Tilliefied!

Joezilla, I love my Tilley TH4 Hemp Hat. It has a broad brim and you have to like the secret pocket (I'm working on a PSK for it). The thing I really like about my Tilley hat is that you can machine wash it. I've washed mine a half dozen times and have always rolled it (like a burrito) to store lashed to my pack and it still looks great. I also bought a LT1B Bucket Hat that folds down into its secret pocket and weighs less the 3 ounces.

Tilley hats are great, I’ve been using them for years.

My favorite in foul weather is the “Hemp Hat”.

Big Mike, I think I'd run if I saw you in the woods!!!

But I'm with you on the TH4!!!!

I bought my Tilley T3 hat in 1990 and it has become one of my best friends when I'm outdoors. I've washed it dozens and dozens of times and it keeps getting better every year. The only thing I don't like about my Tilley hat is that it really too hot to wear during hot humid northeast summers. I've been wanting to get a nylon Tilley hat with air vents but I'm afraid my T3 would get jealous!

Here's me in my Tilley T3 at Beavertail Light on Jamestown Island, RI...

I had a couple, great hats. Mine were gotten at Walmart or on the boardwalk. Not high quality, my dog was not happy at all that they shredded on the first chew :D. One off the boardwalk was great in rain, the other one from Walmart became a sopping mess, useless. I need to get another one.

Tilleys are great! Comfortable, lots of sun protection, long-lasting - what's not to like (except their price!)?

Yeah, the price is high, but its worth it. I originally was put off, but now I'm a total convert. You will only have to buy ONE.

How do you guys like your hemp hats. I can't wait to see one of those in person. I also want to buy a pair of their pants if they have a guarantee like the hats.

Great write up Joe!

Unfortunately i became BDU Booniefied early in life. later I became Akubrafied. Both happened before I knew what a Tilley was.

I do need to get one. Theres a little shop in West Virginia that sells Akubra hats. When I'm there in June I'll see if they have Tilleys.

Joe, in the review, it looks like you have the olive version of the LTM6 -- how did the dark color fare in the 'Glades? Would you rather have gone with the natural or khaki?

Great writeup Joe. I really like em, but I want to try on a few differant models before I buy one. There is a shop in columbia that is a Tilley dealer. I looked at em last time I was up thee, but I bought a new Timbuk2 bag, and my wife wouldve slaughtered me if I bought a Tilley too. I didnt even try any on. I am gonna head back up one of these days an look at em.

Great question Cpl! With the heat, it didn't take too much of the radiation or heat up, at least not to a point that I noticed it. Any effect was put off by the fact that it was so "airy" up top. I was out in some pretty bright sun both in the glades and on a deep sea fishing run, and I didn't notice anything at all.

Interesting thing though is that dark colors tend to attract deer flies (so does yellow for some reason). The darker moving objects get deer and horse flie's attention more. However, it doesn't help 'em much cause they can't penetrate the tilley, and rarely go under the brim.

Good food for thought though!

Joe in the article you had some pics of it on your head. They are super small. Can you repost some here a bit bigger?

Thanks brotha.

Have any of you guys with the dark hemp noticed anything?

I'll post 'em when I get home.

Thanks on the engagment!

ya know ya'll can click on the pictures and they get bigger.

I had one years ago. Can't remember what model, but it was canvas? and the lighter tan color. I did find that it got a little too warm when it was hot out, and I only really wear a hat for the sun protection, if its not too sunny or I'm not worried about getting burned I will usually just wear a bandanna, and if its on the colder side I wear a watch cap. Anyway the Tilley got stolen when I was on a church trip in Cuba years ago.

Somewhere near Santa Clara there's a Cuban walking around with a really nice hat on, and who had a nice financial windfall when he found 40 USD in the secret pocket. I hope someone steals it from him.

I've since switched over to BDU boonies, I've got one in OD and one in khaki. They're not nearly as hot as the tilley was, and with a substantially decreased price tag I don't mind if I lose or ruin one.
