Well, after being cut pretty good three times in the last year when putting my hand in pocket for my keys due to the blade being slightly opened, I am moving on from the PM2.

I have always carried tip up and have never had a problem with any other knife, it seems the detent has become weak for some reason. I wonder if this is something spyderco would look at or is it just best to move on?

Seriously considering a 562 in elmax, but will carry a domino until that decision is made.
I have a 566 in elmax that I de-assisted and I can get it seriously sharp, but its just a tad small for my hands, and the detent is weak when de-assisted. Ive never been able to get the s30v on the PM2 as sharp, but the size is just right.

I’ve had blades do that, was the spine tucked firmly against your pocket for holding it closed? Any reason why that kept happening to ya? That’s first story ivy heard of pm2 doing this. That’s sucks hope u weren’t cut bad.

Yeah, i usually check and make sure all is good before I put my hand in there, and its always tight against pocket. One of the three times it was real bad, and I had just sharpened it and it was a nice clean deep cut. Good thing about that is it healed real quick.

That’s why I always crank pivots down and stiffen the action, I’m one of those that don’t like free drops. Can pm2 be cranked down or does the bushing prevent it.

Right bdu pocket, blade facing the bulk of the pocket. I had just got a dude in to handcuffs and in the back of my patrol car. I have type this guy's arrest report so I take off my pig gloves and go to stuff them in my pocket. I push my gloves in my pocket and yank my hand out while maybe saying a few naughty words. The blade had partially opened and went a good 3/4 inch under my thumbnail. I looked at my hand which was now spurting blood and my suspect asks "Are you alright man?" Needless to say that, along with having to go to the ER on duty was pretty embarrassing. There's pictures of the aftermath on here and another popular forum about people's every day carry.

WOW, yeah I know that feeling, pull hand out and red everywhere.

You carry tip up with blade facing the bulk of the pocket or against the seam?

Edited for clarity.
This would be my question as well.
If you're carrying tip up with the spine facing in, try moving the pocket clip to the opposite side of the handle, so you carry with the spine facing out instead. If you carry with the closed spine facing out (up against the outside of the right pocket, facing your right hip), then it shouldn't be possible for the knife to open up in your pocket - and you'd be keeping your hand away from the blade too.

Spine facing outside seam of pocket, hip.

I sent a Yojimbo to Spyderco with a letter describing the weak detent and all they did was sharpen it and send it back. The Spyderco enthusiasts will call for my head for saying this, but Spyderco customer service leaves a lot to be desired. Their lifetime warranty means the lifetime of the product. So if the detent is worn, they might say that it has exceeded its lifetime.

I don't really accept the argument that a knife should be oriented a certain way in a pocket to keep it closed. My Yojimbo rested securely against my pocket seem, so it didn't cut me, but it sure did a number on my pants. How did we manage before knives had clips? Seems to me our knives stayed closed. A folding knife should remain folded, otherwise it is defective.

Wow, that sucks for sure. I would send it in. My PM2 has one of the snappiest detents in my collection and I couldn't imagine it coming open in my pocket.

Agreed!

I will give them a call this week and see what they say and if they instill confidence in their response. Im guessing though that it will be a re-sharpen and tighten pivot, which Ive already done, and they will call it done.

Got bit years ago by an Emerson Commander that slightly opened due to their piss poor detents. Never again will I own an Emerson.

I guess it can happen to any brand/maker.
