Tigersharks

Argh, money is not flowing. Trying to sell some random electronics, but nobody that want to buy them, has the damn money. And where should I look on the site for info on a Gerber Mark II?

I have a couple Tigersharks. One I purchased thinking it did not have the partially serrated blade and the other is an older SK-5 (carbon steel) blade with a plain edge. I like them, but honestly I have never used one for anything. Fun, I know. I find a knife like the Seal Pup Elite (plain edge) to be a much more practical knife for the outdoors. I use it.

I have an original tigershark I bought at a gun show a few years back- from the old facility in santa monica, made in seki, of course. I've tortured the heck out of that knife and it keeps coming back for more. the leather sheath is showing some wear, but the knife seems indestructible! also, the older sogs weren't aus6, I think this one is 440c. I would love to hear from anyone with better knowledge than I have.

Mr Night,

if you have an old old old original Tigershark, from the SOG Santa Monica days, my best guess is that the steel is SK-5 carbon steel. And I'll guess too that there are no serrations on the blade, another indicator of SK-5.

I'm very fortunate to have an SK-5 Tigershark and I really like the SK-5 steel. It is very easy to sharpen, and believe me, I am hugely sharpening-challenged, yet I am able to put razory hair-popping sharp onto the edge. And the sharp-retention edge holding is very good.

What I also like about the Tigershark is the weight. I have whacked and hacked at 4" diameter tree branches and they were no match. Plus the weight of the Tigershark made me think it was an ax, there was no handshock at all while easily cutting these branches.

Cheers,

Carl

carl,
thank you for the superior info. It's true, my tigershark has no serrations, so you are probably correct on the steel. I would post pics, but my camera does't exist. lol

thanks again,
bryan

I have read that the old Tech I and Tech II bowies were 440C. I have both of them and have no way to tell what kind of steel they used. From my perspective, it is possible that the first Tigershark following the SK-5 version was indeed 440C steel.

I also have a tech1 and 2 tech 2s. with the brass guard and kraton rubber handle. really awesome knives imo. I've heard that these were 440c. it's probably why I thought the tigershark was, too. My tech 1 has a very nice factory convexed edge as well. I love the weight of these knives-chopping is effortless!

Hello all. Good to see this thread hasn't died (nor have I, for that matter, just been busy/lurkin). I ALMOST have the money for that Tigershark. But things just haven't been working in an income-conductive way lately, so it's been slow going for funding. Very soon, though, VERY soon.

I'm on the lookout for a Tigershark (at this point anything but the latest one), never been unable to justify one :D. I've already gotten a mint Midnight Tigershark so I'm trying to find one to be a user.

Why are you against the latest versions? I've not used any before, so I'm not sure how they compare.

I don't like the serrations, spine rasps, and I'm probably just a cranky guy who doesn't like change:D I love the feel and look of the older ones and I feel that their sheaths were better as well. That being said, the 2.0 is starting to grow on me and Mistwalker's review was damn good for that knife in my eyes. I can possibly see one in my future...

Makes sense, not wanting change (If it ain't broke, DON'T FIX IT!). But they DO have their uses. And if you have pics of that Midnight Tigershark, I'd like to see 'em. I saw a couple of smaller pics, and they looked great. Thanks.

No problem:D

WOW! That is a beautiful looking knife. Is it TiNi coated? I like the way that colouration looks much better than the current Elite colouration.

the only thing wrong with the old SK-5 Tigershark is that Mr. SOG did not make enough of 'em to properly go around !!!

Cheers,

Carl

Agreed. Now we have to sue each other to get one! :D

"Don't rob me, I've got a Tigershark in each hand." How's that sound for a marketing campaign? :p
