Timed for a Pro-Grip update - Need input

The clip has got to grip! OK? Hunters have belts, fannypacks, slings etc. All these straps can grab a clip and send the knife flying,I know i had two come out this way, found the Endura lost for good an early model Delica hunting deer.Deep ride strong clip.

Also remember as far as clips go, guys tend to wear thicker insulated clothes when hunting.I don't need to get to my knife fast as much as know it will be there. How much would a sheath add to cost? Most people are used to these for their hunting knives.

Most hunters (like most people)are not knife guys so I would keep it lock back, something they know and trust.

Look at the Buck 110.Looks like it did in the '60's and they still sell them to hunters by the boat load. The latest greatest appeals to us knife nuts. The other 99.9% of knife buyers get what they know and trust.A large plain edge lock back in a sheath.

One other thing.IMO it needs to be tip up carry so that a lanyard can be attached. It is hard to use a tip down with a lanyard.

I like the idea of the 3.5-3.75" blade. I'd also like to see G-10 handles and a liner lock, much like the dicontinued Wenger models. I always wanted to have the G-10 handles/liner lock with a large Pro-Grip blade. I like the Pro-Grip blade style better for EDC use.

I like the idea of a 3.5" model in this style. As much as I like compression locks and their benefits, stick with the lockback. Like others have said, it's simple, works just fine and everyone is familiar with it.

Please offer this with a full plain edge option. The section of serrations is nice when skinning, but we're dealing with outdoorsmen who don't really like changing tradition a whole lot. Getting them to use a Spyderco is already a big step in my opinion. Also, it seems that an awful lot of forumites prefer full plain edge, as you can sharpen it for your needs.

I like the idea of VG-10, large hole and a full flat grind. On this blade profile, you can't do much better. As for the clip, the old one was innovative, but a regular 3-screw works just fine by me.

The handle debate has confused me a bit. I like G-10 as much as the next guy for many reasons. It's lightweight, ususally has some grip to it, but a big appeal to me is that G-10 nearly always means screw construction. So we can take it apart and play with everything when we want. On this, stainless with inserts would work just fine. When I'm skinning something and my hands are all bloody, I like one of two things for a handle. One is like the Moran, a highly figured but lightweight handle. It also works on the Moran because both sides are Kraton and it doesn't slip. The other thought is something good and heavy that won't be prone to move just because of it's weight. Inserts could be either Kraton or G-10, either would work for me. G-10 might have the advantage in chemical resistance, but the difference is almost a moot point. And for everyone who cries about the weight, look at the Police. I don't see you whining over that one and I doubt this would weigh more.

So to sum it up, I think a lockback, plain edge, 3-screw clip with stainless handles would be a fine ticket all around.

What I'd like to see would be:

Deep integral choil at pivot like the Dodo and the Native

Boye dent on lockback

4-position clip for lefty/righty tip-up/tip-down carry

For the lockback to be contructed in a way so that it wouldn't be total folly to disassemble/reassemble the knife.

For the handle, it'd be cool to use aluminum with g-10 inserts similar to Benchmade's 710-02 and 705-02, but the aluninum could be anodized to any variety of colors. G-10 is more durable that Kraton and feels great.

Seems as though what everyone wants, well in a nut shell is a lockback wegner with full flat grind-True?

Sounds good. G-10 is a must. I also like the idea of a bigger blade.

I have a SS Pro Grip, which had a lot of potential to be an excellent knife, but fell short in a few areas:

1) Too heavy. I like the stainless steel handle, but would have liked it better with some cut - outs to lessen weight. Better yet would be an aluminum handle, and even better - better yet would be titanium. Please keep this in mind for the new model.

2) That damned clip! Man, I hate that thing. I took mine off and substituted it with a clip from a Harpy, which worked great. Please don't use that grippy rubber clip thingy on the new model.

3) Screws. The phillips head screws holding the clip stripped out almost immediately. Please use torx screws.

So ... I'd love a Pro Grip with the above changes. A larger version, using said changes, would be great.

Edited to add that a Boye dent would be icing on the cake!

I know what you mean about that clip.I ordered a SS endura clip from SFO,it got here today and I couldn't change them fast enough. It may be good if you didn't have to take it out and use it alot.

A little larger. Tip down as at least an option. Not a liner or roll lock, preferable lockback w/ dent. Plain blade, no serrations. G-10 wouldn't be bad either.

A 3.5" blade would be nice.Maybe it could be made with the ball lock but the ball must have something better to grip it.Maybe small slots or something else so the lock would be easy to pull back.I think an improvement in the ball lock could give us the lock option that the other companies have taken. Also please leave the rubber grips. Its one of the features that make the Pro Grip unique.:)

I'll agree with the others who want:

G-10 slabs with steel liners, or aluminum with G-10 inserts.
A lock-back with the Boye Dent.
3.25" or 3.50" VG-10 blade.
Regular non-grippy clip.
Lanyad hole.
Large thumb-hole (at least as large as the Police model's).
Don't make the thumb-hole peak too sharp like the one on the Vesuvius and the Meerkat--a rounded hump is much more comfortable to put pressure on.

thanks,
Allen.

Sal, I have been waiting for this. I hunt small and big game, fishing too, backpack, camp, hike, and long distance rides on dual sport bikes (all off road). And to pay for all that I work between and office and construction sites. I have come full circle on my EDC, back to a FRN Delica. I have Cold Steel, Al Mar, and many others in my safe. That being said, here is my two cents.

Pro-Grip: possible names, Outback, W-EDC (Wilderness EDC), or just Wilderness, or how about " Sal ", who wouldn't want that as a partner on any adventure! Other folks are better at names than I am, however, if you make it I will use the heck out of it, every day.

3.5" VG-10 plain edge blade, flat grind
lockback with Boye dent
thick FRN handle
removeable ambidextrous pocket clip
lanyard hole (bigger hole)
thumb rest with serrations for better control
Colors: Orange & black (I'd buy both)

Sal, think hunting, cold wet slimy hands, and usually tired too. G-10 would be great with Titanium liners, but it sure adds to the cost. I have an old SOG Magnadot with a very thick synthetic handle, its strong and fills the hand nicely. Personally I don't like screws, in the outdoors I don't need to worry about my knife loosing parts.
Make it and we will buy it.

Thanks for asking and good luck,

Tom

Sal,

Excellent plan! But PLEASE leave of the clip. I have a pro-grip and didn't like it much until I changed to a standard clip and now it is one of my elite group of favorites.

Chris

FRN was an interesting, against-the-grain suggestion. After handling the Native III, I think thick FRN handles, properly designed, would be a real asset to this knife. Then again, you're looking at a market with largely traditional buyers where the Buck 110 is a perennial favorite, so solidity and heft might be more important than light weight.

I'm all for a G-10 or FRN handle. If it is made in FRN, I think a choice of handle colors would be a good idea. Black for the EDC user, blaze orange for the hunter. I notice everyone wants VG-10 steel, what about S30V? Spyderco seems to have had success incorporating it into some of the lower end models and still keep the cost down. Lose the kraton inserts. I've seen some examples of the Pro Grip that were a few years old and the kraton inserts had fallen out.

So my suggestions kind of mirror everyone else's:
3.5-3.75" blade of VG-10 or S30V, plain edge
FRN handle, black or orange (Keep the pro-grip shape)
Ambi clip (I've found a lanyard can be run through the holes going through the middle of the clip bolt)
Lockback
Thumb serrations on the back of the blade, and toward the tip, like the Jester, as well as traction notches along the back of the handle.
As far as names...Pronghorn(Might have to ask Ed Fowler about that one), Ibex, Cougar, Bushbuck, Eland, Sable, Bongo, Kudu, Gazelle.
