a review and then I'll take it back to the stones again. Anyhow, here is where we stand right now:

It may seem like I'm being a bit critical, please don't take it that way. This knife is amazing, and I'm super happy to have been the winner. Everyone here knows how well these knives are built, I am just trying to be one of those ultra critical collectors, so that you can see what I'm seeing here. BTW, I'm not an ultra critical collector. I have to really look this over to find a flaw. The covers are beautiful and unique and I can't wait to see how a Large Spey fits into EDC.

Thanks Mort, and from time to time as I use this knife, I'll report back.

Take care all and Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a Fruitful New Year for all.
Josh
